Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today I'd like to talk about carbonation, which everyone loves.
I think many people are into carbonated beauty treatments. Carbonated packs are extremely popular, and facial washes using carbonated bubbles have also been coming out a lot.
So how exactly does carbonation benefit the skin? It's been widely said that carbonation itself promotes blood circulation. This blood flow promotion improves complexion, and when blood flow improves, the skin's moisture content increases, so in that sense it mainly helps prevent dryness and similar issues. But when we say "carbonation" in one word, some products contain only a little, while others contain a high concentration. And in order to promote blood circulation, the carbonation needs to be at a high concentration — otherwise it's meaningless. So whether the carbonation product you're using is high concentration or not becomes the key point.
Many people probably imagine carbonation as something that fizzes out with a "shoo" sound, but there's a trick to that. Even when something is labeled as "carbonated," if the foam is created using LP gas, it typically doesn't contain a very high concentration of carbonation. On the other hand, products that do contain a truly high concentration of carbonation tend not to produce large, fizzy bubbles easily. Why is that? Because bubbles have a tendency to spread out, making it difficult to create a rich, fluffy foam with carbonation alone. That's why carbonation products have tended to be carbonated packs rather than facial washes.
Speaking of carbonation, Kao has done it again. Kao has previously released carbonated serums, but recently they've gone beyond serums to create a carbonated foam facial wash. The idea was to not only promote blood flow when washing the face, but also to remove sebum using the foam itself rather than relying on cleansing agents. And what they came up with is amazing — this is the Sofina iP Renew Mousse Wash.
This high-concentration carbonated foam might sound rather unremarkable — you might think, "It's just carbonated foam, that's been around forever, no big deal." But that's not the case at all! This is likely a product packed with technology found nowhere else but in Sofina.
So what is this technology? It turns out that when you add a high concentration of carbonation, the foam tends not to firm up into a mousse-like texture. With a serum, it's fine if it collapses a bit since it's just applied to the skin, but with a foam facial wash, it needs to hold its whipped texture firmly without collapsing. So the research began with the question: how can we make the foam firm and elastic?
The technology they applied to solve this is called foam-fixing technology, using something called PIC. PIC is a nanopolymer. Since foam naturally tends to spread out on its own, PIC works to suppress that spreading. Specifically, it carries both positive and negative charges, so it enters the foam and surrounds the tiny bubble particles. This way, when the bubbles try to spread, PIC protects them, keeping the foam firmly fixed without spreading.
As a result, the small particles of carbonation become tightly condensed, allowing both a firmer foam and a high concentration of carbonation to be applied to the skin — achieving two effects at once. This means carbonation not only penetrates the skin properly to improve blood circulation, but it's also been found to enhance the penetration of skincare ingredients.
Now, you might think that's just about the foam feeling nice and firm — but that's not all! There's an even greater effect: it enables thorough cleansing of sebum.
You might wonder, "But doctor, if it cleanses sebum thoroughly, doesn't that mean it contains lots of surfactants that damage the skin?" But here again, this PIC technology — this nanopolymer — does excellent work. Here's how: typical cleansers work by having surfactants attach to dirt, lift it up, and rinse it away with water. Carbonation itself, unlike surfactants, doesn't damage the skin. However, this only works when the foam is highly concentrated and extremely fine. Thanks to PIC, the foam becomes smaller, the bubbles don't stick together, and a dense foam is created, making this possible.
And here's another interesting point: PIC is apparently extremely incompatible with surfactants. So in order to incorporate PIC technology, the amount of surfactant must be drastically reduced. Normally, that would mean losing cleansing power. But by incorporating PIC, surfactant levels can be lowered while still using the high-concentration carbonation to remove sebum without burdening the skin — making it a wonderfully gentle cleanser for people with dry or sensitive skin.
And there's yet another amazing feature: PIC has the property of remaining on the skin and drawing in moisture, so after washing, some moisture is retained on the skin. It's truly a multi-talented ingredient with moisture-retention capability as well.
So to summarize: first, in order to incorporate a high concentration of carbonation, they focused intensely on the foam itself. That pursuit led them to PIC technology. PIC has both positive and negative charges, and by binding together, it makes the bubbles smaller, allowing a high concentration of carbonation to be incorporated. On top of that, PIC is inherently incompatible with surfactants, so if surfactants are added, PIC can't be incorporated — which is why it hasn't been widely used in cosmetics before. But precisely because Kao has this high-concentration carbonation technology, they were able to maintain a certain level of cleansing power — properly removing sebum — even without surfactants. Additionally, since PIC can retain moisture, this is a wonderful facial wash for people with combination-troubled skin, where sebum is produced but the inside feels dry, and using a strong cleanser would just dry it out further.
For the upcoming season, a facial wash that cleanses thoroughly and removes sebum without burdening the skin through foam, while retaining moisture and improving blood circulation — this seems like the perfect facial wash for this time of year.
What did you think? In a word, it's simply amazing. I don't think incorporating PIC technology into cosmetics had really been considered before, because cosmetics without surfactants are quite rare. I think Kao, with their high-concentration carbonation technology, focused sharply on this and found a great combination that lets their strengths shine. Once again, I was struck by how amazing researchers are, and I wanted to share that with everyone, which is why I made this video.
In short, the technology here is truly amazing. It's "just foam," but foam matters. If you've felt like something wasn't quite right with your current facial wash, or if you experience both dryness and stickiness like I mentioned earlier, or if you find facial washing leaves your skin feeling uncomfortably dry, I think this is worth trying.
Thank you for watching until the end today. Whenever I come across another amazing cosmetic product like this, I'll be sure to share it with you all, so please look forward to the next video. See you in the next one. Goodbye.
