Hello everyone, this is Tomori Ara. The season when colds and infectious diseases become a concern is approaching, isn't it? Many of you are probably thinking about boosting your immunity as a preventive measure. But did you know that boosting your immunity too much might actually accelerate aging? Today, I'll explain about aging and immunity incorporating the latest findings, so if you want to prevent infectious diseases but of course also want to prevent aging, please watch until the end. First of all, everyone uses the term "immune power," but this isn't actually a medical term. Let me first briefly explain what "immunity" is. Medically speaking, immunity is a biological defense system that detects and eliminates foreign substances entering the body—such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites—to protect the body. The immunity referred to here involves immune cells doing various jobs. For example, when immune cells find a pathogen, they secrete inflammatory cytokines, essentially signaling "there's a pathogen here!" This triggers commands like "gather immune cells," causing immune cells to gather and attack or eliminate the pathogen. However, after that, immune-suppressing cells that control these immune cells always appear. These immune-suppressing cells suppress inflammation and secrete anti-inflammatory cytokines, essentially signaling "the inflammation is over," which brings the whole immune response to a close. This is the flow of the immune response. Immunity involves immune cells that promote inflammation to attack pathogens, and immune-suppressing cells that bring this process to an end. So when people say "boost immunity," they often mean increasing the power to eliminate pathogens. But what do you think happens if you keep trying to blindly boost immunity? Since you're only increasing the attacking power of cells, you end up in a state of constant inflammatory response—inflammation that doesn't stop. So while the inflammation-promoting cells become strong, the immune-suppressing cells become weakened. In fact, it's said that modern people have strong immune cells but weak immune-suppressing cells. This means many people are experiencing chronic inflammation in their bodies without even realizing it. Let's review aging once more here. I believe I've talked about aging quite a bit on this channel, but there are actually two types of aging. One is physiological aging that inevitably progresses with age. The other is aging caused by chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is the cause of pathological aging. For example, on the face, it causes spots, wrinkles, and sagging. As for the body, as shown in the diagram, chronic inflammation is known to cause various diseases including cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, allergic diseases, and hay fever. Continuing in a state where the body leans toward inflammation equals accelerated aging—which is quite scary. So what should you do? You should activate anti-inflammatory immune cells. However, this is quite difficult. I mentioned that modern people have something wrong with their immune-suppressing cells. Why is that? While there are various immune cells that fight pathogens, the only regulatory cells are called Tregs (regulatory T cells). There are many cells that attack, but not many that suppress. However, I'm definitely not saying "don't boost your immunity." What's important is the balance between immune cells and immune-suppressing cells. To use a car analogy, immune cells are like the accelerator, and immune-suppressing cells are like the brakes. Having both the accelerator and brakes work in balance allows you to reach your destination safely and quickly. But if the accelerator is weak, you can't kill pathogens, and if the brakes are weak, you'll run out of control leading to accidents—in the body, this manifests as chronic inflammation. The term "immune power" carries a nuance of "need to energize" or "need to boost," which seems to cause misunderstanding among people. I think if we used a term like "immune balance power" instead of "immune power," people's image of it would change. To put it simply: if immune-suppressing cells are weak, immunity becomes excessive, leading to chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation leads to pathological aging in the body. Conversely, if immune cells are weak, immune-suppressing cells become excessive, making you not only more susceptible to infectious diseases but also unable to attack cancer cells effectively. It's known that people with cancer cells also have many of these immune-suppressing cells. There's also a mechanism where immune cells eliminate cancer cells as they arise, so balance is truly necessary—having too much of either side isn't good. So how can we properly maintain this balance? It turns out that gut bacteria are involved. Gut bacteria include both bacteria that promote immunity and bacteria that suppress immunity. As shown in this diagram, there are bacteria that promote inflammation and bacteria that suppress inflammation, and just like with immunity, the balance between inflammatory and anti-inflammatory bacteria is important. You might think, "why not just take bacteria that suppress inflammation?" Unfortunately, our gut bacteria are said to become established around age 3 and are mostly fixed by around age 15, so no matter how much bacteria you introduce afterward, they don't tend to take hold. So the key point is to have the inflammation-suppressing bacteria produce plenty of short-chain fatty acids. What's needed for them to produce short-chain fatty acids is intake of fermentable dietary fiber, so-called luminacoids. Bacteria that suppress inflammation produce short-chain fatty acids by consuming luminacoids. Among these, butyric acid is what helps regulate immune balance. Of course, this doesn't suppress the bacteria that promote inflammation, so after eliminating pathogens, not causing excessive inflammation in the body beyond what's necessary means preventing the progression of aging. There are many different types of luminacoids. Some ferment easily while others ferment slowly, and the amount of short-chain fatty acids produced also varies. So it's said that relying on just one type isn't very good. It's known that taking various types of fermentable dietary fiber, or luminacoids, in a balanced way is important. There are so many types of luminacoids, but the average Japanese person's typical dietary fiber intake is said to be less than 20g. So if you aim to take various types of luminacoids, ideally 25g or more per day, you can prevent both aging and infectious diseases. To summarize: simply boosting immunity isn't enough—balance is what matters. Modern people have an imbalance that makes their bodies prone to inflammation alone. By taking various types of fermentable dietary fiber (luminacoids) in a balanced way without bias, gut bacteria produce Tregs that suppress inflammation, which balances immunity and helps suppress chronic inflammation. So if you want to prevent both aging and infectious diseases, please actively consume luminacoids. So, how was it?
