Hello everyone! This is Asada Arata. We receive consultations from viewers, and since we also want to learn more about teeth and whitening, we've invited Dr. Teruyama again today. Doctor, could you please tell us about whitening? Yes, of course. For me, whitening usually means using toothpaste that removes stains or getting whitening treatment at a dental clinic. But when I look online, I often see before-and-after ads where really yellow teeth become super white, or reviews saying 'my teeth became pure white after using this.' What's the truth behind this? Right, dot dot dot... Yeah, that can't really be true, can it? That's right, I think there are some misunderstandings. Misunderstandings? What do you mean? Well, first of all, the ingredients differ by country, right? Just like cosmetics. Yes, that's true, that's true. As a fundamental premise, the whitening ingredients in toothpaste sold in Japan are different from those overseas. So there's nothing that makes teeth pure white? Exactly. For example, say your teeth have a certain natural color. There's no ingredient that bleaches beyond that natural color. So it can restore your teeth to their natural color, but it can't make them whiter than that? Yes, that's how it's regulated. So regarding stains, which you mentioned earlier - technically that's called discoloration. Things like dullness accumulate daily, and the effect of removing that is what we consider 'whitening' in Japan. That's the Japanese standard. So by using it, if you have natural teeth, the role of whitening toothpaste is to reset them to their original color. I think that makes sense, because when you look at children's teeth, they're beautiful, right? They're not doing any special whitening, but the color is still beautiful. Our teeth are naturally that color. But eating things with color like curry, tea, or coffee causes them to dull over time. If you remove that, you can get teeth like children's. However, year by year, though there are individual differences, it's said teeth tend to yellow more easily. Just like skin. Right, there's some natural aging involved. That's natural, and when it comes to what's commonly called 'whitening,' it's really about how you handle your natural aging process. If you're satisfied with the natural color, that's where you can stop. It looks youthful and healthy. But if you want to incorporate whitening because it gives an impression of cleanliness, then it's good to utilize professional dental whitening treatments. Hearing this, some people might think that if Japanese products are weaker, maybe they should import products from overseas instead. What's your take on that? Many patients think that way too. Sometimes they receive them as souvenirs too. There's been an increase in stylish overseas toothpaste brands lately, right? Yes, I really understand wanting to try them, but dental quality actually varies subtly by ethnicity - just like skin quality differs. The enamel, surface hardness, and even color tone differ. So whether it suits your teeth is actually questionable. So it might whiten your teeth, but there's a possibility it could damage the tooth quality and cause problems? That's exactly the point where I can't recommend it as a dentist. It's not so common now, but in the past, people would use unclear products from overseas websites and experience irritation, or thinking it was good for them, keep using it only to find their discoloration got worse, or experienced skin/gum irritation. Now that imported products face regulations, this happens less. But somehow, even though people worry about their skin, they seem to think their teeth will be fine regardless. It is the hardest part of the human body after all. People don't think toothpaste alone could cause any issues. That's true, but sometimes by the time trouble occurs, it's too late. What kind of specific troubles could occur? Well, your gums could become inflamed. If you have persistent mouth ulcers that won't heal, it could be because you're using the wrong toothpaste. The ingredients really vary widely. To remove discoloration, abrasive cleansers used to be the mainstream ingredient in the past. But now, since we're in an era where people live to 100, toothpaste is developed with an emphasis on how to keep your teeth beautiful long-term. So rather than scraping it off, there are more products designed to lift and remove stains, and if you choose these properly, you won't damage your teeth or gums. If you want to choose something that suits you or a toothpaste you can trust, should you ask your dentist? That would be the fastest and safest way. Since self-treatment is genuinely risky, it's better to avoid ordering unknown products from abroad. For example, is it best to ask at the clinic where you work, or ask a dentist, 'I want to take care of my teeth, do you have any recommended toothpaste?' Yes, and it also helps to clearly communicate your desire to have whiter, cleaner teeth. Going to a cosmetic dermatology clinic clearly means you want to become more beautiful, right? But with dentistry, that's surprisingly hard to convey. There are departments like cosmetic dentistry, but... But it does seem like it's not that widely known. That's right. It's not well recognized, and if the dentist is male, it can be harder for them to pick up on such nuances. So even if you go wanting cleaner teeth, sometimes they'll just treat the problem areas, saying 'you have a cavity here,' or clean your tartar and that's it. So it's better to clearly express your desire to make your teeth whiter at the dental clinic. So it's about clearly saying, 'please clean them, remove tartar, and also, I'd like to whiten them additionally.' That's important. Having said that, for people who want to go to the dentist but find it hard to make the visit, or who suddenly run out of toothpaste and need something right away, is there any store-bought product with good ingredients you'd recommend? There are so many toothpastes lined up, so it can be tricky, but products in a certain price range tend to be better. That's because a gentle formulation for teeth is key. Labels often mention things like 'lifts away stains,' so it's good to read carefully and choose. Products often mention whitening too, so choosing those helps. Also, dental-exclusive products tend to contain more active ingredients. For example, products labeled 'white' often say things like 'helps remove stains.' Oh really, like polyethylene glycol for removing tobacco tar, and fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate - the ingredients are listed like this. So having clear labeling like that is one good indicator. That's meant for the white part of your teeth. Gums are a different, softer tissue, so it's separate. Separate? I only use one type. It's better to think of tooth care and gum care as somewhat separate. Doctor, do you use two different types? I use a lot. It changes every time. It changes every time? It might even change by time of day. One for morning, one after lunch, one at night. One for night too? Yes, they're all different. My bathroom sink has toothpaste tubes lined up everywhere, and I pick based on the day. It's not about flavor, is it? It's not about flavor. It's about my own condition. Condition? If I think, 'I drank a lot of coffee today,' I'll use this one. If my mouth feels dry, I'll use a gel-type one. Also, I really like electric toothbrushes, so if I want to take my time and do a massage-like brushing, I'll use something with a thicker, more gel-like texture. It's really refreshing. Do you always have around 10 types on hand? I'm always rotating them, especially by season. I also buy extras to give as gifts to friends depending on their concerns. Actually, the toothpaste you gave me was really good. Same brand, but different for morning. I thought I received two of the same, but one said morning and one said night. Exactly, they're properly designed as a lineup. I'll explain more another time. Actually, Dr. Teruyama also has a YouTube channel where she talks about this in detail, so if you're interested, please check out Dr. Teruyama's channel. You can see what I received, and how particular the doctor is about her choices - it's surprising! From casual talk about whitening to how particular the doctor really is - I'll be sending her a message every time I buy toothpaste or a toothbrush from now on. Yes, please do. Using just one type is normal, right? I'm not being low-maintenance or anything, right? Everyone's taken aback, giving that 'who is this person' look. Oh no, what if the comments say, 'Doctor, only one type? That's not good!' To properly protect your teeth, it's important to consider dental health, appearance, whitening, and choosing the right toothpaste. Exactly. So, I still have many things I want to ask the doctor, so please join us again. Of course. So today, we talked with dentist Dr. Teruyama about teeth whitening and how to choose toothpaste. See you next time. Thank you. Alright, that's all for today.
