Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today, I'll be diving deep into Shiseido's Haku, which could be called the very definition of whitening serum that everyone knows about. I've been asked by quite a few people to analyze it in depth since it's getting a renewal in March. The thing is, Haku got renewed last year too. And the year before that. So I was thinking that maybe there aren't any additional technologies or ingredients beyond what they already have, and I heard from many people that it hasn't changed that much. I was even a bit skeptical, thinking that Shiseido's research might have reached its limit. But it turned out to be a renewal packed with significant research achievements.
Shiseido has been conducting research on whitening for a long time. For example, back in the 1900s, Shiseido was the first to introduce arbutin as a whitening ingredient. After that, whitening research has focused on melanocytes—the cells that produce melanin. The approach has been to block what gets produced when melanocytes create melanin, preventing melanin production. Additionally, after melanocytes transfer melanin to skin cells, if skin turnover works properly, melanin gets expelled. So the approach was both to prevent melanocytes from making melanin and to promote cell turnover to expel already-formed melanin. This approach led to Shiseido's unique ingredient 4MSK.
So Shiseido has been launching whitening serums centered around 4MSK. Of course, Haku contains 4MSK, and so do products from various other brands. However, just because 4MSK is included doesn't mean everything is the same. Haku actually contains the latest research. In their previous 2022 renewal, they focused on blood vessels. What does focusing on blood vessels mean? Well, spots that reappear even after laser removal often have abnormal blood vessels. Areas with many abnormal blood vessels contain high levels of urokinase, a component that actually stimulates melanocytes and produces melanin. So in spots with many abnormal blood vessels, melanocytes become hyperactive and urokinase abounds—creating stubborn spots. They identified these areas and added ingredients to target them. That was the approach up until last year's renewal—tackling stubborn spots.
I thought there wouldn't be anything beyond that, but this time, research has progressed into how the skin environment differs between areas with spots and areas without. Actually, many whitening serums this year focus on how to handle melanin. For example, Fancl and Cosme Decorté's White Logist both approached how cells handle melanin after melanocytes transfer it. Shiseido has also been researching spot proliferation since around 2009 and has discovered something fascinating. It turns out that areas with spots versus areas without spots differ in a factor that allows skin cells to adhere properly to each other—something called cadherin. Areas with low cadherin levels, where cells don't stick together properly, are actually places where spots form easily.
Why is this? Cadherin's role is to stick cells together. When cadherin is low, cells don't adhere properly. Think of it like this: in skin with normal cadherin, the cell blocks are lined up neatly. But with low cadherin, they're uneven and poorly arranged. You might think melanin transfer would be difficult because of the distance, but skin cells apparently think they need to protect their keratinocytes when exposed to UV rays. So they become more active, produce more melanin, and try harder to deliver it even to the uneven areas.
From our perspective, that effort is admirable, but it shows how amazing skin function is. However, low cadherin levels trigger this hyperactivation, resulting in excessive melanin production. Plus, the skin isn't properly organized. Since cadherin levels are low and cell adhesion is poor, melanocytes normally migrate. They move to where UV hits, produce melanin, and transfer it. But in uneven areas, they don't migrate. They stay put, becoming hyperactivated and continuously producing melanin. That's why the same spot tends to form repeatedly.
This is amazing, right? If we could find ingredients that increase intercellular adhesion factors, we could suppress melanocyte activity and enable proper migration, providing a new approach to improving stubborn spots. That's what's included in this renewal—the Rosa canina fruit extract.
Of course, low cadherin means poor skin environment since cells aren't adhering properly. This renewal improves skin environment while suppressing melanocyte activity. Additionally, Haku already contained tranexamic acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties and prevents skin irritation. While controlling irritation, the Rosa canina fruit extract boosts cadherin, an intercellular adhesion factor, so the renewal approaches spots from multiple angles by improving skin environment.
But here's another reason Shiseido is amazing—they didn't stop there. They wondered if there was a way to increase penetration of 4MSK, their signature whitening ingredient. They wanted even better penetration since 4MSK is truly versatile and represents Shiseido's whitening excellence. So they developed new penetration technology, which is included in this renewal.
4MSK is water-soluble, dissolving easily in water. That's why it's versatile across toners, serums, and more. But skin has sebum, so water-soluble ingredients actually penetrate poorly. Normally, you'd add ingredients that expand barrier function for better penetration. But Shiseido thought differently—what if they dissolved 4MSK in oil and had it penetrate through the lipid barrier together with the oil? That would put less stress on skin. However, mixing water and oil is extremely difficult. While oil agents and surfactants exist for this, they researched oils with good compatibility with 4MSK.
They discovered that when combining lauryl hydroxysultaine and xylitol—both solids—the melting point decreases enough to create a liquid. Both are oil-soluble components, so the resulting liquid oil can dissolve 4MSK effectively. Amazing, right? They understood 4MSK's characteristics and explored how combining two solids could create a liquid that's compatible with 4MSK. The result is lauryl hydroxysultaine, xylitol, and 4MSK together, creating a stress-free skin penetration technology.
So this renewal includes both a secret ingredient blend and better penetration technology for 4MSK, their signature ingredient. The texture remains unchanged—it's a milky serum, not quite cream-like. A little goes a long way, so one bottle should last 2-3 months.
As mentioned, this renewal includes new approach ingredients alongside the traditional 4MSK and tranexamic acid. The key point is the new penetration technology for 4MSK. If you've used Haku before and found it good, you'll notice even better results. And if you weren't entirely convinced before, the combination of new penetration technology and secret ingredients approaching spots from multiple angles makes this a truly excellent serum.
How was that? I've had many requests to analyze Haku, and while it has renewed multiple times, I initially thought its innovation had plateaued. But this renewal proved exceptional. If you enjoyed this analysis or were impressed by Shiseido's research, please share your thoughts in the comments and give a thumbs up. See you in the next video. Thank you for watching!
