Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today, I previously uploaded a video on my channel titled "5 Ways to Avoid Fatigue," which received a huge response and got a lot of views. In that video, I talked about things like eating until you're 80% full, not letting your body get cold, and making sure to get enough protein and vitamins. Today, as an updated version, I want to dive deeper into the fundamental ways to make your body even less prone to fatigue. The key points are three things: sleep, nutrition, and rest. If you're always tired and feel like you can't shake off fatigue no matter how much you sleep, please watch until the end. Now, don't you often feel like even though you're sleeping properly, you just can't get rid of the tiredness? I feel that way myself too. People often say to me, "Dr. Tomori, you're so energetic, how do you avoid getting tired?" But actually, I do get quite tired sometimes too. Actually, this might be caused by the autonomic nervous system imbalance that's unique to modern people. We receive so much stress on a daily basis, and we get an enormous amount of information from our smartphones, right? That becomes a stressor, causing us to feel intense stress. Also, smartphones and tablets emit fairly strong light that constantly enters our eyes. Because of this, we're always in a state of receiving stress. So what happens then? The sympathetic nervous system becomes dominant. The sympathetic nervous system itself is like a "battle mode" - a "let's do our best" kind of nerve state, so it releases the stress hormone cortisol. What happens to the body? Since it's constantly in battle mode, thinking "alright, battle mode," it becomes more of a tense mode rather than a relaxed one. Even if you try to rest mentally, it just doesn't work out that way. To switch into relaxation mode, you need to shift not to the sympathetic nervous system but to the parasympathetic nervous system - the relaxation mode. For example, even on your day off, you might try to rest by lounging on the sofa, but if you keep scrolling through your phone, it might feel like you're resting, but your brain remains in sympathetic-dominant mode, staying tense and not actually resting at all. The biggest key to creating a fatigue-resistant body is how well you can suppress the sympathetic nervous system, suppress that battle mode, and make the parasympathetic nervous system - the relaxation mode - dominant instead. However, making the parasympathetic nervous system dominant is quite difficult for modern people in reality. You need to consciously and deliberately approach making the parasympathetic nervous system dominant, or lowering the sympathetic nervous system. Truly resting equals making the parasympathetic nervous system dominant, so today I'll thoroughly explain the important things you need to do to achieve that. First, let's approach this from the nutrition angle. In my previous video, I talked about eating until 80% full. There's a field of study called "rest science" (kyuyogaku), and from that perspective too, this is considered one very important factor for proper rest. Also, please be careful about something: when you're tired, you might want to eat something sweet to raise your blood sugar, right? While it's true that raising blood sugar can make you feel more energetic, the real problem is when blood sugar levels spike up and down repeatedly - that's the worst thing. If you keep eating sweets whenever you feel hungry or tired, it leads to blood sugar fluctuations. This actually makes your body more prone to fatigue. From the perspective of rest science, this is just masking fatigue rather than truly resting, so it's better to avoid these blood sugar fluctuations. So what's actually important? There are nutrients necessary for the body to recover. The one that probably comes to everyone's mind immediately is protein. It's the building block of muscles and boosts metabolism, so I think everyone understands the importance of protein. But of course, it's not just protein - other nutrients have been getting attention recently too. Those are magnesium and theanine. First, magnesium is said to relax the sympathetic nervous system. That's why it's sometimes called the "calming mineral." However, it's said that about 70% of modern Japanese people are deficient in magnesium. Given that we're already dealing with smartphones and constant stress that keep the sympathetic nervous system dominant, if we're also deficient in magnesium - the mineral that calms us down - it becomes even harder to calm the sympathetic nervous system, which is the current situation. Now, how does magnesium affect the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems? There are three ways. First, there's a receptor called GABA, and when this GABA receptor is activated, the sympathetic nervous system actually calms down a bit. Second, there's a hormone called melatonin that supports sleep, and magnesium is necessary to produce this melatonin. So if melatonin production decreases, you might not be able to sleep well, or you might wake up in the middle of the night. So magnesium is a very