Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today I want to talk about the "dark side" of what's commonly known as "Best Cosme" (Best Cosmetics awards).
The first half of 2023 has ended, and various publishers are now announcing their Best Cosmetics picks. As one of the judges for these awards for about 10 years, I want to be completely transparent today about what Best Cosme really is, and honestly share how I personally approach the judging process. I hope you'll watch until the end.
Do you all like Best Cosme? When this season comes around, I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I think "Oh no, I have to choose again this year, this is tough," but on the other hand, I get really excited too.
Let me explain how Best Cosmetics selection works. As judges, we go through almost every product released during the period (for example, the first half of 2023), from major brands to small and medium-sized companies. From all of these, we choose what we think is "good" — but this sense of "good" is highly personal.
Of course, whether something suits my skin or not matters, but my criteria for selecting Best Cosmetics is based on whether I feel the research and development, or the company's efforts behind the product, are truly outstanding. In other words, I don't select something just because "my skin improved" or "it felt nice to use."
There's often talk that "Best Cosme doesn't mean anything" or "big companies pay to get selected," but honestly, after more than 10 years of doing this, I've never once been offered money or gifts in exchange for including a product in Best Cosme.
Also, Best Cosme isn't decided by me alone, nor just by magazine staff. If you look at the magazines, you'll see quite a large number of people involved — skincare experts, hair and makeup artists — everyone votes, ranking products like "this skincare item is #1, #2, #3" in detail, and these are then tallied to determine the final rankings.
Even if one manufacturer tried to influence just me, it wouldn't have much impact. Conversely, while I can't say with 100% certainty since I'm not on the publisher's side, I think it would be difficult for cosmetic companies to pressure magazine publishers.
That's because people in the beauty industry are closely connected. Over meals, during photo shoots, we often ask each other "What did you pick for Best Cosme this year?" And usually, the products that most people chose end up ranking highly in the actual publication too. If a product that nobody voted for suddenly became #1, that would be suspicious, right? So there's a sense of "that makes sense" among industry insiders every year. I can't say it's absolutely zero, but manipulating things behind the scenes seems difficult.
Another criticism I hear is that "the ingredients in Best Cosme-winning products aren't impressive" or "nothing special is in there." Let me explain how cosmetic development actually works.
I think there are broadly two types of cosmetic development.
One is OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) development, where a company partners with a cosmetics manufacturer to formulate products using existing ingredients. Anyone can use OEM services — if I wanted to start a brand tomorrow, I could. However, some OEM companies have their own proprietary ingredients, and many Japanese OEM companies have truly excellent technology and research capabilities.
The other type involves companies with their own research facilities that develop entirely new ingredients. For example, if a company wants to create a whitening ingredient, they first research the skin science behind how melanin is produced, discover approaches not previously known, research various plant extracts, and eventually develop a new ingredient to incorporate into their products.
Developing new ingredients is no simple task — it might be a once-in-a-lifetime achievement for a researcher. And after investing years of hard work into developing something, if the details were made public, competitors could easily copy it. That's why companies often keep such formulations as "secret sauce," not disclosing detailed information.
To someone who only looks at ingredient lists, this "secret sauce" might seem worthless, but in reality, these are often developed based on solid dermatological research and science.
Neither of these two development approaches is inherently better than the other. However, developing new ingredients based on dermatological research requires a proper research facility and many researchers — something only major corporations can typically afford. This is why Best Cosme winners tend to be dominated by large companies with strong R&D capabilities. Whether you see this as a "dark side" or simply "unavoidable" is up to you.
Of course, some Best Cosme winners aren't chosen for new ingredients but for improvements in penetration technology or formulation using existing ingredients. So again, it's not a matter of one being better than the other.
The affordable ingredients found in budget-friendly products ('puchipura') also often trace back to ingredients that were developed by researchers years ago, which have since trickled down to more affordable products. I want people using budget-friendly cosmetics to remember that they're benefiting from the efforts of those researchers.
This is a bit of a tangent from Best Cosme, but I often hear people say things like "Department store cosmetics ('depacosu') are pointless" or "Why is this expensive when it doesn't even contain recognized active ingredients like niacinamide, vitamin C, or tranexamic acid — isn't it basically just water that doesn't do anything?" I think many researchers quietly feel hurt by comments like these.
I don't want people to misunderstand — the "active ingredients" listed on ingredient labels aren't the only things that affect the skin. Developing new ingredients requires solid dermatological backing, and each manufacturer conducts real research to bring these into their products.
However, such research findings are often only presented at events like the International Dermatology Congress, held once every five years, where global brands from around the world present their research. Japanese manufacturers participate too, as well as at events like the Japanese Dermatological Association and the Japanese Society of Aesthetic Dermatology.
Unfortunately, under Japanese law, companies can present findings like "we discovered this new ingredient through our research," but they're prohibited from explicitly stating "we've incorporated this ingredient into this specific product." So even if they want to say it, they legally can't. I consider this the real "dark side."
Everyone wants to know, but companies can't legally disclose it. That's why only ingredients already recognized as "active ingredients" — like niacinamide, vitamin C, and tranexamic acid — tend to be viewed favorably, even though many products actually contain cutting-edge new ingredients backed by the latest research.
By the way, even the ingredients currently recognized as "active ingredients" were once new ingredients developed by some manufacturer and later officially approved. So being a new ingredient doesn't mean it's dangerous or has side effects. Japan's cosmetic regulations are extremely strict, and safety standards apply equally to both new and traditional ingredients.
In fact, if we discover a previously unknown mechanism behind melanin production, and find a way to suppress that specific mechanism, it could potentially be even more effective than existing approaches. Just because something is based on a new discovery doesn't mean it's risky — these are cosmetics, not drugs, so please rest assured on that point.
Personally, I want to shine more light on the people doing this research and development. Not just as a doctor, but as a woman who is also aging, I want cosmetics to continue evolving. That's why I cast my Best Cosme vote with gratitude toward those developing new ingredients.
My reason for buying department store cosmetics is similar to making an advance investment in researchers' dreams. It's really like "supporting your favorite" (oshi ni kakin) in fan culture. If researchers don't continue developing new ingredients, then when I turn 50 or 60, cosmetics will remain exactly as they are now. While what exists today is wonderful, I want researchers to discover even better things — that's why I buy department store cosmetics and vote for Best Cosme with appreciation for these researchers.
Of course, some OEM companies also develop their own proprietary ingredients, and their formulation skills are impressive too. It's worth paying attention to whether someone creating their own cosmetics line is using the OEM approach or the in-house research approach — both deserve respect.
Rather than debating which cosmetics are "good" or "bad," I hope you'll think about what criteria matter to you when choosing cosmetics. Honestly, I don't select Best Cosme winners simply based on "products that worked well for me." I vote for companies based on their research and development, and the evidence behind their products. Whether you consider this a "dark side" or not is up to you.
Going forward, I hope to feature more cosmetic researchers and R&D professionals on this YouTube channel — perhaps even reporting from conferences. If that sounds interesting to you, please subscribe to my channel.
So, what did you think? I used the word "dark side" in the title today, which might have surprised some of you. People say all kinds of things about cosmetics, and some say, "Dr. Tomori works with so many cosmetic companies, so..." Perhaps it would actually be more profitable for me to develop and sell my own products. When I see people successfully creating and selling their own brands, I sometimes think maybe I should do that too.
But honestly, I'm someone who wants to support the people developing new ingredients. Maybe someday I'll team up with researchers to create something myself, but I have no such plans right now. For now, I plan to keep "investing" in the researchers developing new ingredients, like a fan supporting their favorite.
If you enjoyed today's video, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
