Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori.
I'd like to talk about beauty treatments that I felt were worth the money I spent on them. I work at a beauty clinic myself, and I also originally had skin concerns, so I've tried various treatments and beauty methods. Honestly, there were some I thought were good, and some I felt I didn't need to do. So these are the treatments that I—someone who struggled with acne and had oily, sebum-prone skin—found worthwhile. I'll explain specifically why I found each one good and what symptoms it helped with, so please use this as a reference if you'd like.
The first one is treating acne at a clinic. Honestly, acne is a chronic skin disease. So while changing your skincare or using over-the-counter medications can work as first aid, they can't cure everything on their own.
The treatments I did started with insurance-covered treatments—topical medications and ointments. Since this was over 20 years ago, there weren't medications like today's, so about the only options were things like sulfur camphor lotion to dry out the skin, or applying antibiotics. Honestly, those weren't effective, so the next step I took was chemical peeling. At the time, chemical peeling itself hadn't even been introduced to Japan yet, and perhaps because my face was so covered in acne, the dermatologist at the time said something like, "You'll be my test subject, so let's try it," and that's how I started peeling. After that, peeling became available at various clinics, so I would get it once a month, or even every two weeks when it was severe.
Actually, I have a condition called endometriosis, and my acne would inevitably worsen during my period, along with hormonal imbalances. When I had a blood test done, it showed I had somewhat elevated male hormones, so I also took a medication called Aldactone as part of my treatment. The acne along my jawline calmed down quite a bit. After that, low-dose birth control pills were approved, so I started taking those, which regulated my hormone balance and reduced how much I was troubled by acne.
So depending on my age at the time and how severe my acne was, I properly changed my treatment accordingly. I was able to do this not really because I'm a doctor myself, but because my doctor at the time had a certain level of knowledge, and rather than treating myself, I properly discussed things with my dermatologist and changed treatments together.
The reason my acne cleared up almost completely, I believe, is because I started dermatological treatment early. People with excessive sebum production tend to have less sebum production as they age, and their skin ages more slowly—there's such a tendency. So for people struggling with acne right now, I really think it's worth spending money on proper acne treatment so scars don't remain, and to avoid it becoming a permanent mark as you age. So the first thing is properly treating acne at a clinic.
Second, medical laser hair removal for the face. I've had full-body hair removal, but among all of that, what I found truly worthwhile for beautiful skin was facial hair removal. One cause of acne is sebum accumulating in the pores. Also, when sebum production is active, the pores can appear dark or more visible. I was troubled by that pore darkness just as much as acne, and while peeling and acne treatments that control sebum production improved things to some extent, areas like around the nose, under the mouth, and the jawline have naturally dark hair in Japanese people, and since I was quite hairy myself, I had my entire face treated with hair removal. The darkness that was visible because of the hair disappeared, and since the laser removes the hair, the pores in that area became tighter as well.
Facial laser treatment can sometimes trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, but in my case, I had laser hair removal done all over my face in my late 20s, so by the time areas prone to pigmentation would have been affected, the laser hair removal was already mostly finished. So because I did facial hair removal early, my pores became tighter and less dark, and I still think it was worth doing for beautiful skin.
Next, third, fractional laser. Once my acne finally settled down around age 27-28, I became much more concerned about the pigmentation and bumpy texture left by acne, to the point where I was wearing quite heavy makeup. That's when fractional laser came along. It works by applying laser energy to cause a certain amount of damage to the skin, and as it regenerates, it reduces the bumpy texture. I did fractional laser a total of maybe 3 to 4 times. When treated, I did get scabbing and there was downtime, but the indentations improved to a certain degree. Of course, it didn't improve everything completely, but even if scarring remains despite trying not to create it in the first place, fractional laser can help make it look better.
Next, the fourth thing I found worthwhile for beautiful skin is Botox. Many of you probably know this, but Botox is a wrinkle treatment that uses only the component of botulinum toxin that stops nerves from moving muscles. So because the muscle can no longer move, wrinkles stop forming.
Specifically, where I get it is first my forehead. Even with Botox, my forehead still moves. It does move, but depending on the amount injected, you can either stop it from moving at all, or let it move somewhat while preventing wrinkles from forming. So if you inject too much, you lose facial expression.
Another area I get it is the glabella—between the eyebrows. That's where vertical frown lines can form. These can form while talking, so I get Botox there to prevent wrinkles from forming.
Another area I recently started getting it is the outer corners of the eyes. When you smile, some wrinkles do form there. But I get it so they don't become too deep—so I can still smile and have some lines form, but not excessive ones. I actually like the smile lines that form when I laugh, so I keep those while eliminating the wrinkles caused by aging with Botox.
Another place I added is here—Botox in the jaw area. There's a muscle called the masseter, and when this muscle bulks up, it can make the jaw look wider, so injecting Botox there makes the face look a bit smaller.
I think beautiful skin comes down to having no discoloration and no wrinkles. As I mentioned, smile lines or wrinkles that form when you make an expression are fine, but if you have unnecessary wrinkles when your face is at rest, it inevitably makes you look older. Also, wrinkles form through daily accumulation—they don't appear overnight, but develop gradually from habitual expressions or dryness, so once they form, treating them becomes quite difficult. If you inject thoughtfully, your expression won't end up looking like an expressionless mask. So while you can still make expressions, unnecessary wrinkles won't form or remain, and I think that contributes to beautiful skin to a certain extent. I'm glad I got Botox myself, and I also wanted to say to those who have a somewhat negative image of Botox that it's not like that at all. I personally quite like Botox and would recommend it to many people.
Next, the fifth thing I found worthwhile for beautiful skin is Thermage. Recently, HIFU has become very popular, and there's a strong image that HIFU is the go-to for sagging skin—of course, I love HIFU too. But the very first treatment I did for sagging was actually Thermage. I started getting Thermage treatments when I turned 30. I get it once a year to once every six months, so I've had close to 20 treatments by now.
What is Thermage exactly? While HIFU lifts the skin, Thermage is more about tightening. By applying RF (radiofrequency) energy, it heats the fat and muscle tissue, causing them to contract. It has an effect of tightening up faces that are full and puffy from excess fat.
When I first started Thermage, my face was round and puffy like Anpanman's, so that's why Thermage was the first treatment I tried—that was my goal with it. It's not like your face gets smaller right away, but the tightening effect gradually helped prevent sagging, and I feel like it tightened up the excess volume while preserving my jawline.
What I like even more about Thermage is that it actually stimulates the sebaceous glands a bit, which helps regulate excess sebum production. After treatment, pores tighten up and acne becomes less likely to form. This is something I really felt was worth the money. Since reducing muscle size with Botox can sometimes lead to sagging, I combine Botox injections with Thermage treatments, so even with Botox, I don't feel like I have much sagging.
To summarize, the five things I really felt were worth spending money on are: dermatological acne treatment, facial hair removal, fractional laser, Botox, and Thermage. These five are what I feel dramatically changed my skin quality, so I hope this is helpful as a reference.
Going forward, I'd like to introduce more things I felt were worth spending money on for anti-aging and skin whitening, so if you enjoyed today's content and would like to see this kind of video again, please leave a comment saying so.
With that, I'll see you in the next video. Goodbye.
