Hello everyone! I'm Arata Tomori. Summer has arrived—are you feeling tired? For those of you who think it's more exhausting than usual because of the heat, there's actually a surprising cause. Of course, we get tired in winter too, but many of you might feel that summer fatigue accumulates more easily. You might think it's due to the heat, but recent research has revealed that ultraviolet rays are actually involved. When we talk about UV rays, many of you watching my channel already know they're related to skin aging—wrinkles and age spots. However, recent studies have shown that ultraviolet rays also contribute to feelings of fatigue. This comes from an experiment conducted in Okinawa, which makes me personally interested. The experiment works like this: participants exercised outdoors for 60 minutes total. They would run at full strength, walk slowly, take breaks—repeating this 15-minute cycle four times. One group applied sunscreen during the 60-minute exercise, while the other group exercised without sunscreen. Researchers measured fatigue substances in their bodies immediately after exercise, 6 hours later, and 24 hours later. The results showed that fatigue substances peaked immediately after exercise, then gradually decreased. However, the group that applied sunscreen showed that fatigue substances didn't rise as much, and they reported less fatigue. The specific fatigue substance being measured is lactic acid, which is released into the bloodstream during intense exercise as an energy source. Higher lactic acid levels indicate greater fatigue. Interestingly, the group wearing sunscreen had suppressed blood lactic acid levels. Another fascinating finding was that not only lactic acid levels, but also subjective fatigue reports were lower in the sunscreen group compared to the non-sunscreen group. This suggests that exposure to ultraviolet rays causes some factor in the body to trigger fatigue. When you think about it, it makes sense. Even just watching my children play at the park while staying outside, I feel unusually tired. That's because I'm exposed to UV rays, which makes me feel fatigued. Of course, we've been recommending sunscreen primarily to prevent photoaging of the skin. However, modern people are exhausted for many reasons. In summer, the temperature difference—cold indoors with air conditioning, hot outside—disrupts the autonomic nervous system, causing fatigue. Additionally, UV exposure promotes inflammatory substances in the body, so summer is truly a season where we're prone to fatigue. Accumulated fatigue creates a negative cycle, leading to chronic fatigue where people can't recover. We should definitely take countermeasures. Specifically, of course, apply sunscreen. Additionally, use physical sun protection—wear a cap or use an umbrella. This might seem like something only women do, but men get tired too, so I'd love to see more "sun-umbrella men" increase. Men often hesitate to apply sunscreen, but nowadays there are many products that don't turn white and aren't sticky, so I recommend starting with sunscreen application. Also, as mentioned earlier, temperature differences disrupt the autonomic nervous system, so keep socks and cardigans handy to avoid sudden body cooling from air conditioning. Taking a warm bath and allowing your body temperature to drop helps you fall asleep more easily, so getting proper rest is important. First, make sure to apply sunscreen, use physical sun protection, and adjust your lifestyle habits to avoid accumulating summer fatigue. Many of you might have previously dismissed my sunscreen recommendations, saying things like "That's not for me" or "I don't mind wrinkles or age spots." But fatigue is unpleasant, isn't it? Learning that sunscreen application protects not just your skin but your entire body is really interesting. I hope today you understand that summer fatigue is caused by ultraviolet rays. Thank you for watching today. We've started a membership program for just 90 yen per month. Every Wednesday, we broadcast exclusive YouTube Live for members where we discuss the latest beauty trends. If you can't make it on Wednesdays, we also keep archived videos available, so we'd be happy if you join. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
