Hello everyone! Today's video is about blackheads and clogged pores — specifically, things you should NOT do. Did you all see Setooji's video? Seto-san, that's a no-no! I told you before, didn't I? What are you doing?! So today I'd like to go deeper into why blackheads form, how to properly care for them, and why certain methods are absolutely off-limits. Seto-san, please listen carefully!
Please do check out Setooji's video. I'm a huge fan of his, and when I mentioned wanting to meet him, we actually ended up collaborating — about two months ago, I think. At that time, he mentioned being bothered by his pores and talked about using a bamboo skewer to push out his blackheads. I told him he absolutely had to stop doing that.
Seto-san, wanting to look clean and well-groomed, then said: "Since Dr. Tomori told me bamboo skewers are bad, I'm going to buy a water peeling machine and take care of my blackheads that way." There's a lot to comment on here, but first let me explain why you should never push out blackheads with a bamboo skewer or similar tools.
Blackheads actually serve as a barrier against external irritants entering the pores. Next to every pore is a sebaceous gland that produces oil. That oil travels through the pore and coats the skin's surface, completing the skin's barrier function. Blackheads exist in everyone's pores — they're a normal part of this system.
The problem arises when the blackhead enlarges and protrudes from the pore surface. While it's fine to gently exfoliate the surface, forcibly extracting the entire blackhead removes everything that was protecting the pore. In response, the sebaceous gland kicks into overdrive to replenish what was lost, and the blackhead comes right back. So problem number one: forceful removal just triggers more rapid production.
Second, poking with a bamboo skewer causes direct damage to the skin, leading to inflammation and a compromised barrier — creating a vicious cycle that just keeps spinning. So the key message is: don't squeeze or fully extract blackheads. Gently exfoliate the surface instead.
Seto-san remembered my advice, so he decided to try surface exfoliation using a water peeling device he purchased on Amazon. I had never really examined a water peeling device closely before, but watching his video, I noticed something concerning: while his skin did look cleaner, his face became very red. He was using it on his nose but also on his cheeks. When I met Seto-san, I noticed he has fair, sensitive skin that seems prone to irritation from friction.
I had mentioned to him that there are three things you should never do to your skin: UV exposure, dryness, and friction. The device seemed to be causing friction. For the nose, friction-induced pigmentation is less of a concern, but for women who suffer from melasma — especially in the area from under the eyes to the temples — scrubbing that area can worsen melasma and hyperpigmentation. So friction is something I really want people to avoid.
Even without melasma or hyperpigmentation like Seto-san, redness is an SOS signal from your skin — a sign of inflammation. That inflammation can stimulate melanocytes and cause skin damage over time.
I was so curious about this water peeling device that I ordered one myself. It just arrived — I want to test it out. I got it for around 3,000 yen. I bought the same one Seto-san purchased, called an "Underwater Peeling" device.
In clinics, we use devices for pore-cleansing too. The most well-known is "HydraFacial," which applies a chemical solution to soften blackheads before suctioning them out — which is quite effective. This home device, by contrast, uses only water with no chemicals, so I wasn't sure how effective it would be.
It's shaped like a spatula and apparently offers ultrasonic and iontophoresis functions. According to the instructions, you wash your face, wet the skin, and then use the device. It works similarly to an ultrasonic humidifier — using fine vibrations to dislodge surface debris, including protruding blackheads.
The concept itself isn't bad. However, Seto-san was pressing it firmly and gliding it upward, which is what was creating friction. If you simply wet the skin and glide the device gently without pressing down, that should be fine. I would be cautious around the eye area, but using it lightly on the nose should be okay.
As long as you avoid scrubbing motions, and focus mainly on the nose, I honestly think it can help reduce the visibility of pores even in close-up camera shots.
To everyone watching: I understand the urge to squeeze out blackheads, but that is an absolute no. Never do it. If you feel the need to do something, use an oil-based cleanser to soften the sebum, follow up with an enzyme-based facial wash to break down the protein component, and then apply vitamin C to help regulate sebum production.
If you want to use a water peeling device, make sure to avoid friction. The safest approach is to use it gently on areas that are not prone to melasma or pigmentation — ideally the nose — with as little pressure as possible.
And always moisturize afterward! A ceramide-containing product like Curel's Deep Moisture Spray is excellent for replenishing the skin's barrier after exfoliation.
Remember the three things to never do to your skin: sun damage, dryness, and friction. Avoid these three, and your skin will improve.
Blackheads are made of sebum and protein. Use an oil cleanser to soften the sebum, an enzyme wash to break down the protein, gently exfoliate the surface, and then apply water-based moisture and vitamin C to regulate oil production. That is the ideal routine.
Seto-san, that extreme close-up at the beginning of your video was quite surprising! Just so you know — those white protrusions oxidize when exposed to air and turn black, causing the dark pores on your nose. The method I described, as well as the water peeling device used correctly, should help with that. I hope both you, Seto-san, and everyone watching finds this helpful.
That's all for today's video — dedicated to Seto-san and everyone struggling with blackheads. See you next time. Goodbye!
