Hello everyone! I'm Dr. Yuri Nitta, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today, I'm going to debunk some popular beauty myths, so please watch until the end. There are things people do believing they're good for their skin, but I often think, "That's a shame," "You don't need to do that," or "That doesn't actually work for some people." Today, I'd like to introduce three such myths. --- **Myth #1: Eating soy products regularly for beautiful skin** Many people do this. Soybeans themselves are indeed rich in vitamins and protein, so I'm not saying you should stop eating them. The key point is: don't put too much faith in soy products. Soybeans are packed with protein, minerals, vitamins B1, B2, and E. Japanese people have traditionally obtained high-quality plant-based protein and trace minerals from soy products. Lecithin in soybeans supports skin cell turnover, and saponin acts as a prebiotic—feeding beneficial gut bacteria, improving the intestinal environment, and ultimately boosting skin moisture. In these ways, soy products are genuinely beneficial. However, if you're eating soy products specifically to "supplement female hormones," it may not be working for you. Isoflavones in soybeans are known to have effects similar to estrogen, the female hormone. They are often recommended for relieving menopausal symptoms, easing PMS, and achieving plump, feminine-looking skin. But here's the catch: not everyone's body can activate isoflavones like estrogen. When you eat soybeans, isoflavones are converted to daidzein, which is then metabolized into a compound called equol. When equol is absorbed in the intestines, it produces estrogen-like effects. Research and published papers have shown that equol can help reduce wrinkles and age spots—making it genuinely beneficial for skin. However, due to differences in gut microbiota, it is known that approximately half of Japanese people cannot produce equol. In other words, no matter how much isoflavone you consume, if you lack the gut bacteria needed to convert it into equol, you won't get those benefits. Equol supplements and gut microbiota testing kits are available at menopause clinics and elsewhere—search for "equol" if you're interested. Eating soy for its protein content is perfectly fine, but if your goal is estrogen-like effects from isoflavones, be aware that it may not work for about one in two people. --- **Myth #2: Coix (Job's tears) skincare products remove warts** Coix does indeed have skin-beautifying properties and has long been valued for brightening and improving skin. Its active component is called "Yokuinin." However, this is primarily a preventive effect—Yokuinin cannot reliably treat existing warts. In my clinical experience, I have honestly never seen warts improve from Yokuinin alone. Taking it for prevention or general skin health is fine, but don't expect warts to disappear or fall off from coix alone. In traditional herbal medicine (Kampo), there is a formulation called "Yokuinin-to." This is prescribed specifically for viral warts. Because viral warts are contagious—spreading through open skin to the face, feet, and other areas—Yokuinin-to can sometimes be effective, though it takes considerable time. However, the bumps most people worry about—small warts on the neck and elsewhere—are not viral. They are generally seborrheic keratoses (senile warts), caused by sun exposure. Yokuinin has absolutely no effect on these. Senile warts require physical treatment, such as laser removal or liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy) at a dermatology clinic, though the latter can leave pigmentation. No amount of Yokuinin will make senile warts disappear. --- **Myth #3: Acne can be treated with skincare alone** I've said this many times, but acne cannot be cured by skincare alone. Acne is a legitimate medical condition called acne vulgaris (zaso). Skincare for acne-prone skin is not about treating acne—it's about creating an environment where acne is less likely to form. Acne develops when excess sebum clogs pores and causes inflammation, so skincare should focus on reducing pore inflammation and controlling oil production. Asking "Which skincare product should I use to treat my acne?" is fundamentally the wrong question. Of course, using skincare as a supplement to proper dermatological treatment makes sense, and there is a small chance that mild acne may improve. But if acne covers your entire face, don't try to fix it with skincare alone—please consult a dermatologist. --- **Summary** - Even if you're eating soy for the isoflavone effect, approximately one in two people may not benefit. - Taking coix (Yokuinin) for warts may help with viral warts, but has no effect on sun-induced (senile) warts. - Acne cannot be treated with skincare alone—always consult a dermatologist. Please keep these three points in mind. Thank you so much for watching until the end! If you found this helpful, please give a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
