Hello everyone, this is Tomori Ara. Have you started your UV protection routine? As the sunlight gets stronger day by day, I'm sure you're doing UV care, but are you actually blocking that dangerous type of UV? If you're not blocking it, your spots and wrinkles might be increasing dramatically—I want to talk about this scary topic today, so please watch until the end if you're interested. So, right away, what is this scary UV I'm talking about? It's called Long UVA, or Deep UVA—UVA with an even longer wavelength within the UVA range. You might wonder what "long wavelength" means. To begin with, UV consists of UVA and UVB. UVA has a wavelength of about 320-400, which is longer than UVB, so it reaches not just the epidermis but deep into the dermis, causing spots, wrinkles, and sagging. What I always say is that you should protect against not just UVB but UVA as well. For UVB, you can check how much protection you get from the SPF value, but for UVA, the higher the PA rating, the more UVA is blocked, so I always tell people to check the PA rating carefully. UVA with shorter wavelengths, from about 320 to 370-380, can often be blocked, but it has become clear that UVA with longer wavelengths, from about 370 to 400, has quite a harmful effect on the skin. Of the UV that reaches our skin, UVB is said to make up only about 4%, while UVA accounts for about 96%. So UVA is actually penetrating our skin quite a lot. However, since UVA reaches deep into the skin, it doesn't cause redness or a burning sensation. What makes you feel "it's hot today" or "my skin is getting sunburned" in summer is UVB. When UVB hits you, you feel "oh, I'm getting some UV exposure" and think to apply sunscreen, but the UV that's actually pouring down on our skin is mostly UVA, not UVB. This means we can end up with unnoticed sun damage. By the way, among this UVA, it seems that long-wavelength UVA accounts for half of it. Isn't that scary? So if you're not properly blocking this long-wavelength UVA, it's known that spots, wrinkles, and sagging in the skin will actually increase. Up until now, it was said that long-wavelength UVA stimulates melanocytes in the epidermis to increase melanin, and breaks down collagen and elastin in the dermis, causing sagging. But it turns out something even scarier happens. According to research by Fujifilm, UVA around 340nm damages fibroblasts. UVA with a longer wavelength, around 390nm, was found to release a substance called GDF15 when it damages fibroblasts. You might think there's not much difference between wavelengths of 340 and 390, but that slight difference in length actually matters. It was found that longer-wavelength UVA releases 2 to 3 times more GDF15 compared to shorter-wavelength UVA (setting the shorter wavelength's GDF15 output as 1). What is GDF15? It's a factor released from fibroblasts, but even though it's released from the dermis, it affects the epidermis by stimulating melanocytes and instructing them to produce melanin. Isn't that awful? So it's not just that collagen production stops—a factor released from fibroblasts can also give the command to produce melanin. Most whitening products have been able to block things like prostaglandins and IL-6 for a long time, but blocking this GDF15 factor hadn't been possible until now—or rather, Astalift was the first to discover it, so it's scary that other brands can't do this yet. If you're using something with a high SPF value but still somehow get sunburned or develop spots, you might think it's because you're not fully blocking this long-wavelength UVA. This is actually true—filters that block long-wavelength UVA are, in fact, quite difficult to create. But you want to block it thoroughly, right? The two brands I'll talk about today are focused exactly on this. They are Astalift and La Roche-Posay. If you specifically want to block long-wavelength UVA, I truly believe these are the only two brands to consider. First, La Roche-Posay: this brand has long used its own proprietary UV absorbers to block UV. So there are UV absorbers that can only be used by L'Oréal. La Roche-Posay's previous sunscreens also blocked long-wavelength UVA, but they wanted to more thoroughly block the even longer wavelengths from about 380 to 400nm, so this time they've newly formulated two UV absorbers. By properly incorporating L'Oréal's proprietary UV absorbers, as they have done before, they are now blocking long-wavelength UVA around 380-400nm even more thoroughly this time. Also, since this is the manufacturer that originally popularized tone-up sunscreens, it provides tone-up effects, along with ingredients that soften keratin and vitamin C, plus other beneficial skincare ingredients. But the key point is their proprietary UV absorber—something only the L'Oréal group can use. Since La Roche-Posay incorporates this thoroughly, I think it's truly wonderful if you want to block long-wavelength UVA. And then there's Astalift, which is also wonderful. When they investigated why spots still form even when using high-SPF products, they discovered GDF15, which stimulates melanocytes and increases melanin production. So no matter how high the SPF is, if you don't block long-wavelength UVA, you can't prevent spots—they properly identified this. So how does Astalift block this long-wavelength UVA? First, through their formulation—the combination of ingredients and a film technology that ensures the UV absorber spreads evenly. They use technology to make the UV absorber adhere firmly without unevenness, blocking long-wavelength UVA. Additionally, they've included an ingredient that suppresses GDF15. It's an extract from a flower called Ohanasarusuberi (crepe myrtle), and by including this, they suppress GDF15 production, preventing increased melanin production even when hit by long-wavelength UV. Both have tone-up UV products, so I think it comes down to personal preference. Let me try applying La Roche-Posay first. It might look a bit white at first, but it gives this kind of tone-up effect. Now I'll apply Astalift—I'll use the rose version. Looking at them with the naked eye, Astalift seems to have a stronger pink tint. La Roche-Posay seems a bit more white-toned—let me blend this one too. Both provide a solid tone-up effect, so I think the tone-up aspect comes down to preference. As for the texture, La Roche-Posay feels a bit more moisturizing, while Astalift feels less sticky. Astalift focuses on not breaking down, which is also related to how it blocks long-wavelength UVA, so it may be less sticky as a result. La Roche-Posay, being suitable even for people with dry skin, feels more moisturizing in a sense. But compared to their previous version, the stickiness has been reduced, so I think it comes down to personal preference. Still, from a dermatologist's perspective, while beauty ingredients in sunscreens are certainly important, how effectively it blocks UV is really crucial. I'm genuinely happy to see brands that clearly state they block even the invisible long-wavelength UVA. Considering the reality that long-wavelength UV is constantly pouring down on us, even if a product is labeled PA++++, you can't really be sure if it's actually blocking that long-wavelength UV. So I believe these two brands are the ones that properly block it and help prevent photoaging more effectively. If you absolutely don't want to progress photoaging this year and want to block even long-wavelength UV, I think choosing either of these two brands would be a great option. So, what did you think? Even if you think you're protecting against UV, if you're not blocking this long-wavelength UV, you could be getting invisible sun damage that accumulates over time into spots and wrinkles. So UV care is important, but please keep in mind that you should also aim to block long-wavelength UVA specifically. So today, I talked about long-wavelength UVA. On this channel, I talk about topics related to skin and health like this, so please subscribe if you enjoyed this. Also, I do a YouTube Live every Tuesday, and the second half is membership-exclusive, where I talk about things I can only share there. It's just 90 yen a month, so I'd be happy if you'd consider joining the membership too. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
