Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori (Shin Tomori).
Lately, don't a lot of you feel like your throat is somehow scratchy, or your eyes feel a bit itchy, or your breath smells bad when you wake up in the morning, or maybe you're worried that your intimate area might have a slight odor? Don't a lot of people feel this way?
All of these are caused by dryness of the mucous membranes. If you don't take care of your mucous membranes, it can lead to various issues like bad breath, odor in the intimate area, or a scratchy throat. So today I might talk about something surprising, but please listen carefully.
What I always say about skin is that it's one big layer of skin protecting us from external stimuli. To make it easy to understand the difference between skin and mucous membrane, think of the outside as skin and the inside as mucous membrane. So your mouth is skin up to here, but from the lips inward—inside the mouth, the throat, etc.—it's all mucous membrane. The eyes are also mucous membrane, and so is the intimate area.
When you're young, like skin, it doesn't dry out that much. But as you get older, these mucous membranes start to dry out too. The most obvious sign of mucous membrane dryness that everyone notices is how your throat gets scratchy in winter. For example, if you breathe through your mouth, the throat's mucous membrane dries out, exposing it to external stimuli, which can make you more prone to catching colds. So if you feel mucous membrane dryness, it's usually because your throat dries out in winter, but as you get older and older, no matter how much you brush your teeth or use breath care products, your mouth starts to smell strongly—so-called bad breath.
When people think of bad breath, they imagine an oily middle-aged man, but that's not the case. Even women experience this—when the mouth dries out, meaning saliva decreases and you get dry mouth, periodontal disease bacteria multiply more and more, causing bad breath.
The same goes for the intimate area. Since that area is also mucous membrane, in women, estrogen—the female hormone—peaks in their 20s and 30s, and as the function of producing mucus declines, that area becomes dry. Due to this hormonal balance, dryness occurs in the intimate area as well. As a result, the resident bacteria there can also be affected by this dryness, disrupting the balance and causing stronger odor. So actually, even if you're washing and taking care of yourself properly, dryness as an underlying cause can lead to bad breath or intimate area odor quite often.
So does this not apply to men? Well, I think a lot of people here feel stressed, right? This stress actually is very much related to mucous membrane dryness too. When you're tense, your sympathetic nervous system becomes dominant. When the sympathetic nervous system is dominant, peripheral blood vessels—like those in your fingertips and toes—have reduced blood flow. This can also decrease mucous membrane secretions. If you're constantly tense or stressed, with your sympathetic nervous system constantly dominant, you're always in a state of hyper-tension. So preventing mucous membrane dryness is really important.
Nutrients are important for preventing dryness in the mucous membrane areas. The most important nutrient is vitamin A. You've probably been told that eating carrots helps prevent colds, or to eat pumpkin, or that eating pumpkin keeps you healthy—that's because both carrots and pumpkin contain beta-carotene, which is a type of vitamin A.
There are actually two types of vitamin A. What I often refer to as vitamin A—retinol, which is also used in skincare—is called active vitamin A, and it's found in animal sources like chicken liver and eggs; this is animal-derived vitamin A. This type is absorbed directly as-is. The beta-carotene found in carrots, pumpkin, and green and yellow vegetables in general is called provitamin A, which is converted into vitamin A once it enters the body. Both are fat-soluble vitamins, meaning they dissolve in oil. So if you eat too much, it can accumulate in the liver, and you need to be careful about excess intake—that's why it hasn't really been recommended much as a supplement. But according to Japan's National Health and Nutrition Survey from 2018, the average daily vitamin A intake for Japanese adults is 544μg RAE for men. RAE stands for Retinol Activity Equivalents, so it's abbreviated as 544μg. So on average, men consume about 550, and women consume about 520μg.
However, the recommended daily intake of vitamin A is said to be 800-900μg for men and 650-750μg for women. But here's the thing—Japan's recommended amount is actually about one-third of America's recommended amount. There's even debate about whether Japan's recommended amount itself is too low compared to Western countries. So both women and men should keep in mind that vitamin A intake tends to be insufficient.
As I mentioned earlier, mucous membranes inevitably become drier due to lifestyle habits and aging, so I hadn't really thought about actively taking vitamin A before, but as I started using it in my skincare, I learned more about what vitamin A actually does. Deficiency causes night blindness, which is how it was discovered—people couldn't see at night. Besides night blindness, the mucous membranes of the eyes also dry out, leading to significant dry eye issues, and as I mentioned, mucous membrane dryness in general. Since these effects of vitamin A have long been known, I think it's worth taking vitamin A to properly address dryness at its root.
Now, is any type of vitamin A equally good? Well, besides the amount of vitamin A, there are two things needed for absorbing vitamin A: protein and zinc. Zinc is needed to combine with protein when transporting it into the bloodstream. So it's good to eat a diet with plenty of protein while also taking a supplement that provides both vitamin A and zinc together.
Since there aren't many vitamin A supplements out there, I'd like to introduce the ones I take. One is this: Active Supplement Vitamin A Plus Mineral. I'm actually an ambassador for this product. When I was originally looking for a good vitamin A product, I found this—it's a doctor's supplement supervised by Dr. Fernandez, a South African doctor. Dr. Fernandez is a pioneer in retinol research, known for a retinol technology called Epiron used in skincare, but he also promotes getting nutrients from diet, which is why he's released this Vitamin A Plus series. Among these, this Mineral version contains a good amount of zinc, which I think plays a role in helping absorb vitamin A and properly transport it through the body. You only need one tablet a day, and one capsule contains 450 of vitamin A, so taking just one should cover your daily needs. I take it regularly, and I do feel like dryness has decreased for me.
Another one—this one comes from a completely different angle, and I found it interesting—is called Simpris Sensual Mucous Membrane Care Supplement. It comes in individually wrapped packets like this. What's interesting is that it specializes in mucous membrane care and also contains vitamin A. The vitamin A here is in the form of beta-carotene, which gets converted into vitamin A in the body. Besides that, it also focuses on female hormone-related aspects, particularly for the intimate area, containing Aguaje fruit oil, which I saw for the first time, to help maintain female hormone levels. As estrogen declines, it helps improve dryness-related issues like itchiness in the intimate area. It also contains parsley seed extract and menthol, which help address issues like mouth odor caused by oral dryness. So this one is really focused on dryness. Vitamin A itself is not just for mucous membranes—it's also a very necessary nutrient for skin metabolism and beautiful skin. So one gives you mucous membrane care plus beautiful skin, and the other focuses on mucous membrane care specifically. If you're concerned about dryness in your mouth or intimate area, I encourage you to find a vitamin A supplement that you're comfortable with.
How was that? Vitamin A is really something—I love applying retinol to my skin, but I also take it orally as part of my overall care routine. Of course, there's also the risk of overdose, so it's not simply a matter of taking as much as possible. Please make sure to choose supplements that are properly supervised by doctors and have clearly stated dosage amounts.
Thank you for watching until the end today. If there's something you'd like me to cover, please leave a comment—I'd love to hear from you. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
