Budget skincare (petit prix) products have been evolving rapidly. While high-end department store cosmetics (depacos) certainly have their own exceptional formulations, budget products are increasingly offering impressive ingredients at surprisingly affordable prices. Today, I'll introduce one serum each for brightening, moisturizing, and wrinkle improvement. [#1: Moisturizing] Kikumasamune Skin Care Essence (Sake Beauty Serum) This is a truly outstanding moisturizing serum for its price. Its biggest feature is the inclusion of three types of human-identical ceramide, one of the most important moisturizing ingredients available. Ceramide is a naturally occurring component in our skin. It makes up the intercellular lipids that hold the cells of the stratum corneum (the outermost skin layer) together. When ceramide levels decrease, gaps form between cells, making skin more vulnerable to external irritants and causing moisture to evaporate more easily. There are three types of ceramide in skincare: pseudo-ceramide, plant-derived ceramide, and human-identical ceramide. Human-identical ceramide most closely resembles the ceramide naturally found in our bodies and offers superior moisturizing performance. The serum also contains amino acids, which help form intercellular lipids and strengthen the skin barrier. Sake is naturally rich in amino acids — that's the basis of its reputation as a beauty drink — and this serum captures those benefits in skincare form. Additionally, two types of fast-acting, water-soluble vitamin C derivatives (ascorbyl glucoside and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate) are included, helping to boost skin radiance while moisturizing. The texture is a firm gel with a faint, koji-like scent. It blends smoothly into the skin and provides enough moisture that those with oily or combination-dehydrated (inner-dry) skin may not need anything additional after toner. [#2: Brightening] Transparent Shiro Hada Medicated Double White Essence This is a quasi-drug (medicated) product, meaning its active ingredients — arbutin and a vitamin C derivative (ascorbyl glucoside) — are present at regulated, effective concentrations. When skin is exposed to UV rays or inflammation, melanocytes use an enzyme called tyrosinase to produce melanin. Arbutin inhibits (blocks) tyrosinase activity, while the vitamin C derivative works at a different stage through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This two-stage blocking approach is likely the reason behind the product's name, "Double White." It also contains dipotassium glycyrrhizate for additional anti-inflammatory support. The serum has a watery, lightweight texture with no stickiness, though it may feel slightly heavier over time. It also contains trehalose for added moisture. It works well as a spot treatment on areas prone to dark spots, such as the upper cheekbones. [#3: Wrinkle Improvement] For-A F Medicated Wrinkle Clear Essence This is a quasi-drug product manufactured by Naris Cosmetics and sold as a Matsumoto Kiyoshi exclusive. The active ingredient for wrinkle improvement is niacinamide, which helps maintain epidermal thickness and firmness to visibly reduce wrinkles. Niacinamide is also known for its brightening benefits, making it a truly multitasking ingredient. For the brightening active ingredient, it contains an oil-soluble vitamin C derivative (ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate), which works gradually and steadily over time. The formula is further enriched with arbutin, placenta extract, coenzyme Q10, nano-hyaluronic acid, and Lipidure — ingredients you'd rarely expect to find in a budget product. One drawback worth noting is the roller-ball applicator, which requires you to roll it across your skin to dispense the product. If you're concerned about friction, simply dispense the product onto your hand first and then apply it. The formulation itself is exceptional, and a tube format would be a welcome improvement. That said, the ingredients alone make it worth recommending.
