Hello everyone. I'm Chia, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today I'd like to talk about affordable emulsions, which many of you have been requesting. Proper moisturizing and creating a protective barrier on the skin is really important. One question I often get is: 'Doctor, should I use both an emulsion and a cream?' Honestly speaking, if your skincare products already have a good amount of oil content, you don't necessarily need to layer both. If your skin is severely dry and an emulsion alone isn't enough, then adding a cream is a good idea. Today I'll be introducing affordable emulsions suitable for dry and sensitive skin, as well as one with whitening benefits, so please watch until the end. Let's get started. First up is my top recommendation: the Kikumasamune Sake Skin Care Emulsion — a sake-based emulsion. As the name suggests, it's made by Kikumasamune Sake Brewing Co., Ltd., a company that actually makes sake. Isn't that amazing? What makes it so great is that sake is made from rice, so it's formulated with rice fermentation extract as its base. This rice fermentation extract itself boosts the skin's moisture retention. On top of that, it contains ceramides — the natural moisturizing factors that tend to decrease in people with sensitive or dry skin. Many budget ceramide products use pseudo-ceramides, which have weaker moisturizing properties, but this one actually contains human-identical ceramides. Because they closely resemble the ceramides naturally found in human skin, even a small amount provides excellent moisture retention. And I believe it costs less than 2,000 yen — it's remarkable that a budget product like this contains human-identical ceramides. It also contains amino acids, which are naturally occurring moisturizing components in the skin. Since amino acid levels decrease over time and contribute to a weakened skin barrier, it's important to replenish them from the outside. This product contains glutamic acid, arginine, leucine, and glycine, making it a great option for those who've recently been noticing increased dryness. The base ingredients are water, glycerin, and mineral oil. Because it's oil-based, it provides excellent moisture, making it suitable for use all over the body. One thing to note: since it's made by a sake company, it does contain a small amount of ethanol, so those with ethanol sensitivity may want to avoid it. That said, it comes in a large volume and can be used all over the body, not just on the face. Next is the Mukuna Emulsion (Moist Type). This is actually an original cosmetic product from Tokyu Hands, which had been getting a lot of buzz on YouTube, so I ordered it to try. I had no idea Tokyu Hands made cosmetics, and I was genuinely surprised when I looked at the ingredients. I believe it's around 1,000 yen, yet it contains three types of human-identical ceramides — remarkable for the price. It also contains hyaluronic acid sodium (a higher molecular weight hyaluronic acid) and hydrolyzed collagen, which has a smaller molecular weight and can penetrate deeper into the stratum corneum. So this emulsion is packed with all three major moisturizing powerhouses: ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and collagen. It also contains water-soluble proteoglycan, which has strong moisturizing properties and is believed by some research to function similarly to skin growth factors, potentially stimulating the proliferation of skin cells. So this emulsion not only provides thorough moisture but may also help draw out the skin's natural hydration. It's made with water, glycerin, and squalane, giving it a slightly different texture from the first product. It is also alcohol-free and free of synthetic colorants, making it a safer choice for those with sensitive skin who want extra peace of mind. Finally, here is the Hada Labo Medicated Whitening Emulsion C. Unlike the previous two, which were primarily focused on moisturizing, this one also offers whitening benefits. It contains tranexamic acid, which helps suppress inflammation caused by UV exposure, as well as a vitamin C derivative — making it a whitening emulsion ideal for sun-exposed seasons. So rather than a moisturizing-first product, this is the one to reach for when brightening is your priority. That said, it's not lacking in moisture either. It contains hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, a low-molecular-weight form that can penetrate deep into the stratum corneum for thorough hydration. It also contains nettle oil, an unsaturated fatty acid that is less likely to clog pores, making it suitable for those prone to breakouts who still want to use an emulsion. The vitamin C derivative also helps combat acne inflammation. So if you're concerned about breakouts, want to brighten your skin, and still want to moisturize — this is the emulsion for you. To summarize: if you have sensitive skin or want to focus primarily on moisturizing, I'd recommend either the Kikumasamune Skin Care Emulsion or the Mukuna Emulsion. Both offer excellent moisturizing performance, so choose based on your preferred texture and scent. The Hada Labo option has a slightly lighter texture than the other two and is better suited for those who are prone to breakouts or are particularly concerned about UV exposure. So, what did you think? Even among budget products, there are many with truly impressive ingredients — whether for moisturizing or brightening. Choosing your skincare based on ingredients is definitely a worthwhile approach.