important mineral for properly inducing the sleep hormone. Third, magnesium suppresses the stress hormone cortisol. While it doesn't directly act on the sympathetic nervous system, when the sympathetic nervous system becomes dominant, the stress hormone cortisol is released, so magnesium works to suppress that stress hormone itself. So, magnesium has the function of helping us, who are constantly stressed, relax a bit. For your regular diet, I'd like you to eat things like almonds and spinach - basically eating nuts and such. But if you're not sure what foods contain magnesium, supplements are fine too. However, there are supplements that work on the digestive system and those that work on the nervous system - the ones for the digestive system can act like a laxative, so if possible, I'd recommend using magnesium glycinate. Also, since magnesium can be absorbed through the skin, there are now massage oils and massage balms containing magnesium, so incorporating those is another good option. The second nutrient is theanine, which is a component found in green tea. Theanine is said to be related to alpha waves, which are produced when a person is relaxed. So when your body is tired but your mind is too alert to sleep, drinking theanine can support alpha wave production, giving an image of your brain gradually shutting down. The latest data also shows that people who properly consume theanine have shorter times to fall asleep - meaning shorter sleep onset time - so I think it's a good idea to take it properly. That's why before bed, suppressing the sympathetic nervous system slightly and turning on the parasympathetic nervous system switch is really important. Next, I want to talk about important things from the perspective of sleep and the recently discussed field of rest science. For example, when you're about to sleep, don't you sometimes just sleep in your regular clothes? Of course, pajamas themselves are easy to move in and comfortable to sleep in, but in terms of switching between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, wearing relaxing clothes serves as a switch telling your body "it's time to sleep now," so wearing something that promotes sleep is also an important point. Among these, there's a product with really interesting data. Actually, the most important thing about sleep isn't the length, but not waking up in the middle of the night. Of course, not waking up midway does allow you to sleep longer, but waking up during sleep means your sleep has become shallow. So minimizing this mid-sleep awakening is the key point for determining whether you're truly getting proper rest. Actually, it's been found that if you fall asleep while the sympathetic nervous system is still dominant, as I mentioned earlier, this mid-sleep awakening increases. This brings us to that fascinating fiber I mentioned earlier. In the latest fatigue recovery research in rest science, a fiber called PHT, which incorporates nano-platinum and other materials, is getting a lot of attention. Our bodies emit far-infrared rays ourselves. This fiber radiates that back, and through this radiant heat, blood flow is promoted, which is generally understood to reduce fatigue in ordinary fibers. But this PHT fiber I mentioned, which incorporates special platinum and other materials, has minerals that emit extremely weak electromagnetic waves that directly stimulate skin sensors. This then affects the autonomic nervous system, actually lowering the sympathetic nervous system a bit. Isn't that amazing? Simply applying this to your skin, or wearing it, activates this sensor - I think that's truly wonderful. The company researching this fiber is called Venex, and I myself wear Venex products quite often. When I'm filming, I'm exposed to a lot of light to make my skin look beautiful, which can excite the brain and cause stress. So in that sense, I try to choose things like this to counter that. As I've said many times, we modern people should assume we're always in a sympathetic-dominant state. Relieving fatigue means slightly suppressing the sympathetic nervous system while relatively increasing the relaxing parasympathetic nervous system - that's what true relaxation and rest means. So the nutrition I mentioned earlier is very important, and externally, wearing comfortable clothing and managing your own "off" time in your own way is also very important. So, how was that? Today, I thoroughly explained about sleep and nutrition for building a fatigue-resistant body, but more importantly, how to truly rest - what happens inside the body that constitutes real rest - from the perspective of suppressing the sympathetic nervous system and making the parasympathetic nervous system dominant. When you're busy every day, it's easy to keep putting off rest, but please try switching between your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems in your own way, so you don't accumulate fatigue. In the video description, I'll include a link to the research page for that amazing PHT fiber I mentioned earlier, so if you're interested, please check it out. Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
