Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Are you doing okay with the pollen? This year, many people around me are saying their symptoms are worse than expected. In particular, many people around me say they're experiencing skin trouble. Are you all okay? Some people say, "I don't have hay fever, so my skin doesn't get irritated," but unfortunately that's wrong. Actually, there's data showing that even people without hay fever can develop skin problems just from pollen attaching to their skin. So regardless of whether you have hay fever or not, I'll talk about how pollen can cause things like spots, and how to deal with it. So whether you're suffering from hay fever or you don't have hay fever but feel your skin condition is off, please watch until the end.
Some of you might be wondering why your skin gets irritated even though you don't have hay fever. Hay fever occurs when the body's immune cells overreact, causing tears from the eyes, runny nose, and so on—it's an allergic reaction. So does that mean pollen attaching to the skin causes an allergic reaction? Actually, no. The mechanism by which pollen causes skin problems when it attaches to skin is completely different from an allergic reaction.
According to research done by Shiseido, a protein called Cry j 1 found on the outside of cedar pollen activates a component called thrombin when it attaches to the skin. Thrombin is known to normally clot blood and excite cells. When thrombin becomes activated, it's known to be an unpleasant substance that causes barrier function to decline. When barrier function declines, the skin's moisture content also decreases. Since gaps open up as the skin's barrier disappears, moisture keeps escaping from the skin. Inflammation occurs, causing barrier function to decline further—it falls into a spiral. So the mechanism is: pollen attaches, thrombin becomes activated, skin barrier function declines, this causes dryness and leads to chronic inflammation, which triggers skin problems.
Another scary thing is what's called "pollen explosion." On rainy days, symptoms aren't so bad, but many people find that when it's sunny the day after rain, their eyes become extremely itchy—this is due to pollen explosion. Actually, cedar pollen has a property where it bursts when it comes into contact with water, PM2.5, or other stress substances. When it bursts and explodes, while Cry j 1 was on the outside, something called Cry j 2 emerges.
According to research by Fujifilm, when Cry j 2 attaches to skin, it's known to break down a protein called involucrin, which forms the outer layer of skin cells. When this involucrin protein decreases, cells end up with holes in them, causing moisture to escape and barrier function to decline. Even just Cry j 1 attaching is bad enough, but when explosion occurs and Cry j 2 forms, involucrin decreases further, making things even more porous, leading to even more inflammation. Cry j 2 has data showing it doubles melanin production. This means it becomes a cause of spots.
So you might think, why not just wash off the pollen on your face? But as I mentioned earlier, water causes it to explode. So you'd think you can't wash your face, right? That's where I recommend N Organic's Soothing Cleansing Gel. This has oil and a small amount of water in a network state, so the oil first entangles the pollen. Since it becomes a gel film before contact with water, it removes pollen along with makeup. It also contains dipotassium glycyrrhizinate, an anti-inflammatory ingredient, so it suppresses inflammation in the first place.
Also, you'd want to apply a UV layer to protect against pollen, right? But UV products also contain water, which can cause explosion. So the ASTALIFT brand has released a sunscreen that doesn't cause explosion even if pollen attaches. It's formulated with less water, so it's less likely to cause pollen explosion and less likely to produce Cry j 2. Even if Cry j 2 does form, it contains Japanese mulberry root bark extract, which suppresses inflammation and barrier function decline, and also helps prevent dullness and spots.
So during the day, apply sunscreen that doesn't cause pollen explosion, and when washing your face, use a cleanser that doesn't cause pollen explosion. This is the skincare approach you should take during this season—suppressing inflammation while restoring barrier function.
First, dipotassium glycyrrhizinate suppresses skin inflammation. However, inflammation has various triggers, so it can't be suppressed by glycyrrhizinate alone—it needs to be suppressed from other angles too. Another reliable ingredient is tranexamic acid. Along with suppressing inflammation with tranexamic acid and glycyrrhizinate, according to Shiseido's research, they've also found an ingredient that suppresses thrombin activity. It's written as glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine—this refers to glutathione. So when tranexamic acid, glutathione, and glycyrrhizinate are included, it suppresses inflammation while also suppressing thrombin activity. Using these products to strengthen barrier function and suppress inflammation as part of your daily skincare, along with applying an oil film to prevent dryness, should work great.
D Program's items now newly contain an ingredient called xylitol. Xylitol not only regulates barrier function but also increases the skin's moisture content, so it's highly recommended during this season.
Lastly, I'd like to talk about inner care, not just skincare. People with hay fever are said to have a runaway immune system inside their body. What suppresses this is regulatory T cells, commonly known as Tregs. People with high allergic reactions should take inner care that boosts Treg activity. What does this involve? A substance called butyrate, produced by intestinal bacteria. This induces Tregs. To instruct intestinal bacteria to produce butyrate, you need to consume fermentable dietary fiber in a balanced way. For example, it's found in barley, natto, cucumbers, and manuka honey, so I recommend incorporating these into your diet. In terms of specific components, these include resistant dextrin, inulin, and resistant starch. Rather than just one ingredient, it's better to consume a balanced variety. So for example, eating oatmeal, mochi barley, burdock root, onions, bananas, and various other foods would be good.
So, what did you think? Both people with hay fever and those without may experience inflammatory reactions other than allergies, which can potentially cause spots. Please take countermeasures based on what I discussed today. Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye, see you!
