Hello everyone, this is Tomori Arada. Today, as a dermatologist, I'd like to share three habits I practice to avoid looking older than my age.
Even among people of the same age, some look older while others don't. Do you know what makes the difference? Of course, things like spots and wrinkles matter, but there's actually a bigger factor: the height of your cheekbones. In young people, the cheekbones sit high, creating a heart-shaped fullness in the upper cheek area with a sharp contour below—this gives a youthful appearance. On the other hand, when cheekbones drop and the lower cheek becomes fuller, the face takes on a trapezoidal or square shape, making it look older. That's why I always focus on keeping my cheekbones lifted to avoid an aged appearance.
**Habit 1: Skull Care**
While the height of your cheekbones is partly determined by genetics and bone structure, the main reason cheekbones drop with age is actually skull aging. I've covered this in previous videos about why celebrities' faces appear to get bigger over time, and why noses seem to grow larger with age—both are related to changes in the skull.
Our face is structured with bone as the foundation, with muscle and fat layered on top, and skin covering everything. In other words, bone is the base that supports our entire facial structure. As we age, even if fat and skin volume remain the same, the shrinking of this bony foundation causes everything to sag downward—including the cheekbones.
To put it in numbers, the skull typically weighs about 650g in your 40s, but by your 70s, it can decrease to around 280g—nearly half. That's a significant change. The skull also has hollow spaces around the eyes and nose, and as these expand with age, it can lead to deeper nasolabial folds, thinning of the bone supporting the cheeks (causing sagging), and shrinkage of the jawbone (leading to double chins and marionette lines).
This process begins gradually in your 20s and 30s but accelerates significantly after your 40s. That's why skull care starting in your 40s is crucial for preventing an aged appearance.
The underlying cause is hormonal change during menopause. Estrogen, a female hormone, helps suppress bone resorption—the process by which bone breaks down. As estrogen levels decline with age, this suppression weakens, leading to decreased bone density and skull shrinkage. This can also happen in your 20s and 30s due to irregular periods or nutritional deficiencies from extreme dieting, but after 40, it's a natural change everyone experiences. That's exactly why proactive care during this period matters so much.
As for specific measures: first, incorporate isoflavones and other estrogen-like compounds into your diet—soy products are a great source. Isoflavones from soy are broken down by gut bacteria into a compound called equol, which supports estrogen-like functions in the body. However, not everyone can produce equol naturally, so many supplements are available to compensate for this. I personally take these supplements starting in my 40s, and I also recommend incorporating soy products into your diet.
Another important factor is stimulating the bones directly. Just as walking is recommended to prevent osteoporosis, bones need appropriate stimulation. One way to do this is by chewing thoroughly. While there's some concern that chewing enlarges the masseter muscle (and thus the face), the act of chewing firmly does provide beneficial stimulation to the bone. I chew gum for about 5-10 minutes a day for this purpose.
Vitamin D intake is also essential. The more thoroughly you protect yourself from UV rays, the less vitamin D your body naturally produces, so I supplement with vitamin D as well. To summarize, I consistently take equol-based supplements and vitamin D supplements specifically for bone care. I believe bone care is the foundation for preventing an aged appearance.
**Habit 2: Preventing Blood Sugar Spikes**
Skin yellowing and dullness are also signs of aging. To prevent this, I make sure not to let my blood sugar spike suddenly.
For example, eating just pasta alone, or eating sweet pastries by themselves, causes blood sugar to spike rapidly. When blood sugar spikes, insulin is released to bring it back down, but this rapid rise and fall—known as a "blood sugar spike"—puts significant stress on blood vessels. This vascular stress triggers the production of free radicals to control inflammation. These free radicals don't just damage blood vessels; they also cause oxidative damage to the skin—essentially, "rusting" it. This skin rusting is a major cause of yellowing and dullness.
While I take UV protection measures, I also avoid eating sweets on their own to prevent blood sugar spikes. When I really want something sweet, I pair it with fiber-rich foods to help minimize the spike.
**Habit 3: Avoiding Excessive Weight Loss**
The last habit is not losing too much weight. This is a surprisingly overlooked point.
When you're young, your face has firmness and a taut appearance. This isn't just about high cheekbones—it's also because there's an adequate layer of fat and skin sitting properly on the bone structure. When the face becomes too thin, the skin tends to sag.
On the other hand, rapid weight gain adds heavy fat that can also cause sagging due to its weight. So both excessive weight gain and excessive weight loss are problematic. I personally try to keep my weight fluctuation within about 1-2 kg. Beyond a 2kg change, the face—being particularly sensitive to fat fluctuations—tends to show sagging either way: gaining weight causes sagging from added weight, while losing weight causes sagging from lost volume. Since both bones and skin naturally loosen with age, keeping fat levels stable becomes especially important.
I've been running this channel for over three years now, and if you look at my face over that time, you'll notice there hasn't been much fluctuation in weight. Even though I may have gained some spots or wrinkles, I believe maintaining a stable weight has been a key factor in preventing an aged appearance.
**Summary**
1. Take care of your bones to prevent skull shrinkage
2. Prevent skin oxidation (yellowing) by avoiding blood sugar spikes
3. Keep your weight fluctuation minimal to prevent sagging and volume loss
These are the three habits I practice to avoid looking older than my age. I understand it might be difficult to do all three at once, so please feel free to start with just one that resonates with you.
