Hello everyone, this is Tomori Arada. The rainy season has begun. Have you been feeling sluggish lately? I myself tend to experience physical unwellness during the rainy season, and I think many of you may feel the same way. So today, I'd like to talk about the physical discomfort that occurs during the rainy season—sometimes called "tsuyu-daru" (rainy season fatigue) or "June sickness." I'll explain the causes of feeling unwell during this season and how to deal with them. If you've been feeling unwell, having headaches, or feeling tired since the rainy season started, please watch until the end. First, let's talk about why we feel unwell during the rainy season—it's not just because it's humid or rainy. There are actual physiological reasons behind it. 【Cause 1: Changes in Atmospheric Pressure】 During the rainy season, low pressure systems are common, leading to more rain. Humans are actually quite sensitive to these changes in atmospheric pressure. When the pressure drops, blood vessels in the body tend to dilate. This dilation can lead to headaches—including migraines. Interestingly, it's not the constriction but the dilation of blood vessels that tends to cause pain. When this happens, the sympathetic nervous system works hard to constrict the dilated vessels back. Since the sympathetic nervous system is associated with excitement and an "active mode," overworking it can lead to difficulty sleeping and irritability. In other words, headaches from vascular dilation and the resulting insomnia or irritability from an overactive sympathetic nervous system tend to occur together. 【Cause 2: High Humidity】 High humidity also affects our bodies. When humidity is high, it becomes harder to sweat, which impairs proper sweating function. This can disrupt body temperature regulation, leading to poor health and swelling (edema). This swelling can further contribute to fatigue and headaches. Although it's hard to go outside during the rainy season due to the rain, it's actually important to make an effort to sweat. 【Cause 3: Mold and Mite Growth】 Continuous rain creates a humid environment that mold and mites love. Inhaling these can worsen allergies, and even for those without allergies, it can cause coughing and general malaise. People with existing allergies may find their symptoms worsening, while others may simply feel unexplained fatigue. 【Cause 4: Lack of Sunlight】 Humans produce vitamin D through sun exposure. This vitamin D plays a role in regulating immunity and mood. Staying indoors in dim rooms without sunlight can lead to feelings of gloominess—this isn't just imagination, but an actual bodily response. In fact, seasonal depression is a recognized phenomenon, with people tending to feel more depressed during winter when daylight hours are shorter. It's simply natural for people to feel more negative when there's less sunlight. As you can see, the rainy season combines low atmospheric pressure, high humidity, mold/mite proliferation, and lack of sunlight, all of which contribute to various physical symptoms. The most common symptoms are probably headaches and fatigue, along with sleep disturbances, allergy symptoms like coughing, and a tendency toward low mood. Please don't think "What's wrong with me?" or "Am I the strange one?" This is simply characteristic of the rainy season. Understanding the cause can bring relief to many people, so please first recognize that these are symptoms unique to this season. 【Solution 1: Pain Relievers and Headache Prediction Apps】 For headaches caused by low pressure, since we can't control atmospheric pressure ourselves, I recommend taking pain relievers when the pain is severe. There are apps like "headache checkers" that notify you when pressure is about to drop significantly—I use one myself. When you see a sharp drop coming, taking medication beforehand can be helpful. 【Solution 2: Vitamin D and Dietary Fiber】 As for daily habits, taking vitamin D is recommended. There are studies showing that vitamin D intake can reduce the frequency of migraines. Another surprising finding is the benefit of dietary fiber. Fiber serves as food for gut bacteria, and fermentable fiber (known as luminacoids) in particular is said to increase the diversity of gut bacteria. Consuming these can stabilize the gut environment, which in turn helps regulate the autonomic nervous system and may reduce headaches, according to some reports. Of course, eating fiber won't instantly stop a headache, but consistently consuming fermentable fiber has been shown to help create a body less prone to headaches. I recommend incorporating both vitamin D and fermentable fiber into your daily diet, especially during this season. 【Solution 3: Sleep and Sweating】 Sleep is also extremely important. Lack of sleep can lead to poor circulation and irritability, so getting proper rest is essential. Also, since high humidity makes it hard to sweat and can cause swelling, taking a nice long bath to sweat is recommended. You could also try saunas or going to the gym—the key is to make sure you sweat at least once a day. Promoting sweating helps regulate body temperature, and this practice is also said to help prepare your body for the intense heat of July and August, reducing the risk of heat stroke. It can also help improve swelling and general malaise during the rainy season, so please try to incorporate "one sweat a day" into your routine. 【Solution 4: Humidity Control】 Managing humidity is also important. To prevent mite growth and to make sweating easier, use a dehumidifier to keep humidity levels between 40-60%. While high humidity might seem good for the skin, it can actually cause health issues by preventing proper sweating, so be sure to manage humidity levels properly. Maintaining proper humidity also helps prevent mold and mite growth. During this season, use a futon dryer to thoroughly dry your bedding, clean your room frequently, and keep air conditioner filters clean to prevent mold growth. These factors can be causes of poor health, so if it's difficult to manage on your own, consider hiring a professional. 【Solution 5: Vitamin D Supplementation】 Finally, let's revisit vitamin D, which I mentioned earlier for headache prevention. Reduced sunlight leads to decreased vitamin D production, which can cause mood instability and immune imbalance. While getting vitamin D from food is important, using supplements during this season can also be an effective way to ensure adequate intake. The rainy season comes every year and typically lasts about a month. Just the rain alone can make you feel gloomy, but there are actual scientific reasons behind this, and everyone experiences it similarly. Instead of thinking "something's wrong with just me," understanding the cause can help you find ways to cope. I hope today's video helps you get through this somewhat gloomy period—let's get through it together. How was today's video? If you enjoyed it, please give it a like and consider subscribing to my channel. I'll see you in the next video. Goodbye!
