Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori.
Today, I want to specifically teach you how to deal with accidental sunburn. When you get accidentally sunburned, the crucial window is actually 72 hours. So I'll explain in detail what measures you should take, so please watch until the end.
Many of you probably think that melanin is created immediately after sunburn and causes spots, but that's actually not the case. After sunburn, through various processes, melanin only begins to be produced about 3 days later. So if you take proper care even after accidental sunburn, you can reduce the likelihood of getting spots.
Now, what kind of care should you do within this 72-hour window? First and foremost, it's important to understand that when you get sunburned, there are two types of situations: one that you can handle with your own skincare, and one that requires a hospital visit. The treatment differs greatly between the two. I once worked with a medical team at a rock festival called Miyako Island Rock Festival in Okinawa. I thought the most common issue would be heat stroke, but it was actually sunburn causing burns. Everyone at the festival was wearing bikinis or tank tops, getting directly hit by intense ultraviolet rays from Miyako Island. Many people came in with red, swollen skin and blister-like formations, which we treated as burns. So today, I'm talking about sunburn that causes redness and stinging, sometimes with blistering—basically sunburn that equals a burn. If you're in that condition, you must go to a dermatologist for proper treatment. However, what I'm discussing today is different—cases where you might have slight redness or feel a little flushed, but don't have severe stinging and know you were just exposed to UV rays all day. Specifically, what should you do within 72 hours to prevent spots? First, the most important thing is to cool the affected area. As I mentioned, sunburn is the same as a burn. What do you do when you burn yourself? You cool it, right. This has medical significance. Cooling reduces the release of inflammatory and irritating substances into the body. So right after sunburn, or while you're still outside, it's important to cool your face or body as much as possible. Even after coming home, if you realize you've been sunburned, you can pick up ice at a convenience store when buying an iced latte or coffee. You can apply the ice or the cold drink to your face. Be careful though—applying ice directly can cause frostbite, so wrap it in something first. This prevents the inflammation from worsening. One point to note: there are cooling sheets available, but peeling them off can irritate your skin, so it's better to just apply something cold. If I go outside and realize I've gotten sunburned, I buy something cold from a vending machine, wrap it in a handkerchief, and apply it to my face. Cooling your skin directly is very important. Second, moisturize thoroughly. When you're accidentally sunburned, your skin barrier is compromised, making it more prone to dryness. You want to moisturize more than usual, but there's a key point here. You might be tempted to use sheet masks, which is fine if your skin is resilient. However, as I mentioned about cooling sheets potentially irritating skin, sheet masks themselves can be irritating to dry skin. It's important to minimize touching your skin. So for moisturizing, I recommend mist-type products like Curel sprays or similar ones, so you don't need to touch your face. Both contain anti-inflammatory ingredients, which are good for sunburned, inflamed skin. There's also this Curel Veil Creator product. When you spray it, it creates a line coating the skin with ceramides and beauty ingredients, forming a protective barrier over the stratum corneum—like adding another layer of skin. This was previously available from other brands, where you'd apply a special serum first, then use the Veil Creator. It has evolved, and Curel has changed the design. Now you can use this alone without a special serum, and it includes ceramides and beauty benefits with just one spray line. You apply this film to your face. When your skin is inflamed and you don't want to touch it much but want solid moisturizing, this is actually better than sheet masks. You can apparently borrow this through subscription. If you think you might get sunburned, having something like this is convenient. Moisturize, but avoid irritating moisturizing products. Many of you tend to rely only on skincare, but your skin is already inflamed. Using irritating products can worsen inflammation, so wait a bit before adding beauty ingredients. That's why inner care becomes very important—blocking melanin production from within your body. I recommend Vitamin C, astaxanthin, and Vitamin A. Of course, summer vegetables are plentiful this season, and fruits taste great too, so you can get these from food. But relying on supplements during this period is also fine. I personally focus less on preventing sunburn and more on blocking inflammation when it occurs, which is why I take oral sunscreen. Don't underestimate inner care. When accidentally sunburned, do inner care and take action within 72 hours—that's very important.
So, how was that? I use a parasol and sunscreen too, but UV rays come from 360 degrees, so if you spent a long time outside or got accidentally sunburned, I hope you'll reference what I said today.
