Skin doctor on the alarming truth of not washing your face in the morning!

Hello everyone, I'm Toa, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today, I'd like to address a topic for beauty-conscious people and those who say, "I don't wash my face in the morning." I'll give you a thorough explanation from a dermatologist's perspective on whether you really should — or shouldn't — wash your face in the morning.
A little while back, I believe it was someone named Toa who mentioned on television that they don't use soap in the bath. Since then, the idea that "using soap or body wash dries out your skin" has spread, and as an extension of that, more and more people are washing their face with just water in the morning. It's true that using facial soap or cleansing foam can often dry out the skin.
But from a dermatologist's point of view, the straight answer is: depending on your age, skipping your morning face wash can actually be harmful. Here's why: the people who choose not to wash their face in the morning are likely mostly those in their 30s and 40s with dry skin. And those with dry skin — don't you apply a generous amount of skincare products before bed? I'm 42 myself, and I apply a thick, rich layer of moisturizer before sleeping precisely because my skin is dry. When you wake up in the morning, that heavy layer of product can still be sitting on your skin.
While it's beneficial when you first apply it, after a full night, dust and dirt can accumulate on it, and because it has been sitting on your skin for such a long time, a process called "oxidation" — essentially like rusting — occurs. When oxidized substances remain on your skin without being washed off, they can cause low-level inflammation. This subtle inflammation can lead to skin dryness and a dull, lackluster complexion.
So, ironically, it is precisely those with dry skin who choose to skip their morning face wash who should be washing their face thoroughly in the morning and then moisturizing properly afterward. That is the real key to beautiful skin.
Regardless of which cleanser you use, washing your face will always remove some of your skin's essential sebum. So think of cleansing simply as resetting and cleaning the skin — removing sebum and impurities. Even if you have dry skin, always wash your face, and if dryness is a concern, follow up with proper moisturizing. Think of "cleansing and moisturizing as one complete set" — that is the shortcut to beautiful skin.
That said, scrubbing vigorously with a cleanser creates friction on the skin, so the key points are: use a generous, rich lather, avoid rubbing the skin directly, and rinse off quickly. When rinsing, use lukewarm water — specifically, water that is slightly cooler than your own body temperature.
If you have dry skin and take good care of it at night, make sure you wash off that oxidized skincare in the morning. You may find that doing so actually reduces dullness and dryness rather than making it worse.
On this channel, I share tips for achieving beautiful skin and discuss health topics from a physician's perspective, so please consider subscribing. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
