Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori. It's been so cold lately — how is everyone holding up? Since the new year, temperatures have dropped sharply, and we've even had snow here in Tokyo. Cold weather brings all kinds of infections, right? Both the flu and common colds are going around, and I hear many people are feeling under the weather. Among all the symptoms of infections, coughing is one of the most persistent and exhausting. Even after a fever breaks, coughs tend to linger. In today's world, coughing in public can feel awkward, and it can disrupt your sleep and seriously affect your quality of life. So today, I'd like to introduce foods and daily habits that can help prevent coughs or ease them when they occur. Please watch until the end! --- ■ Why Do We Cough? Coughing is one of the body's defense mechanisms. When foreign substances — such as viruses, dust, or other irritants — enter the body, coughing helps expel them. Irritants in the airway are detected by "cough receptors," which send a signal to the brain's "cough center," triggering a cough. Inflammation in the airway can also stimulate these receptors and cause coughing, even without a foreign substance present. --- ■ Types of Cough (Classified by Duration) Coughs are broadly classified into three types based on how long they last: ① Acute cough (less than 3 weeks) Mostly caused by viral infections that inflame the airways. ② Subacute cough (3 weeks to less than 2 months) More commonly caused by non-viral pathogens such as Mycoplasma or Bordetella pertussis (whooping cough). ③ Chronic cough (2 months or more) Less likely to be related to infection. Common causes include allergies, cough-variant asthma, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If your cough lasts more than 2 months, please see a specialist such as a pulmonologist. In this video, I'll focus on coughs that linger after an infection (acute to subacute). --- ■ Daily Habits to Ease Coughing ① Sleeping position Sleeping on your side helps keep your airway open and can make coughing less frequent. Using a pillow to slightly elevate your upper body can also prevent post-nasal drip — where mucus drips down the back of your throat and triggers coughing. ② Keep your throat warm Cold air and an exposed neck can irritate your airways. Wear a neck warmer or turtleneck to keep your throat warm, and drink something warm before bed to soothe your airways. ③ Prevent dryness Dry air is a common cough trigger. Use a humidifier or wear a damp mask to keep your throat moisturized. --- ■ 5 Foods That Help with Coughs ① Ginger Ginger contains a compound called "gingerol," which has been shown to help dilate the bronchial tubes. In addition to warming the body and throat, ginger can help open up the airways and ease coughing. ② Honey (especially Manuka honey) Honey contains "glucose oxidase," which has antibacterial and moisturizing properties that help keep the airways hydrated. Some studies even show that warm milk with honey can reduce the number of days a child experiences coughing. Manuka honey is particularly recommended for its stronger antibacterial and moisturizing effects. ⚠️ Never give honey to infants under 1 year of age. ③ Daikon radish Daikon contains "isothiocyanate," a compound with anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce airway inflammation and ease coughing. A traditional remedy involves soaking thin slices of daikon in honey — the flavor reportedly becomes apple-like, making it easier for children to eat as well. ④ Asian pear (Nashi pear) Nashi pears contain "aspartic acid" and "sorbitol," which are believed to help suppress coughing. They're also high in water content, which helps keep the throat moist. Enjoy them when they're in season! ⑤ Lotus root Lotus root contains "tannins," which have anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce inflammation in the throat and airways, thereby easing coughs. Try adding thin-sliced lotus root and ginger to miso soup for a soothing, cough-relieving meal. --- ■ Summary Coughing is a natural defense mechanism, but when it lingers, it can significantly impact your quality of life. A cough lasting more than 2 months may be caused by something other than an infection, so please see a doctor if that's the case. For shorter-duration coughs, adjusting your daily habits and incorporating anti-inflammatory foods into your diet can help provide relief. Stay warm as the cold weather continues. First and foremost, try to avoid getting sick — but if a lingering cough is getting you down, I hope these tips are helpful!
