Good evening, Doctor. Should laser-based cosmetic treatments be avoided in summer when sunlight is strong? I'm considering hair removal and sagging treatments in summer, and laser spot removal in winter—do I not need to worry about that so much? This really depends on your lifestyle. The reason people say winter is better for laser spot removal is that after laser treatment, you're generally told to thoroughly protect against UV rays. After a spot is removed, the skin doesn't immediately return to a normal skin tone—there's pigmentation that gradually fades until the skin returns to normal. If you get sunburned while that pigmentation is still present, it can darken again like the original spot, or the pigmentation can linger longer. So basically, during that period afterward, you need to do thorough UV care. So the thinking is that winter, when sunlight is at least a bit weaker, would be better. But nowadays there are UV-blocking masks, people apply sunscreen thoroughly, and there are various lifestyles like staying home more—so it's less about "you must not do spot removal in summer" like in the past, and more about how much UV exposure you personally get.
Do you have any recommendations or brands you use for night bras? I've tried various ones, but none felt quite right and I've just wasted money. Sorry this isn't a dermatology-related question. I'd really appreciate any information you can share, since you always look so beautiful. Thank you. Well, it depends on what purpose you want to wear a night bra for. One important point: wearing a night bra will absolutely not make your breasts bigger or anything like that. No matter what product you use, wearing a night bra won't cause growth. So why wear one at all? It's things like preventing sagging or reducing discomfort while sleeping. Please understand it in that sense. When I look at ads now, claims like "my breasts got this much bigger after wearing a night bra" should be considered 100% suspicious. The purpose is to keep your breasts in their proper position while you sleep. So if you want to prevent shape distortion, it's good, but since gravity pulls things out of place while lying down, the point of a night bra is just to keep things in their proper position. So it's fine if that's your purpose, but if your goal is to make them bigger, there's no need to use one. By the way, I only own one brand of night bra—I received one from Wacoal and tried it. I tend to sleep in a smooth, silky pajama, so wearing a night bra felt much better than wearing a tank top underneath. There are also cup-attached options nowadays, but I found the night bra smoother and more comfortable, being wire-free, so I still carefully use the one I received. I use Wacoal products, and Wacoal really measures breast shape and size according to age group—since I had just finished breastfeeding, I took that into consideration and tried it.
Doctor, thank you for your always fun and educational videos. I have dry skin but an oily T-zone, and the sides and bottom of my nose get really bad with oil and clogged pores. I've been doing enzyme cleansing without rubbing, as you recommend, and moisturizing, but it hasn't really improved. Is there a good method? If you're doing gentle enzyme cleansing and still have excess sebum, to control sebum the most, a balancing toner would help, and also vitamin C—pure vitamin C products should be incorporated properly. Pure vitamin C works faster, so adding something like the SP Treatment LC Serum or vitamin C would be good.
Good evening. I sense not just outer but also inner beauty from you, Doctor. Do you have any secrets to mental health? Thank you for that. Well, I think it's about not overthinking things. Wondering "why, why" too much doesn't solve anything, so basically not worrying about it. Also, I've been told I have extreme insensitivity just today, so maybe that's part of it too.
Main topic: I've been taking a low-dose birth control pill since my late 20s for acne prevention. Does this make me more prone to spots? Actually, I've also been taking the pill continuously since my late 20s, so if it's a cause of spots, the possibility of melasma isn't zero. Melasma can appear due to hormonal balance effects. It's said that taking the pill can make it more likely to appear, but for me, it greatly improved my acne, allowed me to control birth control myself, and most importantly, I was taking it to treat endometriosis, so it's about what you choose to prioritize. But if any spot were to form, it would be melasma.
I'm reposting because I didn't know how to send a message properly. I live in the US. I took my daughter to a dermatologist for acne treatment, and without any explanation of the treatment, she was prescribed 0.25% tretinoin. I've heard it can be quite irritating—is it okay to use? I wonder how old your daughter is. Tretinoin 0.25%—well, in the US, this is commonly prescribed. Tretinoin itself lowers sebum production and has an exfoliating effect, so it is used for acne treatment. However, prescribing it without any explanation is a bit concerning. I'd recommend asking the doctor who prescribed it how to use it and how much to apply. Tretinoin is indeed sometimes used for acne treatment.
What should I do for skincare when experiencing a retinoid reaction (A-response)? My skin gets rough and sometimes itchy. When experiencing an A-response, it's best not to irritate the skin too much. For example, during an A-response, instead of regular retinol, you'd use phyto-retinol. There's a Phyto-Retinol Concentrate product from bareMinerals that contains plant-based retinol like this. Originally, bareMinerals products are designed to be usable calmly even by sensitive skin types, like those with atopic dermatitis, so there's also an AGL Phyto-Retinol 10 serum and cream. I think using those would be good. For pure moisturizing, something like Karte HD would work too. If you want to fully bring out the A-response while also supporting the skin further, the AGL bareMinerals Phyto-Retinol Concentrate serum or cream would be great.
Doctor, everyone, good evening. About five days ago, a mosquito that got into my room bit me four times on the neck and twice on my toes while I was sleeping. The itching on my toes just won't go away—why does getting bitten on the fingers/toes itch so much? Do you have any recommended medicine besides insect bite treatments? Sorry for the odd question, and please remember to drink water. Ah, getting bitten in small areas like that—for example on the hands too—can be really itchy, right? When a mosquito bites, it causes a slight allergic reaction at that spot, and if you scratch it, it spreads and the itching increases even more, so try not to scratch it. Over-the-counter medicine can be difficult to fully address this, so if it becomes swollen or the itching is really severe, it would be good to get medicine from a clinic.
