Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist.
As shown in the thumbnail, today I'll talk about things you should never do in midsummer, or you'll suddenly look older. Please watch until the end.
You've probably heard in magazines and on social media that summer is a season when skin aging accelerates rapidly. Many of you might think, "Of course, it's because of UV exposure, right?" And you're absolutely right—July and August have the highest UV levels, and UV exposure causes photoaging, which accelerates skin aging. However, sudden aging in summer isn't just caused by sunburn; several factors overlap.
Today, I'll share three things besides sun protection that you should be careful about.
**1. Lack of Sleep**
Summer is said to be the season when sleep duration is shortest throughout the year. Long daylight hours make it easy to stay up late, there are more events, and the heat can make sleep difficult, causing frequent waking.
Lack of sleep first causes skin dryness. Furthermore, according to research by SK-II, sleep deprivation causes the skin to turn yellow. Bilirubin, a yellow pigment found in red blood cells, is also produced in the skin, and shorter sleep duration increases this bilirubin production, causing the skin to look dull and yellowish. This can lead to inflammation and accelerated aging.
Also, research by Korea's Amorepacific found that continued sleep deprivation weakens the skin's barrier function. A weakened barrier function causes not only dryness but also minor inflammation, leading to skin aging.
Summer naturally creates conditions for sleep deprivation, but since your skin is already receiving UV damage, please make sure to get adequate sleep.
**2. Dryness**
Many of you might think, "My skin produces plenty of sebum in summer, so it's not dry." This is actually a major misconception.
In summer, sebum and sweat make the skin surface feel moisturized, but UV-induced inflammation weakens the barrier function, and air conditioning causes dryness, leading to a state called "inner dryness"—where the skin surface feels oily but the inside is actually dehydrated.
Additionally, in summer, people tend to simplify their skincare routine, preferring lighter, refreshing textures and neglecting moisture care. The combination of UV exposure, air conditioning, and simplified skincare means that summer skin is often drier than you'd expect.
Since you can't avoid UV rays and air conditioning, it's important to properly moisturize through skincare. Since sebum is already abundant, rather than layering oily lotions or creams, focus on ingredients that draw water into the skin, such as ceramides, heparin, Rice Power No. 11, and ectoine.
An easy method is to use toner-type sheet masks or Korean cosmetic pads in the morning to thoroughly hydrate the stratum corneum and prevent inner dryness.
**3. Nutritional Deficiency**
In summer, the heat often reduces appetite, leading to single-item meals heavy in carbohydrates, like cold noodles (somen), cold jelly, or ice cream.
Carbohydrates aren't inherently bad, but an excessive carb-heavy diet promotes glycation in the skin. Combined with sebum production and UV exposure causing oxidation, this creates a double blow of glycation and oxidation, leading to dullness and accelerated skin aging.
Avoid single-item meals and actively incorporate antioxidant-rich summer vegetables, as well as spicy dishes like curry that promote blood circulation.
Also, make sure to get enough protein. Fish oil, in particular, helps suppress bodily inflammation. Try to balance your intake of meat and fish, and if that's difficult, supplementing with protein powder is also a good option.
Furthermore, sweating in summer depletes minerals from your body. Since eating heavily salted foods isn't ideal either, consider taking supplements or consuming natural mineral-rich foods like Manuka honey daily.
As I mentioned earlier, how you spend your summer shows up on your skin like a "report card" in autumn. If you don't take care of yourself well during summer, you'll see the results in the form of spots, wrinkles, and sagging.
In addition to sun protection, please make sure to:
- Get enough sleep
- Prevent dryness
- Maintain proper nutrition
Please prioritize these three points as much as sun protection.
How was today's video? It might have been a bit alarming, but I hope watching this will help you become more mindful.
