That product is Rohto Pharmaceutical's "Hada Labo Gokujun Premium." The Hada Labo series by Rohto Pharmaceutical is a staple in Japanese drugstores. Its star ingredient is hyaluronic acid, which everyone knows well. When the first product launched in 2004, hyaluronic acid was considered a relatively premium ingredient with limited variety. What made Rohto remarkable was their decision to pack hyaluronic acid generously into a toner priced under 1,000 yen — creating a massive hit. Since then, the line has expanded with upgraded formulas and variations featuring ingredients like brightening agents. Rohto is, as its name suggests, a pharmaceutical company. While hyaluronic acid is strongly associated with skincare, it actually plays important roles in various organs throughout the body — including the eyes. The eyeball contains abundant hyaluronic acid, and research in the ophthalmology field has investigated its role in corneal repair, functioning as a bioactive substance that sends signals to aid in tissue regeneration. The new Gokujun Premium adds two more types. The first new addition is "penetrating hyaluronic acid" (ingredient name: hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid / nano-hyaluronic acid). In addition to attracting moisture, it also stimulates the skin's own natural production of hyaluronic acid — meaning it not only moisturizes but also helps the skin generate more hyaluronic acid on its own. The second addition is "fermented hyaluronic acid" (ingredient name: lactobacillus/hyaluronic acid ferment filtrate). This ingredient has been shown to strengthen the skin's barrier function. Combined with the promotion of hyaluronic acid synthesis, these two additions go beyond basic hydration to support the skin's fundamental functions. You might wonder: how is this different from other hyaluronic acid products? This is where Rohto's strength as a pharmaceutical company truly shines. At the 78th Annual Meeting of the Society for Investigative Dermatology (SID) held this past May, groundbreaking research was presented. When skin is damaged by UV rays or other stressors, cells not only break down but also release substances called DAMPs (Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns). These DAMPs bind to receptors on neighboring cells, triggering a chain reaction of damage that spreads beyond the original injury site. The research revealed that the newly added penetrating hyaluronic acid in Gokujun Premium can bind to those receptors before DAMPs do, effectively blocking the DAMPs from attaching. This prevents the inflammatory signal from cascading to surrounding cells. In other words, hyaluronic acid has a newly discovered function: not just moisturizing and supporting barrier integrity, but actually suppressing the chain reaction of skin inflammation. It's worth noting that the newly released "Hada Labo Gokujun Hyaluronic Acid" (in a whiter packaging) contains fermented hyaluronic acid but not penetrating hyaluronic acid. The inflammation-blocking penetrating hyaluronic acid is exclusive to the yellowish-packaged "Hada Labo Gokujun Premium Hyaluronic Acid" product.
