Hello everyone, this is Tomo Dermatology Clinic. Today I'd like to talk about a topic called "The Truly Scary Side of Chapped Hands" — if left untreated, hand roughness can actually lead to some frightening consequences. Many of you may have gotten chapped hands from year-end cleaning, and you might think it's fine to just leave it alone. But actually, there are things to be concerned about if you neglect it, so please watch this video carefully to learn about it and take proper care of your hands.
Let's start with why chapped hands occur in the first place. This is a common everyday issue, but it happens most often to people who do a lot of housework involving water. It's also common among certain professions — hairdressers, doctors like myself, and people in the food service industry — because we wash our hands frequently.
However, even people who don't work in these fields tend to get chapped hands especially during the cold winter months. This is because when it's cold, people tend to wash their hands with hot water rather than cold water. Hot water has a strong effect of stripping away the skin's natural oils, so washing with hot water frequently makes the skin more prone to dryness. Additionally, the dry outside air in winter makes this an especially risky season — not just for those in water-related professions, but for everyone.
If your hands are just a bit dry, you can usually fix that with proper skincare and hand cream. But if you notice the following symptoms, you should be cautious and consider visiting a dermatology clinic.
First, if you develop small blisters or bumps that look like a rash, that's a warning sign.
Second, if your skin cracks open — which sounds painful just to imagine — bacteria can enter through those cracks, so be careful.
Third, if blisters burst and become oozy, and this causes itching, that's another sign to watch for.
And probably the most common issue: if your hands are not just dry but red and itchy, this means inflammation has already set in. At this stage, skincare alone won't be enough — please go to a clinic and get proper medication for treatment.
Actually, treating chapped hands is quite tricky. Since we use our hands constantly, we can't just apply medication and leave it on all the time. Also, the skin on the palms and backs of hands is relatively thick, making it harder for medication to penetrate. And for people whose jobs require water contact, being told to avoid water entirely might mean they'd have to quit their job.
So, at the stage when you just notice slight dryness, don't ignore it — start applying hand cream frequently to keep your hands moisturized. Also, try washing your hands with lukewarm water or cold water instead of hot water. If you do end up washing with hot water because it's cold, make sure to moisturize afterward as a set routine. If you absolutely need to use water for work, wearing rubber gloves to prevent direct contact with water or hot water is ideal.
One of the most concerning things recently discovered is that chapped hands can actually cause allergies. When you think of allergies, you might picture young children developing them, or hay fever, but in fact, chapped hands can lead to allergies too. For example, sushi chefs have developed fish allergies, and bakery workers have developed wheat flour allergies. There are also cases of healthcare workers developing allergies to latex gloves.
Why does this happen? Chapped skin essentially means the skin has wounds or breaks in it. When the same substance — for example, fish for a sushi chef, or flour for a baker — repeatedly comes into contact with these wounds every day, the body's immune system can overreact in its defensive response, and this ends up causing an allergy. It's now understood that even in adulthood, if allergenic substances remain in contact with chronic chapped skin or wounds for extended periods, this can be a cause of allergies. So you can see why it's important not to neglect chapped hands.
While allergies are a personal concern, there's another issue — you could also cause trouble for people around you. This is because chapped hands can lead to food poisoning. For example, if your hands are cracked open or oozy, that means bacteria are proliferating there. If you then cook food, prepare a salad, or make rice balls, that bacteria can transfer to the food, potentially causing food poisoning.
People with wounds often wear gloves while working, but accidents can still happen. Keep in mind that having chapped hands increases the risk of food poisoning compared to normal. If you have any wounds, please wear gloves as a preventive measure. But most importantly, preventing chapped hands in the first place is crucial — both for your own health and for the health of your family and those around you.
If symptoms do appear, please make sure to visit a hospital and get proper medication. If it hasn't reached that stage yet, simply applying hand cream frequently to keep your hands moisturized can make a big difference. If your hands have gotten dry from year-end cleaning this season, please head to a drugstore, get some hand cream, and take good care of your hands.
Today I shared a bit of a scary topic, but chapped hands, while very familiar to us in daily life, can actually lead to some frightening consequences. Let's make sure to apply hand cream frequently to prevent this from happening.
If you found today's content helpful, please give it a thumbs up, and feel free to leave a comment recommending your favorite hand cream. I'll see you in the next video. Goodbye!
