Research began when it was discovered that sake brewers (toji) had beautiful hands, and in 1988 it was approved as an active whitening ingredient. As for how it suppresses melanin production - melanin, which causes spots, is produced by melanocytes deep in the skin. When the enzyme tyrosinase is activated, melanin is produced. Tyrosinase's activity is triggered by binding with copper ions. So if you can remove the copper ions, even if tyrosinase is present, it cannot produce melanin. This means it suppresses the process of melanin production, which is the root cause of spots. But that's not all - recently it's also been found to suppress glycation, which cleans up not just the black and brown from melanin, but also the yellow dullness from glycation. So for those seeking more transparency and are concerned not just about preventing spots but also yellow dullness, this is a great ingredient. So when these proteins decrease in the dermis, signals are constantly sent telling cells to keep producing melanin. To address this too, they added Green Rooibos extract, which suppresses the signal to produce melanin.
