Five Habits for Beautiful Skin [Practicing Dermatologists]

Hello everyone, I'm Dr. Tomori Nitta, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today, I'd like to share five habits that dermatologists practice for beautiful skin.
The first habit is applying sunscreen every single day, 365 days a year. This may seem obvious to dermatologists, but it's worth emphasizing: what's known as 'photoaging' accounts for approximately 70% of skin aging. I'm often asked by journalists, 'When do you start applying sunscreen?' — and the answer is simple: every day, rain or shine, cloudy or snowy. No exceptions.
The second habit is applying vitamin C in the morning. Vitamin C is practically synonymous with beautiful skin. It works both topically and when consumed internally. Its benefits include sebum control for acne-prone skin and stimulation of collagen and elastin production to prevent sagging. The key reason dermatologists apply it in the morning is to harness its powerful antioxidant properties. UV exposure generates free radicals in the skin, which are a major cause of hyperpigmentation. Vitamin C neutralizes these free radicals. While applying it at night is still beneficial, using it in the morning maximizes its antioxidant effect against UV-induced oxidative stress.
The third habit is using whitening (brightening) skincare products year-round — not just in summer. Like sunscreen, brightening products should be used consistently throughout the year. Most brightening cosmetics contain anti-inflammatory ingredients such as tranexamic acid, kojic acid, and vitamin C. Since skin aging is fundamentally driven by inflammation — triggered by UV exposure, friction, and dryness — using ingredients that combat inflammation is essential for anti-aging as well as brightening. That's why many female dermatologists incorporate brightening products into their daily skincare routines.
The fourth habit is choosing red wine when drinking alcohol. Red wine is well known for its grape-derived polyphenols, but it also contains resveratrol, a compound with exceptionally high antioxidant activity that has been shown to help suppress collagen degradation. Interestingly, red wine is often paired with meat dishes, and since collagen synthesis requires protein, this combination is actually quite sensible from a skincare perspective. For those who don't tolerate alcohol well, a mocktail-style sangria made with cut fruit and cinnamon is a great alternative. Cinnamon itself is also known for its circulation-boosting and skin-benefiting properties.
The fifth habit is double-using vitamin A. Vitamin A — commonly known as retinol — is a favorite among dermatologists for its ability to increase skin hydration and stimulate collagen and elastin production for plumper, more youthful-looking skin. There are two categories: 'active' vitamin A and 'protective' vitamin A. Active vitamin A (retinol) can cause peeling if overused and may increase photosensitivity, so it's best reserved for nighttime use. Protective vitamin A — such as retinyl palmitate or retinyl acetate — can be applied in the morning, where it acts similarly to vitamin C by helping to shield the skin from UV-induced damage. Therefore, many dermatologists use protective vitamin A in the morning and active vitamin A at night — a double-use approach that keeps the skin looking radiant.
To summarize, the five habits are: ① Apply sunscreen 365 days a year; ② Apply vitamin C in the morning; ③ Use brightening skincare year-round; ④ Choose red wine when drinking; ⑤ Double-use vitamin A morning and night. I believe the reason many female dermatologists have such beautiful skin is precisely because they've made these habits a part of their daily lives. I personally practice all five of these habits. I hope you'll give them a try as well.
