Hello everyone. I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist.
Today I'll talk about pores, which are a serious concern for many of you, and share 5 things you absolutely should not do. Please watch until the end.
Pores—I really hate them too. Especially recently with everyone wearing masks. When you wear a mask, your skin tends to get humid, and sebum secretion becomes excessive. So not only people who originally have oily skin, but also people with combination skin or even those leaning toward dry skin, tend to have this concern about pores becoming noticeable.
So today I'll talk about 5 things you should not do for pore care.
Right away, number 1 is "excessive moisturizing."
Often, even for people with open pores, beauty magazines and SNS say that if you moisturize thoroughly and improve skin texture, pores will become less noticeable. But I think everyone is a bit misunderstanding this.
One of the causes of visibly open pores is excess sebum, and the plug that forms when this excess sebum mixes with skin protein—called a "sebum plug" (kakusen)—is present in everyone, even people whose pores aren't noticeable at all. But when sebum secretion becomes excessive, or dirt adheres to it, the pores appear open.
So the sebum plug itself isn't evil, but when excess sebum and dirt are added to it, problems arise. Of course, moisturizing to make pores less noticeable and to improve skin texture is good, but if this moisturizing isn't done with water but with oil-based creams or lotions, then in areas where sebum secretion is already excessive, adding more oil-based products on top causes the pores to open even more.
So for people concerned about pores, especially those with high sebum secretion, when moisturizing, you should add water but avoid moisturizing methods that create an oily film by adding oil. This is the same for people with acne, by the way.
So when moisturizing, please use something that thoroughly adds water without much oil content for hydration. For areas other than where pores are a concern, you can seal them with lotion or cream. So if you're concerned about pores, let's stop excessive moisturizing for a while.
Number 2: "squeezing out pores."
A lot of people do this, and since squeezing makes the plug pop out with a squishy sound, it does feel satisfying, but this is also something you absolutely should not do. This has been said repeatedly on social media too, but let me explain the reasoning behind why you shouldn't do it.
As I mentioned earlier, everyone has these plugs in their pores, even people whose pores aren't noticeable. The reason these plugs exist is that they act as a kind of block to prevent foreign substances or external stimuli from entering the pore. However, when sebum or dirt sticks to this plug and hardens as I mentioned, it comes to the surface and appears as clogged pores.
So it's fine to shave off the surface, but if you squeeze out what's inside the pore, it comes out with a squishing sound. Then in that hole, the skin thinks, "Oh no, the plug is gone, there's nothing protecting it anymore, I need to make a lot more plug material to protect it!" So it makes more.
So while shaving off the surface is a very good thing, if you remove the deeper part, the skin's function will kick in to quickly create a plug to protect the inside of the pore. That's why, rather than squeezing out the plug and popping it out with a squishing sound to eliminate it, it's better to do something like shave off the top layer—for example, using enzyme cleansers, clay packs, or clay cleansing to shave off the slightly protruding plug on the surface. But squeezing pores hard to push things out, or even using tweezers to remove things, won't remove everything anyway.
For example, if you do pore care and notice a slightly noticeable pore here and there, it's fine to gently clean just the top part with tweezers, but please don't go deep and try to remove the entire plug. The more you do this, the more plugs will form.
Number 3 is "lack of exercise."
What, this has nothing to do with skincare, you might think, but there's some pretty interesting data. There's a POLA brand called APEX, and they have analysis data showing that people who exercise have less noticeable pores.
This is data from a survey of a total of 260,000 people conducted over almost one year, from 2019 to 2020. That's quite a lot—260,000 cases. Among those, when they examined the skin of people who said they lacked exercise versus those who said they exercised regularly, they found that people who lacked exercise had more clogged pores and more sagging pores due to aging compared to those who exercised.
There are various ways to think about this, but exercising tends to reduce stress. Many people might think stress isn't really related to skin, but when you're under stress, stress hormones are secreted. When these stress hormones are secreted excessively, they actually stimulate the sebaceous glands, causing excessive sebum secretion. This causes pores to open.
Also, lack of exercise can raise blood sugar levels, which can accelerate skin aging, and lack of exercise leading to weight gain means the body tends toward obesity, which increases inflammation in the body. This may contribute to the progression of sagging pores.
Of course, I don't mean you need to be super strict and go to the gym, run several kilometers a day, and lift dumbbells—about 30 to 40 minutes of walking per day is fine. Please keep in mind that moving your body a bit is important for pore care.
Number 4 is "eating too fast."
Again you might think this has nothing to do with skincare, but please be careful because eating fast will definitely cause your pores to open up.
This is because eating fast means eating your meal all at once, which causes blood sugar to spike rapidly. As I showed in a previous video, this rise in blood sugar causes something called skin glycation. This skin glycation cuts collagen and elastin fibers, which leads to the progression of sagging pores.
This is also related to lack of exercise—if you eat fast and don't exercise, glycation in your body will definitely progress. Also, eating fast means you eat a lot before you feel full, so you end up eating not just carbohydrates but also fats, and this excess weight can also make sebum secretion more active. So if you're doing pore care, it's better to try to avoid eating too fast.
And finally, number 5 is "looking at your skin with a magnifying mirror."
You might wonder what this means, but do you think there's anyone without pores? There absolutely isn't. No matter how much you think someone has "poreless" skin, if you look closely up close like this, any idol, any model, anyone with beautiful skin definitely has pores. There's no human being without pores.
But people usually look at each other from about this distance, right? You don't usually look this close. Even with someone this close, like a romantic partner, you'd usually have your eyes closed at that moment. So typically, it's more like arm's length distance, and even that feels a bit close. The question is whether pores are really that noticeable when viewed from that kind of distance.
If you look with a magnifying mirror like this, anyone will have visible pores, and you'll end up obsessing over them. Of course, looking in a mirror to observe your skin is recommended, but if you focus on this one thing—pores—and look at them with a magnifying mirror, you'll always feel like you want to eliminate them. But pores don't disappear. They can become less noticeable, but they never completely disappear.
So if you keep looking with a magnifying mirror, you'll end up doing a lot of pore care that won't make them disappear anyway—like unnecessarily scrubbing your face hard. This scrubbing causes inflammation, which then leads to excessive sebum secretion, and you end up doing unnecessary things. Of course, wanting to squeeze them out when you see them with a magnifying mirror is human nature. So if you're doing pore care, I think it's best to completely eliminate the habit of looking with a magnifying mirror.
To summarize: for pores clogged due to excessive sebum secretion, don't over-moisturize—add water as much as possible but avoid oil-based products. Second, don't squeeze them out. If you squeeze them out, the skin thinks the plug protecting the pore is gone and produces even more sebum to make a new plug, so don't squeeze. Also, don't lack exercise, don't eat too fast, and stop the habit of looking with a magnifying mirror.
Pores will never completely disappear—the key point is to make them less noticeable. And how noticeable they are depends a lot on viewing distance, so maintaining proper lifestyle habits, skincare, and keeping your mental state balanced is highly recommended.
Also, if you really want to become poreless, it's very important to try to control sebum and use things like vitamin C serums that boost collagen production.
