Hello everyone, this is Tomori Ara.
Today, as shown in the thumbnail, I want to talk about why I absolutely cannot tell you which cosmetic product works best.
I get asked all the time, like "Doctor, which one works best?" but I really can't say. I struggled a lot with whether to talk about this, but today I want to share the reason, so please watch until the end.
Are you ready? I'm a bit nervous. You might think that saying this means I'm not allowed to, or that cosmetic companies have told me not to, but there's a reason - the main reason is that I simply don't know.
What's wrong, am I being honest? Tomori Ara.
People often say things like "this is the best" or "this is absolutely certain," but the truth is, no one really knows how effective any given cosmetic product actually is.
There are plenty of people who say things like "this ingredient is in it, so it does this and that." Some people just talk about the necessary ingredients. But I've also talked about how penetration ability - how much of the ingredient actually gets delivered - matters too.
So you might think, if we know the ingredients and the penetration technology, then we should be able to tell, right? I think so too. But actually, that alone isn't enough to say a cosmetic product is good.
First, even if the same ingredients are blended at the same concentration, how they're mixed, at what temperature, whether mixed quickly or slowly - if you have A, B, and C, whether you add them in order ABC or ACB - there are many different methods, and the effectiveness actually changes depending on this.
Even if you look at the ingredient list on the back of a product and understand the ingredients, and know the penetration technology is solid, and try to recreate the same recipe - there are still reasons you can't replicate it. Which order of addition results in higher penetration is something you can't know without actually comparing. So there's no way to know. I don't think even the manufacturers have tested every pattern to find what's best for the skin. So I think even they don't know.
There's also the stability of ingredients. For example, Vitamin C has effects, but cosmetics get distributed to various places. They don't come directly to us right after being made - they might be shaken on a ship, or flown on a plane. Then when placed on shelves, they might be turned upside down, or shaken vigorously - there are various conditions. If it's an unstable ingredient, it might test as highly effective in the lab, but by the time it reaches us, the effectiveness may have diminished. Whether an ingredient has good stability can be somewhat determined by its name, but true stability can only be known through actual testing. So there's stability, manufacturing method, ingredient concentration, penetration - many factors involved.
There's also the order in which you use cosmetics. Some people use serum after toner, others layer serums. This results in different penetration patterns. So manufacturers design products assuming "if used this way, it will be most effective," but whether people actually use it that way is also unknown. So I can't say "this one has better ingredients, so it's better."
That's why I often make catchy thumbnails like "which one is better?" but if you listen carefully, I never actually say which one is better. Some of you may have noticed this. What I don't say is "A is definitely better than B" - I can only say things like "for this skin type, this might work." Even the manufacturer absolutely cannot know for certain.
When choosing cosmetics, I think people choose based on understanding the ingredients, concentration, and penetration technology - but since there are tens of thousands of possible recipe combinations, you simply cannot know what's optimal. Even if you ask me "tell me which is best," I don't know either. You only find out if it's good or bad after actually using it. If someone is truly a professional, I don't think they could ever rank products as better or worse.
Lately, I've noticed on social media that many people rank cosmetics and sell them that way, but that's purely subjective to that person. I wonder how it applies to me, and I think you shouldn't blindly believe it as-is. There's no evidence behind it, and since you can't truly compare, I don't think you should trust it. I basically never do rankings - in fact, I absolutely refuse to. If it's my own personal ranking, that's fine, but I can never say "this is definitely the case." When comparing the pros and cons of cosmetics, I might be able to say "for this skin type, this one might be better," but I want people to absolutely stop doing those kinds of rankings. And if you see someone doing rankings, I think it's better to assume that person doesn't really understand cosmetics.
I think it's almost like saying "people who do rankings don't understand cosmetics" - that's basically what I'm saying about myself too. If you've truly developed cosmetics and understand everything involved, you'd realize how impossible it is to create rankings, and that there's no evidence behind them. Precisely because there's so much information out there, I don't want people to just believe it blindly - I wanted you to know this.
The reason I can't tell you which is best is because I simply don't know - I have no way to compare them. So how should you choose? Consider how well it addresses your specific concerns, the texture, and if you find the research truly impressive, buying it to support that research helps it get further refined and improved. I think it's better to decide based on what you can judge within your own capacity, rather than being swayed by rankings.
That said, I do think reviews can be quite helpful. Lately in reviews, many people properly write things like "my skin type is like this" before sharing their experience. I think that adds credibility. Rather than trusting "this is good" from someone whose skin type you don't know, it's better to choose based on people similar to you in age or skin type. Review-based rankings and rankings someone just made up on their own are completely different things - not all rankings are bad.
That's right, products that sell a lot aren't necessarily bad. They're not bad at all. But I think it's worth checking what kind of person is writing the review. However, rankings based purely on ingredients that someone just made up on their own - I can't trust those. Which cosmetic is truly the most effective is something we can never really know, so I think it's better not to worry about it too much.
This might have been a somewhat bold video, but when I first started YouTube, I wondered how I could help everyone understand the value of cosmetics. I thought the easiest way to understand was through ingredients - once you understand the ingredients, then talking about research technology and penetration. I felt that without covering that, people might not be interested, so that's what I've been focusing on all along. But I really wanted to properly convey that cosmetics aren't just about ingredients, and aren't just about concentration - that's why I wanted to share this today.
Ingredients and concentration have been overly emphasized, leading to an increase in strange messaging out there, so today's video was also meant to raise awareness about that. I hope this helps you think about your own criteria for choosing products.
Today's content was a bit bold, but this channel shares accurate information about beauty and health, so please subscribe. Also, every Tuesday I do membership-exclusive live streams. I go in-depth on cosmetics and answer questions there, so for just 90 yen a month, I'd be happy if you joined the membership too.
Thank you for watching until the end today. Thank you too, Nomori-kun.
