Hello everyone. This is Yuri Tomo (Arata Tomori). Today I'd like to explain about Obagi's new cream, which has become very famous as a firming cream. So right away, Nomori-kun, what image do you have of Obagi? "Vitamin C, right?" That's right. For example, the C25 serum, and in terms of the first half of the year, the toner. When it comes to Obagi, it's pure vitamin C. There are two types of vitamin C: pure vitamin C and vitamin C derivatives. This high-concentration vitamin C is unstable, and the more you try to dissolve it in water, the more it crystallizes and forms clumps. Even though it's hard to dissolve, they managed to make a 25% vitamin C serum into a smooth, thick texture, and they're very skilled at incorporating vitamin C derivatives into toners. But this cream—what do you think it increases? What do you think it increases to create firmness? "Vitamin C, right?" Actually, this is called the Derma X series, but vitamin C has absolutely nothing to do with it. "Nothing to do with it at all?" To begin with, Obagi's X series, the cream with the black package, the first one was released around 2007 and has continued to evolve, but initially it focused not on collagen but on elastin. "I see." Increasing collagen has been around for a while, but focusing on elastin was interesting in its own way—that was the starting point for Obagi's cream. From there, they kept exploring how to increase elastin, plus how to change its quality, and eventually reached the point of thinking collagen matters too. By around 2018, they had progressed to how to increase both collagen and elastin. I don't know if you remember, but in 2022, creams that create firmness became a huge trend. The two products that sparked this were Obagi's previous Derma Advanced Lift cream and Elixir's Total V Firming Cream—both came out in 2022 and became huge hits as lifting creams. If I explain the technology it'll take too long, so please watch the previous video, but this one approaches the arrector pili muscle to lift the skin. "Where is the arrector pili muscle?" It's the muscle that makes your hair stand up, like goosebumps. By stimulating that muscle, it lifts the skin. This one applies tension, which increases collagen and elastin. Elixir tends to have more of a moisturizing feel, while Obagi tends to cling more, so if you're going to use one in the morning, Obagi; at night, Elixir. Or if you have dry skin, Obagi might be better—it's more like that, different approaches but both aiming to lift the skin, and that's what went viral in 2022. Now, the X series' Derma Advanced Lift has been upgraded this term and reborn as Obagi X Vitalizing Lift Cream. When you pull on your face, it creates friction, but pulling also triggers sensors that generate collagen, so they used to tell people to hold the cream in place when applying it. That discovery came from research using artificial skin. This time too, it comes from research using artificial skin, but the key point is collagen diversity. "So skincare is also in an era of diversity." Yes, skincare is also in an era of diversity, so nutrition really matters. I think I posted a video about POLA a while back—as analysis technology has advanced, we've come to understand what kinds of fibroblasts exist, called single-cell analysis. POLA used this single-cell analysis to discover so-called 'super fibroblasts' and focused research on increasing them to produce collagen. But this time, Obagi used single-cell analysis to focus on where the cells that make collagen are located and what kinds of cells they are. Going off on a bit of a tangent, but which location's fibroblasts are producing collagen has drawn attention in the medical field too. Especially between the epidermis and dermis, there's a basal layer that's very wavy—that area is called the papillary layer—and it's known in medical circles that fibroblasts located relatively higher up produce higher-quality collagen. That's why lasers that apply heat toward the papillary layer are now being focused on as sagging treatment devices. To that extent, it was already known that collagen synthesis ability differs depending on where the fibroblasts are located. So, when Obagi identified what kinds of fibroblasts and collagen-producing cells exist, they found fibroblasts in the upper papillary layer of the dermis as I mentioned, plus vascular endothelial cells that form blood vessels are also involved in collagen synthesis, and fibroblasts in the shallow papillary layer of the dermis also make collagen, and there are also mesenchymal stem cells that can become anything—these also make collagen. They discovered that there's diversity among the various collagen-producing cells, and focused on the idea that this diversity being ensured is precisely what allows collagen to be properly produced. The reason for this is that the person who originally developed this was someone who had been researching artificial skin. Artificial skin lacks firmness, sags, and is weak, so rather than putting in a single type of fibroblast, they found that having diversity among fibroblasts makes it firmer. They thought it was amazing that diversity mattered, and then thought about what the key point would be to generate that diversity. What do you think it is? The key point for generating diversity. "That's tough. Really tough." They found that having blood vessels in the artificial skin increases diversity. "I don't know." I thought that made sense. Blood vessels carry nutrients, as everyone knows, so as vascular endothelial cells that form blood vessels increase, blood vessels form, and as the environment improves with nutrients being transported around, it turns out that diversity is generated among the collagen-producing cells—mainly fibroblasts. So it's not just about fibroblasts, but about finding what kind of good environment to create. They searched for ingredients that would be good for increasing blood vessels, and found a combination of Laminaria angustata (a type of kelp), thin-leaf green laver extract, and Meristotheca papulosa—these are three individual ingredients, but this complex, by increasing diversity, increases various types of collagen. Collagen is mostly