Hello everyone! This is Tomo Ariarata. Today, I'll be doing a deep dive into a product that many of you have requested I explain, and one I've personally been very excited about since its release: the Obagi C Refine Lotion. This product was released on March 10th, and it created quite a buzz even before launch, starting from the pre-order period, because Obagi was releasing a toner. The Obagi series is known for its pure vitamin C formulations at concentrations of 10%, 5%, and up to 25%. While serums have been available, this is actually the first time a toner has been released in this line. So, who is this Refine Lotion recommended for? Rather than dry or sensitive skin, it's better suited for oily or combination skin types. Specifically, it's good for those who feel their skin has a yellowish dullness, enlarged pores, or a loss of transparency along with increasing spots. Of course, being part of the Obagi series, this product contains pure vitamin C. Let me explain the effects of vitamin C. While vitamin C has antioxidant and whitening properties among others, in skincare, it's best known for its brightening effect. When UV rays hit skin cells, they get damaged, sending a signal to melanocytes (cells that produce melanin pigment). Melanocytes use an amino acid called tyrosine, which is converted by an enzyme called tyrosinase into DOPA, then DOPAquinone, and finally into melanin. This melanin is transferred to the epidermal cells, and when it accumulates, it becomes visible as spots. Vitamin C works by inhibiting this tyrosinase enzyme, preventing melanin from being produced in the first place. This is the first brightening mechanism. The second point is that melanin starts out as a light brown color and gradually darkens into black melanin as it develops. Vitamin C has a "lightening" effect on this black melanin, helping to fade melanin that has already formed. In this way, vitamin C addresses spots from two angles: preventing melanin formation and lightening existing melanin. However, this only applies when vitamin C actually penetrates the skin. Here's the important part: vitamin C's antioxidant properties are both its greatest strength and its weakness. Antioxidant action means acting as a "substitute" to neutralize oxidized substances. If your skin is already oxidized due to UV exposure or sebum oxidation, vitamin C gets used up neutralizing this surface oxidation before it can penetrate the skin. In other words, for people with strong UV exposure or active sebum production, vitamin C may end up being consumed just cleaning up surface oxidation, never reaching where it's truly needed. This is where Obagi C Refine Lotion comes in—a formulation born from Obagi's extensive vitamin C research. First, it contains fullerene, which has even stronger antioxidant properties than vitamin C. Fullerene handles the surface oxidation first, preparing the skin's foundation before vitamin C needs to sacrifice itself. Additionally, Ascophyllum nodosum extract (derived from seaweed) helps vitamin C penetrate the skin more effectively. This reduces the amount of vitamin C consumed on the skin's surface while enhancing its absorption into the skin. As a result, vitamin C can properly penetrate the skin and deliver its full range of benefits: brightening effects, support for collagen production, and improved skin turnover. This is truly a formulation designed to overcome vitamin C's inherent weakness. The texture has a slight thickness, feeling somewhat syrupy when applied, blending into the skin without any stickiness. It can be used by patting it into the skin or as a wipe-off toner—if using the latter, be gentle with the cotton pad rather than rubbing harshly. Generally, you'd use this as a plain toner before applying a vitamin C serum. Since this lotion itself contains both pure vitamin C and vitamin C derivatives, it can be used alone, but combining it with a pure vitamin C serum will likely give you a more noticeable effect. Especially during this season when UV rays intensify, combined with mask-wearing that increases sebum production and dullness (which is essentially oxidation), this Obagi C Refine Lotion is ideal for boosting transparency and maximizing the effectiveness of your vitamin C serum. What did you think? Today I explained Obagi's new toner, which many of you had requested. When you let me know what products you'd like explained, it makes creating videos easier for me, and I also learn a lot in the process. Please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments. And if you haven't subscribed to the channel yet, please do so. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
