Transcript (English)
Hello everyone! I'm Tomori. Today I have a special collaboration with someone I've really wanted to meet — RIKACO! I reached out to her because I wanted to learn the secrets behind her amazing style and figure.
"Thank you so much for having me. I've been watching your channel for a while too, and I have so many things I want to ask you. I'm also so glad you'll be appearing on my YouTube channel after this — a true mutual collaboration!"
On RIKACO's channel, I'll be sharing my usual topics like skin whitening and wrinkle care, but today I want to hear RIKACO's secrets for maintaining her figure.
"Your face, you can do a lot with lasers and skincare products. But you can't change the length of your legs (laughs)."
That's just DNA — something you're born with. But how do you maintain your body shape? Have you ever gained weight?
"When I was pregnant, I gained quite a lot. I have two boys, and both were 3,500g at birth. My usual weight was around 49kg, but I gained about 15kg with each pregnancy. That was the first time I ever really gained weight. I'm naturally not the type to put on weight easily — even at my heaviest outside of pregnancy, I was maybe 53kg."
What do you focus on most when it comes to health now?
"More than worrying about weight, what I care about most now is taking in good things — good food, good ingredients. It's the best thing for both your body and mind. The turning point was pregnancy. My OB told me to eat a balanced diet, and I started really thinking about what that meant. Up until then, I was smoking heavily and drinking a lot, but I quit smoking when I got pregnant and cut back on alcohol. Then I realized that even a 'balanced diet' is meaningless if it's full of junk food, and that's when I started seriously looking into organic eating."
"When it comes to food, I also made it a point to educate my two sons about where food comes from. I didn't want to be a household where mom just cooks and the kids eat without thinking. So I taught them hands-on — how to fillet a fish, how to handle meat, what it feels like to scale a fish. I absolutely hate the idea of a man who can't do anything for himself and expects women to do everything. Whether you're a boy or a girl, I wanted my kids to be fully capable of taking care of themselves."
Honestly, your image from the outside was always this glamorous, high-profile person. Before I started watching your YouTube channel, I assumed you had housekeepers doing everything — cooking, cleaning. It never occurred to me that you'd be doing it all yourself and going organic on top of that.
"During the bubble era, I was really out there — partying every night, sometimes going straight to work still drunk. But because of that, I wanted my home life to be the opposite. I hated the idea of being someone who parties hard AND has a messy, chaotic home. I worked hard, I played hard, I barely slept — but I still kept my home in perfect order. I always wanted to be ready if someone dropped by unannounced."
When did you even sleep?
"Honestly, not much. I just made it a rule to never let things pile up. The house was always clean, always ready for guests, and I could always cook if needed."
You're really strict with yourself. Personally, I tend to think, 'Maybe the little elves will clean it while I sleep' (laughs).
"That's fine too (laughs)! I just can't leave things undone — that's my personality."
When did you make your debut?
"I debuted at 13, so I've been in this industry for over 40 years now. I never actually wanted to be a model or enter the entertainment world — I'd been scouted since elementary school, but my parents kept saying no. When I got to middle school, I finally started, and honestly, my motivation was pretty simple: 'What kind of part-time job can a middle schooler even do? Modeling, I guess.' It just happened to take off from there."
"Back then there were no smartphones or social media, so the only way to connect with stylish, influential people in the industry was to go out at night. Around 18, I started taking my career more seriously, and I realized the people who were at the top — the most fashionable, the most creative — were all out at clubs and bars. So I went, I networked, I made connections. Famous photographers, overseas designers — I'd meet them in those spaces, get noticed, and get invited to fashion shows. In today's terms, those nights out were my version of YouTube and social media — a way to be seen and understood."
Let's talk about motherhood. You raised two boys, and I'm currently raising three kids, so I'd love your advice.
"You're working AND raising three kids? How do you manage?"
I lean on a lot of people — my husband, my parents, friends. I absolutely could not do it alone.
"I pretty much did it alone. I got pregnant shortly after getting married, and once I decided to have the baby, I knew I couldn't do both work and parenting at the same time. So I made a decision: until both kids were adults, parenting would come first. I never used a babysitter — not once. I scheduled my work around school hours, made sure I was home when they got back, had breakfast ready in the morning, and dropped them off myself. I kept that schedule for decades."
You always seemed so active in the industry — I never would have guessed you put your career on the back burner like that.
"It got especially tough when I became a single mother. But honestly, the love I had for those kids overwhelmed any sense of hardship. Having children was the first time I found something more important to me than myself. I wanted to make sure they never felt lonely or abandoned — especially after the divorce, because they didn't choose that. So I put their lives before my own, completely."
"But looking back, I'm so glad I didn't chase work desperately. I always believed 'work doesn't run away.' And when my younger son turned 20, it was like a weight lifted from my shoulders. I cried alone in my bed — happy tears, overwhelmed by everything we'd been through together. I felt like I had truly completed something. And I thought: now my own free time begins."
Any regrets about how you raised them?
"None whatsoever. They might have their own complaints (laughs), but in my heart, I did everything I could. I got them both to adulthood — mission accomplished."
What's your relationship with them like now?
"We're close. My older son is actually working with me now — he's the director of my YouTube channel. He was the one who encouraged me to start it, and said he'd be right there to support me. It was the first time I really handed something over to him, and I've learned so much from him in the process. We work together as equals now, not just as mother and son — and that feels really special."
"With my younger son, we share a lot of interests — surfing, golf, organic food and health. Just yesterday we were both excited about a new kumazasa tea delivery (laughs). He's the only person I know who loves pomegranates as much as I do. Meanwhile, my older son is really into art and kanji — he knows so many characters I can't read, and I end up asking him to explain them to me. He acts all exasperated, like a stern father (laughs)."
I hope I get to have that kind of relationship with my kids someday.
"You will. I think the key is to be someone your kids enjoy spending time with, not just someone they feel obligated to check on. And giving them real experiences from an early age helps — my boys spent summers at school in Hawaii, learned table manners at proper restaurants, understood dress codes from a young age. Those things stuck with them and made them capable, confident adults."
Today really changed my image of you. I always thought of you as bold and glamorous, but hearing you talk, I can see how meticulous and thoughtful you are underneath that. That combination is probably why so many people want to work with you.
"I know it might sound funny coming from me, but I really am a homebody at heart (laughs). Taking care of my home — that's something I'm genuinely good at and love."
Thank you so much for today, RIKACO! Don't forget to check out RIKACO's channel, where I talk about skin care — whitening, wrinkles, age spots — and please subscribe to both of our channels. Thank you again!
