Hello everyone, I'm Tomoni Arata. Today I'd like to introduce five things I absolutely never do in order to avoid aging, so please watch until the end.
I'm 43 years old this year, and my birthday is March 30th, so I'll be turning 44 next March. I don't just want to look young on the outside — I want to keep my body young on the inside too, and stay energetic for as long as possible. With that in mind, there are certain habits beyond skincare that I have firmly decided never to do, in order to stay young from the inside out.
The reason I focus on things I won't do rather than things I will do is that there are already so many things to do. With a busy job and childcare, it's more efficient and less stressful to simply avoid certain things. If I manage to do the things I want to do, great — but I don't pressure myself. I hope this can serve as a reference for you.
So, let's get started. The first thing I absolutely never do to avoid aging is browse the aisles inside convenience stores.
Convenience stores come in various layouts, but usually cup noodles and snacks are placed on the inner shelves, aren't they? I'm only human, so if I see something that looks delicious, I'll end up buying it. When you're hungry, everything looks tempting. So when I go to a convenience store, I head straight to the sandwich or bento section, choose something low in carbohydrates, and for dessert I pick something like yogurt. Then I grab water or tea, glance at the magazine section, and head to the register. If I wander into the middle aisles, I'll inevitably want to grab sweets or snacks, so I stick to the outer areas and never browse the inner shelves.
Sweets and similar foods cause glycation and oxidation in the body, which promotes inflammation. Having them occasionally is fine — but unless I've decided it's a day to indulge, I try not to pick them up carelessly.
The second thing I absolutely never do to avoid aging is extreme dieting.
You might be thinking, "Wait, didn't you just say the opposite?" Of course, dieting in the sense of avoiding sweets and exercising properly is something I do. But what I consider "extreme dieting" is things like completely eliminating sweets, cutting out all carbohydrates, or running many kilometers every day.
Sweets do raise blood sugar and, in excess, can cause glycation and inflammation in the body. But there's another danger — stress. Stress makes the body prone to inflammation, and intense exercise actually oxidizes the body. The stress caused by extreme dietary restriction or excessive exercise is significant. Also, as we age, our faces can become gaunt and drawn, which makes us look older. If you want your skin to have elasticity and radiance, you can't strip away too much. Maintaining an appropriate weight is important — being too thin is just as problematic as being overweight. Rather than focusing on quantity of food, I focus on quality. I keep the amount roughly the same but improve what I eat, which is why I don't do extreme dieting.
The third thing I absolutely never do to avoid aging is facial massage.
Dermatologists generally don't recommend facial massages. Professional estheticians are skilled at using a very gentle touch, but when ordinary people do it themselves, they tend to rub too hard. I personally am bothered by dryness in certain areas, and friction makes the face red and prone to inflammation. As we age, dryness, age spots, and reduced skin barrier function become more common — and adding friction on top of that can worsen dryness, darken spots, and cause itching.
If you really feel like you want to massage your face, it's usually because of puffiness. In that case, instead of massaging, I recommend applying gentle pressure — like taking a blood pressure reading. I sometimes press on acupressure points myself, but I avoid sliding or circular massage motions. I don't do facial massage as part of my anti-aging routine.
The fourth thing I absolutely never do to avoid aging is leaving my smartphone on my nightstand.
Of course I can't live without my phone — for emails, calls, checking social media, and yes, YouTube (I hope you're watching mine!). But one major cause of physical aging and damage is sleep deprivation. Looking at your phone before bed can make it hard to fall asleep. Sleep quality isn't just about how many hours you get — it's about how deep your sleep is.
There used to be a popular idea that the skin's "golden time" was between midnight and 2 a.m. But we now know that's outdated. What's actually important is entering deep sleep within the first three hours of falling asleep, which is when growth hormone and other beneficial hormones are released. If you're exposed to the bright light and stimulation of a smartphone right up until bedtime, your sleep quality suffers even if you do fall asleep. That means your body loses its repair time and the hormonal processes that keep us healthy — which I believe is one of the major drivers of aging.
I don't leave my phone completely out of the bedroom — I use it as an alarm and need it in case of emergencies. But rather than keeping it on the nightstand where I can reach it easily, I place it under a cushion at the foot of the bed. For getting quality sleep and keeping your autonomic nervous system and hormones balanced, I'd also suggest watching my YouTube videos with earphones instead of looking at the screen — low stimulation before bed makes a big difference.
The fifth thing I absolutely never do to avoid aging is getting a suntan.
If you've watched this channel before, you probably saw this one coming. Seventy percent of skin aging is caused by photoaging — UV rays from the sun are a primary cause of spots, wrinkles, and sagging, so please try to avoid sun exposure as much as possible.
Recently, some people advocate getting sunlight because it promotes vitamin D synthesis, which has benefits for health. In that case, I'd suggest exposing just your hands or feet to the sun. I personally supplement vitamin D through capsules. Of course, light exposure is important in the right context — sleeping in a dark room and opening the curtains in the morning to get some light is beneficial. But deliberately sunbathing is something I, as a dermatologist, can't recommend. I avoid it myself. If you're concerned about vitamin D, try supplementing it instead.
To summarize, the five things I absolutely never do to avoid aging are:
1. Don't browse the inner aisles of convenience stores — avoid eating unnecessary things.
2. Don't do extreme dieting — it can make your face look gaunt and cause bodily inflammation through stress.
3. Don't do facial massage — to avoid causing skin inflammation.
4. Don't leave your smartphone on the nightstand — even if you bring it to the bedroom, keep it away from your pillow.
5. Don't get a suntan — since photoaging accounts for 70% of skin aging.
By following these five rules, I try to look younger than my actual age — not in an over-the-top way, but just to come across as energetic and happy. I hope this is helpful to some of you.
