Hello everyone, this is Tomori Nitta.
Today I want to talk about how the yellowing of your skin might actually be caused by lack of sleep.
Some of you might be doing whitening care but still find that your skin looks kind of yellow lately, or you might be doing glycation care for dullness—thinking "yellow dullness is all about glycation"—but your skin still looks yellow. Does that sound familiar?
During my New Year's break, for example, since I didn't have work, I ended up sleep-deprived from things like watching the Kohaku Uta Gassen (New Year's Eve music show), or when I couldn't get through my research or housework, my sleep time would get shorter. The next day, my skin would definitely lack that clear, radiant look. I used to think that was just because continued lack of sleep was lowering my skin's moisture level. So I thought, "If I'm sleep-deprived, I'll just use a sheet mask or a cream pack the next day to add moisture to the stratum corneum, and that should brighten up my skin"—that kind of countermeasure seemed fine to me.
But over the years, even when I used a sheet mask the day after being sleep-deprived, my skin somehow wouldn't brighten up the way I expected. I thought maybe this was just increasing dryness, but this time I found out that's actually not the case.
So what is it really? When we think of "yellow," we tend to immediately think of glycation, but it turns out there's something else connected to this yellow tinge in the skin. It's a pigment called bilirubin, which is one of the components involved in making red blood cells.
When I hear "bilirubin," I somehow think of it as a component of red blood cells that rises when liver function is impaired. I had the image that people with liver disease tend to have slightly yellowish skin and yellowing of the whites of their eyes. That's what I learned from an internal medicine perspective—that bilirubin is mainly relevant to people with poor liver function, and doesn't really matter much for healthy people.
But this time, it turns out that bilirubin can actually increase or decrease in the skin itself.
What kind of experiment showed this? There was a sleep deprivation study where they had a person go completely without sleep for one full day. When they examined that person's skin after 24 hours of no sleep, bilirubin levels had risen significantly. So sleep deprivation increases the amount of bilirubin in the skin—and even though it was just one day without sleep, the increase continued for as long as five days. Isn't that a bit scary? And it turns out that when this continues, it becomes a cause of yellow dullness.
Some of you might think, "Going a full day without sleep is pretty rare, so this doesn't really apply to me." But here's another scary part: it's also been found that chronically sleeping around four hours a night increases bilirubin levels in the skin.
Even if you're not quite down to four hours, I think there are quite a lot of people who sleep around four to five hours. For example, I do a YouTube livestream every Wednesday, and it usually ends around 11:30 PM. After cleaning up, washing my face, taking a bath, and so on, I end up going to bed sometime after midnight, maybe around 1 AM. But the next day I have to get up around 5:30 AM, so I'm definitely somewhat sleep-deprived—not quite down to four hours, but close to it. When I realized this, I thought, "This is it!" And I think this probably applies not just to me, but to a lot of people.
So, everyone, if your skin seems somehow dull, it might be caused by this kind of chronic sleep deprivation. Of course, the best solution is to get proper sleep. That said, I'm not going to stop doing my YouTube livestreams, so I do want to make sure I sleep well. But as for who discovered this connection with bilirubin—it was actually SK-II.
SK-II has been researching ways to properly enhance skin's clarity and translucency, and in the process they discovered this bilirubin connection—especially since, for Asian women in particular, translucency isn't just about melanin. So along with addressing sleep deprivation, they also thought about what could be done through cosmetics, and that's how they came to release this product a little while back: SK-II GenOptics Ultra Aura Essence.
The "secret sauce" in this SK-II GenOptics Ultra Aura Essence, of course, includes Pitera. But it also contains something called SDL, which is a sucrose fatty acid ester ingredient. SK-II discovered that this ingredient helps suppress the accumulation of bilirubin in the epidermis. This helps prevent the bilirubin that forms in the epidermis due to sleep deprivation from accumulating, which in turn helps suppress yellow dullness.
Another amazing thing I found out is that, since Pitera is included in this product, SK-II naturally also researched Pitera itself—and it turns out that Pitera also has this bilirubin-suppressing effect! It makes you wonder just how amazing Pitera really is.
So, in addition to that, there's also niacinamide, and Pitera itself also suppresses melanin production. So you get whitening effects from niacinamide, whitening effects from Pitera, plus Pitera also helping to suppress yellow tones, and on top of that, the sucrose fatty acid ester SDL helping to prevent bilirubin accumulation. I think they're approaching skin clarity and translucency from many different angles like this. So if you're chronically sleep-deprived and concerned about skin dullness, I think it's worth checking out this SK-II GenOptics Ultra Aura Essence.
What did you think? Apparently, Japanese people are known worldwide as one of the ethnic groups that sleeps the least. So we might already be prone to yellow dullness to begin with, and having sleep deprivation added on top of that, causing skin translucency to decline, is honestly a bit scary. Of course, getting good sleep is the number one solution, but if that's not possible, I think it's a good idea to also rely on the power of cosmetics.
Thank you so much for watching until the end today. If there are any topics like this you'd like me to cover, please feel free to leave a comment below—I'd love to hear from you. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
