Hello everyone, this is Tomori Nitta. Today I want to share a new discovery about pores—something we all hate—and introduce an amazing new lotion designed to address it. Pores are truly annoying, aren't they? Of course, no one is without pores; they actually serve a protective function for our skin. However, when pores become clogged or enlarged, our skin can feel rough and makeup doesn't apply smoothly. Until now, pore concerns were mainly about "clogged pores." For people like me with excess sebum, overactive sebaceous glands mix with shed keratin proteins from the stratum corneum, clogging the pores. This is why enzyme cleansers, clay masks, and peeling treatments have been common solutions. But recently, many people notice enlarged pores even without excess sebum production. The actual culprit might be sweat. Don't confuse sweat with sebum—they're similar but different. Sebum comes from sebaceous glands located beside the pores, while sweat comes from a completely different structure called sweat glands. This means even people without active sebum production still sweat. We tend to think of sweat as something that pours out like a waterfall during exercise, but even during everyday activities like desk work or housework, we produce about a cup's worth (roughly 200ml) of sweat. We just don't notice it because it moistens the skin's surface and evaporates continuously. It turns out this sweat can actually harm our skin—through a process called "skin glycation." Glycation occurs when excess sugar in the body binds with proteins to form AGEs (Advanced Glycation End-products). In blood vessels, this causes inflammation leading to arteriosclerosis; in the dermis, it breaks down collagen and elastin causing sagging; in the stratum corneum, it causes a brownish dullness. Remarkably, this same process can happen with sweat. Sweat mainly consists of water along with minerals like sodium and potassium, but it also contains an antimicrobial peptide (a protein) and glucose (a sugar). Normally, sweat benefits the skin, but under high temperatures or UV exposure, the antimicrobial peptide denatures and binds with glucose, triggering glycation and forming AGEs. Once these AGEs form, they cause abnormal keratinization at the pore openings, thickening the stratum corneum and making pores appear enlarged or saggy. In the dermis, collagen fibers around the pores break down, causing pores to become both enlarged and droopy—creating what's known as "crater-like pores," even without clogging from sebum. With crater-like pores, foundation tends to settle into them and look patchy, making the pores even more noticeable. This glycated sweat has also been found to activate a gene called KRT16, which is associated with abnormal keratinization. KRT16 is also linked to conditions like dryness and atopic dermatitis. When activated, it thickens the stratum corneum, preventing normal shedding. This thickened skin around pores can make them look clogged or give the skin a rough texture. Furthermore, glycated sweat has been shown to increase TNF-α, a factor that breaks down collagen in the dermis. Increased TNF-α destroys the collagen supporting the pores, causing them to stretch and enlarge even further. The combination of thickened stratum corneum (creating crater-like appearance) and collagen breakdown in the dermis (causing sagging) makes saggy, crater-like pores even more prominent. What's more concerning is that AGEs also cause skin dullness. Beyond enlarged pores, they can create a grayish or yellowish, dull complexion—contributing not just to spots and wrinkles, but an overall darker, aged appearance. In your 30s and 40s, pores naturally tend to become more enlarged due to age-related decreases in collagen and elastin. On top of this, glycated sweat can penetrate deeper into already-enlarged pores, further increasing TNF-α in the dermis and accelerating saggy pores. Even if you think "I don't sweat much, so I should be fine," we're currently in an environment where this glycated sweat is especially likely to occur. Beyond just sweating, glycation is triggered by UV exposure and rising temperatures. Not only does UV exposure increase in the coming season, but wearing masks has been shown to raise facial skin temperature by about 1 to 1.5 degrees. This means the facial surface, which normally doesn't get very hot, becomes heated, and when combined with UV exposure, any sweat produced is more likely to undergo glycation. If you've noticed your skin looking dull or your pores becoming saggy since you started wearing masks regularly, this glycated sweat may very well be the cause. So what can be done? It was actually POLA that discovered this phenomenon of glycated sweat. And POLA didn't stop at discovery—they identified ingredients that prevent sweat from glycating, and ingredients that block the negative effects on pores even if glycation does occur. The first is a complex called "Himalayan Saxifrage x AGE Complex," containing water, BG, and Bergenia ligulata root extract. This works to prevent AGE formation even when sweat is exposed to UV rays or high temperatures. The second is "Momordica Charantia Fruit Extract," which suppresses the TNF-α increase in the dermis caused by AGEs from glycated sweat—protecting collagen and elastin from breakdown. Together, these two ingredients address both sides of the problem: preventing sweat from glycating in the first place, and blocking the damage to the dermis if glycation does occur. But POLA didn't stop there—they also focused on the fact that pores themselves have a shape that resists penetration. The pore surface is tightly closed, making it difficult for lotions and emulsions to penetrate. Additionally, pores contain sebaceous glands producing oil, and since water and oil don't mix easily, this further hinders penetration. While a light, watery lotion is ideal for pore care, lotions are water-based and have high surface tension, making it difficult to penetrate into pores. To solve this, POLA researched how to reduce surface tension while maintaining a pleasant, slightly viscous texture, formulating ingredients at the optimal particle size. They also incorporated POLA's proprietary ingredient—a combination of polyoxyethylene and polyoxypropylene—which has high affinity with oil, allowing it to penetrate effectively even into tiny pores. Based on this research, POLA created the "B.A Lotion Immerse." The bottle has a distinctive curved shape—which I like to imagine represents a pore (though I could be wrong!). The texture is watery and slightly runny, looking almost like plain water. But when applied to the skin, it leaves a film-like, moisturizing sensation. Despite having some viscosity, it doesn't feel sticky at all—instead, the skin feels instantly softer. This immediate softening effect really showcases POLA's penetration technology. Truly impressive for a B.A product. Pores are a concern at any age, but they're especially prone to enlarging in your 30s and 40s. Combined with UV exposure and mask-related heat causing sweat glycation, saggy and dull pores become more likely during this stage of life. If you're noticing enlarged pores without excessive oiliness, or a dull complexion, glycated sweat might be the hidden cause. I highly recommend trying products like this to address it. What did you think? Glycation doesn't just cause inflammation in the body—it also causes skin inflammation and pore enlargement. This discovery is truly remarkable. And beyond just discovering the mechanism, developing a cosmetic product to address it really shows how amazing Japanese researchers are—I was reminded of that once again today. On this channel, I explain beauty and health topics like this in an easy-to-understand way, so please subscribe if you enjoyed this video. See you in the next one. Goodbye!
