Hello everyone, welcome to our new segment called "Let's Talk About the Latest Medical Papers from Around the World." I'm always gathering the latest beauty and medical information, and there's a site called PubMed where you can read medical papers, so I pick out some interesting ones and discuss them with Nobori-kun in this corner. These are topics that will continue to be researched, so they're not absolute conclusions, but papers can be quite interesting, so let's enjoy them together in an easy-to-understand way with Nobori-kun.
First, there are a lot of papers about caffeine and coffee. One from 2025 is titled "The Effects of Exercise and Caffeine Intake on Aging." Normally you'd think exercise slows aging while excessive caffeine speeds it up. Indeed, half of the world's diseases are said to be caused by aging, so "anti-aging" is really important for health—that's where this study starts.
They investigated the correlation between exercise levels and caffeine intake with biological aging, looking at weekly exercise time and caffeine consumption while controlling for race, obesity, income, and so on. The result, perhaps not surprising, was that people who exercised more suppressed aging progression, but caffeine had no effect.
Isn't that interesting? We tend to think drinking coffee makes you healthier, but caffeine itself doesn't relate much to health levels—exercise is more effective. So caffeine doesn't really have a rejuvenating effect. Pretty interesting, right?
Next is a paper titled "Badminton is Effective for Improving Mental Health."
— Is that really a published paper?
Amazing, right? Someone who loves badminton probably did this research. It suggests that badminton significantly improved sleep quality in graduate students with sleep disorders, reduced anxiety levels, and lowered resting heart rate. Isn't this paper amazing? It's not just about exercising in general—badminton specifically had this effect, and the paper discusses differences based on the type of badminton training.
Students with insomnia or anxiety underwent badminton-specific training, and their sleep quality improved and anxiety decreased.
When you're anxious, your heart rate rises, but that decreased too. No medication was used at all. Amazing, right? It states that specialized badminton training has fundamental applications for enhancing mental health and cardiovascular health. Amazing.
— That is amazing, but I'm curious how it would compare to other sports.
The experimental group trained 3 times a week for 1 hour each, over 12 weeks. It might not have needed to be badminton specifically, but it's impressive that they randomly assigned 160 college students for this study.
— Badminton really is that kind of exercise, isn't it? People today tend to be hunched over.
That's true in that sense. It might not have to be badminton—volleyball could work too—but when you can't sleep or feel anxious, playing badminton outside is a good option.
— You can do it lightly, too.
Just enough to get your breathing up a bit.
— I used to play it a lot on the street.
— On the street?
— In front of my house as a kid.
There might be a badminton boom coming. People say "let's exercise" but it's hard to actually go do it. But playing badminton in the park wouldn't get you in trouble, right? Ball games might be prohibited, but badminton should be fine. If you've been feeling anxious or can't sleep lately, try playing badminton. An hour might be a bit long, but if you enjoy it, I think badminstill become more popular in the future.
There's also a lot of coffee-related research. One paper is titled "Just 1-2 Cups of Coffee Reduces the Risk of Constipation." This might be good news for some people. Since many people drink coffee, this data looks at the relationship between alcohol, coffee intake, and constipation. The relationship between coffee intake and constipation remains unclear, so this study aimed to investigate coffee consumption and constipation risk. It included 7,844 participants from 2007 to 2010, with coffee intake assessed through 24-hour dietary recalls, distinguishing between caffeinated and non-caffeinated coffee.
Drinking 3 cups a day reduced constipation risk by 88%. Daily consumption of 1-2 cups of caffeinated coffee was associated with reduced constipation risk in the general population. Therefore, moderate caffeinated coffee consumption could be an effective dietary strategy for managing constipation in the general population. Isn't that fascinating? It also mentions that alcohol consumption might have an effect, but of course it's still important to get enough dietary fiber to feed your gut bacteria. Still, when it comes to constipation alone, coffee might be beneficial.
— Nobori-kun, do you have constipation?
— No, I don't.
— Doesn't seem like it.
— Yeah, I have regular bowel movements.
— Regular, huh?
— But sometimes it feels a bit hard...
— Then it's coffee time.
— But honestly, maybe it's really about drinking enough water.
— True, true.
Next, since many people are dealing with mental health these days, there's a paper titled "Laughing Alone Affects Mental Health."
— Do I talk to myself a lot?
— True, true.
It might seem embarrassing or even strange to others, but laughing alone might actually improve mental health. Laughter is often seen as a social behavior, and laughing alone has often been viewed with suspicion, even considered pathological. Solitary laughter has been thought of as a sign of mental health issues, but this study explored whether laughter itself could bring psychological benefits, researching laughter and well-being. The act of laughing itself is positive for one's mental health, so even laughing alone—if you find something enjoyable—is a good thing.
— That's wonderful.
Laughing together with Nobori-kun like "hahaha" is important too, but laughing alone while watching anime or chuckling while reading a book is also good for your mental health. So laughter is good no matter the situation, right?
— That's true.
— What made you laugh recently?
— When the teacher misspoke earlier, I laughed too.
— That's heartwarming.
Finally, there's a paper about cheese and obesity prevention.
— Do you like cheese?
— I can eat solid cheese, but I prefer the melted kind, like on pizza.
— That does sound delicious.
There's research on the relationship between dairy consumption and reduced obesity risk. Generally, higher dairy consumption is thought to lead to larger body size, but this study evaluated the relationship between different types of dairy consumption and obesity among adults in Chile.
— I see.
Looking at the data, it turns out that obese subjects actually consumed less dairy than those of normal weight.
— That's surprising.
Furthermore, higher cheese consumption was significantly associated with lower obesity risk. Pretty surprising, right? No association was found with other types of dairy consumption. As a result, in this sample of Chilean adults, cheese consumption was associated with reduced obesity risk.
— So it's good to eat it.
— It seems so, but since it's Chilean people, it might vary by ethnicity too.
— Nobori-kun, do you eat cheese often?
— No, not really.
— Ah, that's why then.
— If I eat cheese, will I lose weight?
It's not that eating cheese itself makes you lose weight, but rather that having a lifestyle that includes cheese might be good.
— I eat burrata cheese with tomatoes at home sometimes.
— Exactly, that kind of thing.
— Like adding it to salads and stuff.
— But cheese seems like it would make you gain weight...
— Maybe the melty kind of cheese isn't common in Chile?
— The "bad" kind of cheese, you mean?
Cheese does have fat, but it doesn't really seem unhealthy, does it?
— Maybe it depends on the dish it's used in.
— Yeah, I think it's about the cooking.
In stew-type dishes, there's mozzarella or blue cheese and such—so it's probably not the melty pizza cheese, but rather the type of cheese Chilean people eat that's good for the body. You can't just jump to conclusions from reading a paper alone, so digging deeper into the context is interesting.
— That is interesting, indeed.
What do you think of this series? We could broaden the scope to cover things like menopause too. If we get good feedback, we'll continue this series. If not, we'll reconsider, so please bear with us. So, how did you find today's episode? It was a bit different from usual, but if you enjoyed it, please give it a thumbs up. Also, feel free to comment with papers you've found interesting. Thank you, Nobori-kun, for today. See you in the next video. Bye-bye.