Type 1, but there's also soft Type 3, Type 4 which relates to the basement membrane, Type 5, and various other types—and it's been found that this creates the same kind of firmness as in youth. Thinking about it, it's true that when we apply lasers too, the laser applies heat, essentially damaging the skin once, creating a wound, and then through wound healing, it regenerates, and blood vessels appear first. "What do you mean by appearing first?" After the initial damage, when the skin tries to rebuild itself, blood vessels extend first. Then various things form on top of those blood vessels, various things get created—it's possible that the formation of blood vessels sends out a signal saying 'come here, collagen-producing cells, we need repair.' Also, there's massage—now people say to stop massaging, but for a long time massage was considered good for beauty, because massaging improves blood flow. Essentially, it turns out that improving blood flow generates diversity. But if that's difficult to do consistently, then by using a cream to increase vascular endothelial cells and thereby increase blood vessels, diversity is generated among fibroblasts, allowing various types of collagen to be produced, and firmness improves—that's amazing too. I was impressed. The previous stretch-stimulation approach that increases collagen when you pull on the skin is also incorporated in this one, so it keeps evolving. The previous cream was also said to need to be held in place firmly in the morning, but apparently there were some complaints about it flaking off in places. They've improved that too. Originally, the reason this had that 'pulled' texture was because of a design aimed at increasing hold-and-keep power. There was a thin, relatively soft material called pullulan that adheres closely but is fragile, and also a polymer material called PVP—being a polymer, it lifts, but if you put in too much, it becomes hard and cracks. So they combined these well to create something with hold that adheres closely but is still properly soft. But this time, they've added tamarind gum, which is one of the polysaccharide ingredients. It provides hold while adhering to the skin, and since cream contains a certain amount of water, once the water evaporates it forms a film that holds everything in place, so much so that even if you apply sunscreen or foundation on top, it doesn't come off. "That's amazing technology." Amazing technology. So because the cream's ingredients are underneath, their penetration is also improved compared to before. So on top of the previous ingredients, they've added ingredients that properly build blood vessels to generate diversity, and because it holds and forms a film, the design ensures the cream's ingredients are constantly penetrating. Initially it's a thick cream, like this. So I thought applying it a bit might feel oily. As I mentioned, when you apply it, it does feel like a thick film forms. There's quite a strong hold feeling. As it settles in, you feel a moment of water. It spreads smoothly. It spreads softly, but it feels like a film has formed. But it's not an unpleasant film—it feels like being wrapped/enveloped. "Yes, yes, that kind of feeling." And the stickiness isn't that strong—of course, being a cream, it's not completely absent, but as time passes it becomes drier/smoother, and indeed, applying foundation on top of this doesn't seem likely to cause flaking. It's different from being sticky—it's not sticky. When you touch a baby's skin, it's not smooth exactly, but it's plump, right? The surface has elasticity, and it really feels protected. "If I had to say, it's easy to use." I think it's easy to use. It penetrates, but you can tell the cream is there. But it's not an unpleasant presence—it's more like a protected presence, I'd say. It feels like there's a thin skin-like film layered on top, and it's a very pleasant cream to use. In 2022, when it came to creams that firmly hold and lift the skin, it was a question of Elixir or Obagi, but Obagi has evolved into something new, so the hold feeling is even stronger now. For those who experienced flaking with either product before, or who dislike the stickiness of creams, this Obagi Vitalizing Lift Cream might be good. Also, because the concept is about expanding blood vessels to generate cellular diversity, I think it might help with laser scars too. This is just speculation, but after getting a laser treatment, once the burns and scabs have healed after about a week, using this might help with wound healing, I think. Next time I get a laser treatment, I'd like to use this together with it—that's the kind of cream this was. "Amazing technology again this time. Would you say it's more of a major change rather than an evolution?" Well, Obagi itself has been working on elastin all along, and then research on collagen came next after elastin. To generate diversity in the cells that produce collagen, blood vessels are necessary, so it would be good to have lots of vascular endothelial cells that increase blood vessels—and finding ingredients that increase those—it's all building up. So the ingredients that increase elastin are the old ones that are still included, plus the ones that increase collagen are also included together, plus ones that improve quality are also included—it's all accumulating, that kind of feeling. "I see, understood." So this year, there are few genuinely new items—many products are 'upgraded versions' of previous ones, so that shows research is progressing in this direction. The previous ones were good too, but they've improved usability and penetration and renewed them, so there are many products like that. So even people who were fans before, or people who used the previous version, I think can make new discoveries. So, that's it—firmness is really being focused on this year. Of course, it's not like sagging skin will suddenly snap back tight, but increasing collagen serves as prevention for future sagging and puffiness. This time I introduced Obagi as a firmness item, so if you're interested, please check it out. Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Thank you too, Nomori-kun. "Thank you very much."
