Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori (Yuri Tomori). Today, two carbonic acid peeling products that change the concept of peeling have been released from different brands, so I'd like to introduce them today. The era of peeling is changing.
When you hear "peeling," what image comes to mind? I think many people imagine it's for concerns like pores, acne, or oily skin. But actually, even people with dry skin sometimes need peeling.
Human skin works like this: new cells are born from the basal membrane, grow, eventually become the stratum corneum (keratin layer), and then flake off—that's the skin's life cycle. Why does the stratum corneum peel off naturally? Because our body has enzymes that cut the corneum once it becomes a certain thickness—this is called desquamation, and it happens properly under normal conditions.
Actually, for people with dry skin, dryness weakens the function of the enzymes that break down the stratum corneum. This causes the corneum to build up thickly. This is called "multilayer desquamation" (juusou hakuri), where you get patchy areas—some thick, some oddly peeled—creating an uneven corneum layer.
What's problematic is that when the corneum is thick, the cells mistakenly think they don't need to make new cells, so cell turnover slows down. When turnover slows, since moisturizing components like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and intercellular lipids are produced during the turnover process as cells grow, this results in even more dryness. This creates a negative cycle: dryness thickens the corneum, and a thick corneum leads to more dryness.
So people with dry skin also need peeling. It's not about stripping away the thickened corneum, but about bringing it to the right thickness. On the other hand, for acne-prone skin, it's better to thin it out. But for dry skin, thinning it too much isn't good either—it needs to be thinned just the right amount. This balance is difficult, and I think that's been the reality: dry-skinned people haven't been able to find a peeling product suited to them.
Wanting to create a gentle peeling product suitable even for dry skin, rather than the conventional approach, this time they created SOFINA iP's Carbonic Acid Peeling Foam Serum.
SOFINA iP is made by Kao, and when you think of Kao, you think of carbonic acid. This time, they're doing peeling using carbonic acid. When you hear "carbonic acid," you might think of it improving the absorption of lotions and serums, but you might wonder why it's used for peeling. There's a proper reason for this.
Medical peeling agents often use acids like glycolic acid, AHA, or BHA. Lower pH means it leans acidic. Using acids drops the pH sharply. When pH drops, enzymes that cut cells become active, and this is used to activate them to cut a lot. However, acids have a very large molecular weight, so you need to use a high concentration and work hard to get it into the skin. This causes the pH to drop sharply, and because a high concentration is introduced, a lot ends up peeling off—including areas that don't need it—which also causes dryness. When using acids, thorough moisturizing was necessary. Carbonic acid, on the other hand, has a very small molecular weight, so while it drops the pH for a moment, the pH quickly returns to normal. Since the enzymes don't work more than necessary, only the parts that need to be removed get peeled off.
It was already known that using carbonic acid serums could improve acne and had peeling effects, but applying this so that even people with dry skin could safely undergo peeling—that's what SOFINA iP achieved.
But that's not all. They also thought about adding moisture at the same time. This is what this product does—it includes ingredients that moisturize the corneum itself after peeling. It's the Kera TR complex ingredient originally included in SOFINA iP—arginine, proline, succinic acid, glyceryl glucoside, eucalyptus leaf extract, and BG—ingredients designed to maintain moisture in the stratum corneum.
After peeling clears the corneum, water gets drawn in firmly, so after the dullness disappears, you get a moisturized feeling like you've done a hydration pack—it's an interesting formulation.
Actually, this is a wipe-off type. After forming foam, you wipe it off. It's not the wiping motion that removes the dead skin cells—it's the foam ingredients I mentioned earlier that do the work—so after wiping, your skin becomes smooth. You then continue with your regular skincare routine afterward.
If you've used SOFINA iP's previous foam serum, you'll notice this one foams up really well. Normally, foam disappears quickly, but this one stays whipped for a long time. The formula has evolved so that the carbonic acid stays on the skin longer. By adding hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, the foam's elasticity increases and it adheres better to the skin. Since the principle is that carbonic acid penetrates the skin to thin the corneum, if the foam runs off, it's not ideal—so the formula has evolved to make the foam finer and more adhesive.
Some might think wiping it off would cause friction, but since it feels like you're wiping off foam, I don't think there's much friction. When you touch your skin, you can immediately feel how smooth it is. There's no dryness at all, so for those who were scared of peeling because of dry skin, or those who don't like irritation, this product—which moisturizes and hydrates while peeling—really changes the concept of what peeling can be.
However, since the moisturizing effect is quite strong, I'm honestly not sure how well it would work for acne-prone skin. But for those with dry skin who are concerned about dullness and pores, I think this is highly recommended.
Another product using the same carbonic acid peeling concept, released almost as if in coordination, is MEGURI's Double Peel Lotion.
This is a machine that creates carbonic acid serums. By changing the serum's ingredients, you can make versions focused on vitamin C or niacinamide, for example. This time, they've created a serum that uses the power of carbonic acid to deliver peeling ingredients—carbonic acid combined with peeling components.
Carbon dioxide exists in the air, right? Just floating around, it doesn't affect us at all. But when it touches the skin and ionizes, it penetrates. Just being in the air doesn't mean much. So this special device is used to deliver ingredients into the skin along with the ionization process—that's the principle behind MEGURI.
They first add BHA and AHA acids. Since carbonic acid is added together, the acids don't need to be at high concentration, so they can be used in fairly small amounts.
SOFINA iP does peeling by applying carbonic acid foam to the skin, whereas MEGURI does peeling by delivering peeling ingredients together with carbonic acid—so even though both use carbonic acid, they're a bit different.
What I thought would be better for acne-prone skin with this one is that it contains not just AHA but also BHA, an oil-soluble acid. What's good about this is that inside pores, sebum accumulates, and there's also dead skin cells there. Water-soluble AHA doesn't penetrate well into that area, but oil-soluble BHA can remove the dead skin cells inside the pores. But pores are small, right? If you just apply BHA on top, it's hard for it to penetrate deep into the pores. But by delivering it via fine carbonic acid bubbles, the BHA gets firmly into the pores, cleanly peeling away the dead skin cells inside them too.
You might think it sounds like a hassle, but if you buy this one MEGURI device, you can also use it for vitamin C or niacinamide, and this time they've also created this Double Peel lotion.
You can buy just the peeling lotion by itself, but on its own it wouldn't be much different from ordinary peeling. It's precisely because it goes in together with ionizing carbonic acid that it reaches deep into the pores—so you need the device for this to work. I think it's really interesting that a similar carbonic-acid-based peeling product has come out this season.
The difference is clear: SOFINA iP is for people with dry skin who want to remove dullness while moisturizing and peeling at the same time. MEGURI is for people who have been concerned about acne and pores, have tried various peeling products, but are still bothered by enlarged pores.
Even though both are carbonic acid peels, their approach to different skin types is completely different, so I hope you'll choose based on your skin type. I really think carbonic acid holds unknown potential, so if you're interested, please check them out.
So, how was that? Today I introduced two new peeling formulations based on the new concept of carbonic acid peeling. I think these are products that came about precisely because the makers thoroughly pursued the potential of carbonic acid, so if you're interested, please do check them out.
Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
