ディオールはLVMH(ルイ・ヴィトン モエ ヘネシー)グループのフランスのブランドです。

Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist. Today I'd like to talk about the surprisingly impressive world of Dior. The reason I decided to cover Dior is that I previously uploaded a video about stem cell cosmetics, where I explained that these products don't actually contain stem cells themselves, but rather ingredients that stimulate stem cells. One such ingredient is stem cell conditioned media — the extract remaining after stem cells are cultured — which contains compounds that stimulate stem cell activity. However, producing this requires large research facilities, partnerships with medical institutions, and cell culture infrastructure, making it quite difficult to achieve. Separately, some cosmetic brands research plant extracts that can stimulate stem cells, and Dior is one of them. When I mentioned this in a previous video, I received many comments and questions during my weekly live streams asking, "Dior does that kind of research? Tell us more!" I realized that while people recognize Dior as a luxury brand, most don't associate it with serious scientific research. That's why I decided to take a deeper look — so please watch until the end. First, let's talk about stem cells. Stem cells are the origin cells from which all other cells are derived. They can differentiate and multiply into millions of different cells. However, they are extremely rare — in skin, for example, they make up only 0.2% of all skin cells. This rarity is part of what makes researching them so challenging and resource-intensive. Dior is a French brand under the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) Group, which also owns Louis Vuitton and Moët Hennessy. With its tremendous financial resources, LVMH operates its own research and development center called LVMH Research, located in the suburbs of Paris. Approximately 300 researchers work there daily on various aspects of skin science. As I mentioned in a previous video, Asian skin and Western skin differ in texture, hydration levels, and other characteristics. Recognizing this, Dior has established research bases not only in Europe but also in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Seoul. Findings from these Asian research hubs are fed back to the Paris center, enabling the development of products tailored to different populations. Dior also collaborates with universities such as the University of Paris and various external researchers, truly placing it at the cutting edge of skin science. This world-class research organization made a remarkable discovery. You may be familiar with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), the groundbreaking technology developed by Professor Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. iPSC technology involves taking differentiated cells — such as skin or brain cells — and reprogramming them back into a pluripotent stem cell state capable of becoming any cell type. Dior's research team applied this iPSC technology to skin cells, reprogramming them back into stem cells. They then compared the reprogrammed stem cells from women in their 20s versus women in their 40s. The number of stem cells was not significantly different between the two groups. However, the energy — or cellular activity — of the stem cells in the 40s group was approximately 50% lower than in the 20s group. Since stem cells are responsible for generating new cells and repairing tissue, a decline in their energy leads to slower cellular renewal and reduced repair capacity — which translates directly into visible signs of aging such as dark spots and wrinkles. Dior's research team scientifically demonstrated this connection. Since Dior is not a medical institution and cannot use stem cell conditioned media in its products, it focused on its strength: plant extract research. The goal was to find natural extracts capable of boosting stem cell energy. Dior maintains its own gardens and farms, known as Dior Gardens, across seven locations including the French countryside, Switzerland, and Madagascar. These gardens are home to hundreds of rare plant species not commonly found in the wild. Plants from these gardens are sent to the research center for detailed analysis of their effects on skin cells. Through this research, four plant extracts were identified as capable of boosting skin stem cell energy: Rosanago from Madagascar, Peony, White Lily, and Star Jasmine. These extracts are formulated into proprietary ingredients used exclusively in Dior products. The culmination of this stem cell research is embodied in the Capture Totale Cell ENGY Super Serum and the broader Capture Totale series, which includes toner, serum, and cream. These products represent over 20 to 30 years of accumulated stem cell research. The series also incorporates an advanced form of hyaluronic acid known as acetyl hyaluronic acid — a molecule with four acetyl groups attached. This modified hyaluronic acid has been shown to penetrate several times deeper into the skin than conventional hyaluronic acid. While Dior might evoke a sense of being highly chemical or synthetic, more than 90% of the ingredients in this series are of natural origin. Dior strikes a compelling balance between maximizing the efficacy of plant-based ingredients and incorporating cutting-edge technology — a combination I find genuinely impressive. Perhaps most exciting of all is the announcement that Dior's research institute has entered into a collaborative research agreement with Kyoto University. The two organizations will share research data and co-develop further insights into skin stem cells. While the current Capture Totale series already reflects decades of Dior's own stem cell research, a new generation of products incorporating the findings from this Kyoto University collaboration is likely on the horizon. Dior is far more than a fashion house. It is an organization with the infrastructure, resources, and scientific partnerships of a true research institution. In preparing this video, I was genuinely impressed by the depth of its commitment to skin science. I hope this video has given you a new appreciation for what Dior is doing behind the scenes. On this channel, I provide in-depth brand analyses and easy-to-understand explanations of beauty and health topics. Please subscribe if you haven't already, and feel free to leave a comment suggesting which brand you'd like me to explore next. See you in the next video — goodbye!
