Hello everyone, this is Tomori Arada. Now that it's June, I'm sure you're seeing news about the rainy season starting in various regions. There's a skincare step I really want you to try at the start of the rainy season, so today I'll explain it thoroughly. Please watch until the end.
The skincare step I want you to try when the rainy season begins is exfoliation (dead skin cell care). When you hear "exfoliation," you might think of acne or pores, and of course I want people dealing with those issues to try it. But I also want those of you who think "I'm already an adult, exfoliation doesn't concern me" to know that it actually does concern you. And if you've been hesitant about exfoliation thinking it's risky, please give it a try during this season.
So what exactly is exfoliation? In human skin, cells are born in the basal layer and continue to grow. Eventually, they lose their nucleus and become dead cells, which form the stratum corneum (outer skin layer). Once this reaches a certain thickness, it sheds off—this is called skin turnover. As we get older, this turnover process becomes irregular, which is something you've probably heard before. When turnover becomes irregular, dead skin cells accumulate, causing rough texture and dull-looking pores.
Why does the stratum corneum become harder to shed as we age? There are proteins that bind the layers of dead skin cells together, and there's an enzyme system that cuts these proteins at the right time so the cells can shed naturally. This system works well when we're young, but factors like UV exposure, oxidation, and protein denaturation gradually reduce these enzymes, causing the stratum corneum to thicken. In other words, simply aging causes dead skin buildup, so proper care is necessary.
Additionally, people prone to acne often have a tendency toward thicker stratum corneum. When sebum production increases, oil accumulates as it's released from pores, causing inflammation in the stratum corneum and making it thicker. So both acne-prone skin and those with excess sebum production tend to have thickened stratum corneum.
However, the same care isn't appropriate for both those with excess sebum/acne-prone skin and those whose stratum corneum has thickened due to aging. The stratum corneum protects the skin's barrier function, so overdoing exfoliation can weaken this barrier, leading to dry skin or stinging sensations when exposed to stimuli. The stratum corneum also acts like a natural sunscreen, providing some protection against UV rays.
Why is the rainy season particularly good for exfoliation? Because UV rays are weaker and outdoor humidity increases. Since exfoliation can sometimes lead to dryness, periods with higher humidity are more suitable. So if you've been hesitant about exfoliating, this rainy season is a great time to try it.
Since people with excess sebum production need different products than adults dealing with age-related buildup, I'll introduce items by skin type today.
【1】For those concerned about acne/pores but who also have sensitive skin from mask-wearing (a tricky combination of excess sebum, acne-prone skin, and sensitivity)
Due to increased sebum production and friction from wearing masks, many people who weren't previously sensitive have developed sensitive skin. For this skin type, I recommend La Roche-Posay's "Effaclar Peeling Care Serum."
La Roche-Posay is known for products geared toward sensitive skin, but the combination of "sensitive skin with frequent acne" has actually become more common recently. This serum contains three classic exfoliating acids: salicylic acid, lactic acid, and phytic acid.
Salicylic acid is the same acid dermatologists use in chemical peels for acne treatment. It's oil-soluble, so it penetrates deep into pores even on oily skin, providing effective exfoliation—making it suitable for those with excess sebum or acne-prone skin.
Lactic acid is water-soluble and milder than salicylic acid. In dermatological chemical peels, we choose between salicylic acid and lactic acid (or a combination) based on the patient's skin condition. This serum contains both, providing thorough care while maintaining gentleness.
Phytic acid, despite its name suggesting it's an acid, is actually an antioxidant. When UV exposure triggers melanin production, an enzyme called tyrosinase requires copper to become active, and iron uptake is also involved. Phytic acid is known to inhibit this copper and iron uptake, helping support skin clarity.
The serum also contains niacinamide, which has anti-inflammatory properties that help prevent skin irritation. La Roche-Posay's signature Thermal Spring Water contains a mineral called selenium, which has been shown to strengthen the stratum corneum's barrier function. Together, niacinamide and thermal water strengthen the skin barrier, making this formula suitable even for sensitive skin.
You might expect salicylic acid and lactic acid to cause stinging, but I didn't experience much irritation at all. It's non-comedogenic and allergy-tested, so if you have sensitive skin but are concerned about acne, this is worth checking out.
【2】Two items for those who may be experiencing age-related buildup of dead skin cells
The first is Cosme Decorte's "Snow Clarifier," and the second is bareMinerals' "AGL Phyto Radiance Facial Mask." Both focus on the fact that the enzymes responsible for shedding the stratum corneum decrease as we age.
Cosme Decorte Snow Clarifier doesn't contain salicylic acid or lactic acid, making it safe for adults who find exfoliating acids too stimulating. It's a wipe-off essence with enough thickness that you can apply generously and press-and-lift rather than rubbing, which also helps minimize friction.
This product focuses on enzymes. Cosme Decorte's proprietary "Aqua Facial Refining Factor" complex contains humus extract (derived from decomposed plant matter), Lacto SP, cetyl lactate, theanine, and Japanese pepper tree (Zanthoxylum) extract. Humus extract is believed to activate an enzyme called kallikrein 5, which breaks down the adhesive proteins between dead skin cells. Since kallikrein 5 decreases with age, this ingredient helps support natural exfoliation.
Additionally, since the stratum corneum is made of protein, it undergoes a process called carbonylation—a form of oxidation. When sebum and UV exposure cause carbonylation, it leads to yellowish dullness. It's important to both remove carbonylated dead skin through turnover/exfoliation and prevent carbonylation itself through antioxidants. This antioxidant role is played by the Zanthoxylum extract. By combining humus extract to activate kallikrein 5 for natural exfoliation, and Zanthoxylum extract to prevent carbonylation for brightness, this is truly a gentle, adult-friendly exfoliating item.
The second product, bareMinerals' "AGL Phyto Radiance Facial Mask," is a pink mask applied to the whole face and rinsed off. Since bareMinerals caters to sensitive skin and vegan/natural-oriented consumers, it's free of salicylic acid and lactic acid, causing minimal irritation. Since you simply apply and rinse, there's almost no friction involved.
This product also focuses on adhesion factors. In addition to kallikrein 5, another enzyme called cathepsin D (an aspartic protease) is involved in stratum corneum shedding. This enzyme also decreases with age, but its activation depends on adequate hydration (i.e., not being dry). Since skin tends to become drier as we age, this enzyme's function tends to decline as well.
A proprietary bareMinerals ingredient called "Phyto Retino" (derived from Mucor miehei extract, sourced from mushrooms) works similarly to cathepsin D to promote shedding of the stratum corneum. It's fascinating that such an ingredient comes from mushrooms! The mask also contains natural glycerin, so after leaving it on for about 15 minutes and rinsing off, your skin feels bright yet moisturized. The Cosme Decorte product also contains moisturizing ingredients, giving it a thick, jelly-like texture that you apply with cotton and wipe off. I felt minimal irritation from either product.
Exfoliation tends to be associated only with acne-prone skin, but I want people dealing with acne, as well as adults experiencing irregular turnover due to aging, to give it a try. With weaker UV rays and higher outdoor humidity during this season, now is the perfect time for exfoliating care. There are products available tailored to different skin types, so please check them out.
