Hello everyone. I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist. Today I'd like to introduce foods that make acne more likely to develop, as well as foods that help prevent it.
## What Is Acne?
Acne is a skin condition in which sebum accumulates and clogs pores, causing C. acnes (acne bacteria) — which thrive on sebum — to gather and trigger inflammation. While terms like "adult acne" and "teenage acne" are commonly used, dermatologically speaking both involve the same mechanism. During puberty, active sex hormone secretion increases sebum production, making acne more likely.
The foundation of acne treatment is clinical care, supplemented by a two-pronged approach addressing both skincare and diet.

## 3 Foods That Make Acne Worse
### #1: Dairy Products
This includes milk, cheese, and heavy cream (yogurt is considered a gray area, as it may also benefit the gut microbiome). Excessive consumption of these foods tends to increase sebum production. Research suggests that people prone to acne who consume large amounts of dairy develop acne 20–40% more often than those who do not.
### #2: Sugary Foods (High-Glycemic Foods)
Chocolate is often blamed for acne, but the real culprit is the sugar it contains, not the chocolate itself. When the body breaks down carbohydrates, it consumes B vitamins — nutrients that normally help regulate sebum secretion. Excessive sugar intake depletes these B vitamins, leading to overproduction of sebum and increased acne. Dark (bitter) chocolate is relatively low in sugar and rich in polyphenols, so it is less problematic.
### #3: Processed Foods
This category includes potato chips, fried foods, and sweetened cereals. These foods are typically high in omega-6 fatty acids, which can overstimulate sebum production, promote inflammation in the body, and weaken the skin's barrier function.

## 3 Foods That Help Prevent Acne
### #1: Zinc-Rich Foods
Zinc is a key nutrient in acne management — some clinics even prescribe zinc supplements as part of treatment. Research shows that people with acne tend to have lower blood zinc levels, and replenishing zinc has been associated with improved acne. While oysters are the most well-known source, zinc is also found in spinach, lentils, chickpeas, brown rice, and kale. Supplements are a good option when your diet falls short.
### #2: Fermented Foods
Yogurt, kimchi, miso, soy sauce, natto, pickles, and sauerkraut all qualify. The live lactic acid bacteria in fermented foods feed and improve the gut microbiome, which in turn increases skin moisture levels and helps reduce excess sebum production. For those who are sensitive to dairy, non-dairy fermented foods such as natto and kimchi are excellent alternatives. Probiotic supplements can also be helpful.
### #3: Omega-3–Rich Foods
Omega-3 fatty acids help counteract the effects of excess omega-6 intake. They are abundant in fatty fish such as mackerel and horse mackerel, as well as in perilla oil and shiso oil. Replacing fried and processed foods with fatty fish is a practical step toward an acne-friendlier diet.

## Summary
**Foods to limit:** Dairy products · Sugary/high-glycemic foods · Processed foods
**Foods to embrace:** Zinc-rich foods (spinach, lentils, chickpeas, brown rice, etc.) · Fermented foods (natto, kimchi, miso, etc.) · Omega-3-rich foods (fatty fish, perilla oil, etc.)
If you struggle with acne, start with professional treatment at a clinic, then support your results by reviewing both your skincare routine and your diet.
