Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today is November 22nd, which is "Good Couple Day" in Japan (a play on words since 11/22 can be read as "ii fuufu," meaning "good couple"). Actually, being a "good couple" can help extend your healthy life expectancy, so in honor of Good Couple Day, I'd like to explain this scientifically. Please watch until the end. Healthy life expectancy and human relationships are very closely connected. This isn't just about married couples—please think of it as applying to your partner in general as you listen. First, there's data verifying the effect of couples holding hands. A study was conducted on 80 people, 40 couples, comparing those holding hands with their spouse versus those alone. It turns out that people holding hands show a lower pupillary reflex. What this means is that when people are tense, their eyes tend to become more alert/dilated, but holding hands allows them to relax instead. By relaxing, people become less likely to interpret aggressive comments from someone other than their spouse or partner negatively. Indeed, I don't hold hands with my husband much, but when I hold hands with my children, I do feel relaxed and my feelings soften—even if someone says something unpleasant, I tend to feel more forgiving rather than aggressive. So holding hands with someone seems to have a real effect on mental stability and stress reduction. Another really interesting study comes from a Canadian university. This research found that kissing before leaving for work extends lifespan. I'm honestly not sure why they decided to study this, but apparently, couples who kiss before going to work have a lower probability of getting into traffic accidents and taking sick days off work. Not only that, but their income also increases by 25%. Isn't that fascinating? The reason for this seems to be that kissing triggers the release of endorphins and oxytocin in the brain—so-called "happiness hormones." When people feel happy and content, they're less likely to rush or become distracted, which apparently lowers their chances of accidents. It also suppresses the release of the stress hormone cortisol, which boosts motivation and a sense of well-being, helping work go more smoothly—and this research suggests that this could be linked to higher income. The oxytocin released during kissing is also said to suppress appetite. If you think back to when you were dating, you probably didn't eat a huge amount of food together, right? When you're with someone you love, oxytocin is released, and there's some truth to the idea that being in love means you think more about your partner than about food. This appetite suppression is thought to help prevent obesity and lifestyle-related diseases. Even without a spouse—think of scenes in dramas where a man drinks a lot after work, and then a beautifully dressed proprietress at a bar greets him warmly, saying "You worked hard today, enjoy your drinks." Even without anything romantic involved, simply having someone say "you worked hard" or "great job today" after work has been shown to have a health-promoting effect. The reason is that when drinking alone, it's better to drink with someone rather than by yourself, as this helps prevent overdrinking—that's one point. But another key point is that being praised makes people feel motivated. For example, in rehabilitation, patients who are praised—"You made great progress today," "Your arm swing looks wonderful," "You walked for so many minutes today"—end up walking farther than those who just do rehab without any encouragement. So people become motivated when praised. Of course, it's important for a wife to say "you worked hard today, well done," but even hearing kind words like "you're so sweet" from a bar hostess after work can soften one's feelings, and this can lead to being kinder to one's partner once back home. So, surprisingly, going out for a casual drink might actually contribute to better health. Another point is that couples who enjoy drinking together are actually shown to have good relationships. This isn't exactly about health, but when asked how many times a week they drink with their partner, couples over 50 who have such drinking opportunities together tend to have longer-lasting relationships and more harmonious households. However, the key here is drinking together—not just the wife or husband drinking alone, but enjoying it together. Of course, if you drink at home, you shouldn't drink too much, but it's been shown that this can help build relationships, promote health, and create household harmony. In these scientific ways, having a partner is truly indispensable for us. Humans rarely thrive living in complete isolation, so even though there have been times when meeting people or gathering together wasn't easy, spending time with someone you love or enjoying physical closeness with your partner can reduce stress, boost motivation for work, and contribute to health. The closest partner for most people is their spouse, so on this Good Couple Day, I hope you can enjoy a harmonious home life. How was that? I know today's theme felt a bit forced, but I do think it's worth reflecting on around Good Couple Day. The reason I decided to make this video is that a cosmetics company asked me to give a comment about Good Couple Day. As I was thinking about various comments on what makes a good couple, I said, "A good couple is one that can enjoy conversation together," and that "conversation is what keeps relationships healthy." When I said that, someone pointed out, "As expected of a doctor, you think about things scientifically, even when it comes to relationships between couples," and I thought, that's true. While being romantic is important, I think some people might feel more motivated to get along with their partner when told that staying close scientifically leads to a longer life and even higher income. So I thought this perspective might be worth sharing, and that's why I made this video today. Thank you so much for watching until the end today. I'll see you in the next video. Goodbye!
