Hello, I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist. Summer is really hot, isn't it? And when it's hot, your skin is also under a great deal of stress. Today, I'd like to talk about three things you should never do to your skin during summer. Please watch until the end.
Summer is a season when skin is particularly prone to damage. The number one cause is UV radiation. UVA, which is related to photoaging, shines year-round, but UVB, which causes skin inflammation, increases significantly in summer. This means summer is a season when your skin can become directly inflamed. On top of that, the heat makes it easy to skip wearing a hat, and wearing a mask can cause your sunscreen to rub off — all of which makes summer especially harsh on skin.
The three things that are harmful to skin are: sunburn, friction, and dryness. In a normal summer, you only needed to worry about UV rays, but with mask-wearing, your skin is constantly exposed to friction, and the humidity trapped inside masks can break down your skin's barrier function, leading to dryness as well. This summer, all three of these damaging factors are at play, making proper skin care more important than ever.
**Summer Skin Mistake #1: Neglecting Moisturization**
The main reason skin becomes dry is that moisture is pulled away from the skin when the humidity in the air drops — which is why winter dryness is well understood. However, skin can also dry out easily in summer. In addition to mask-related barrier function damage, air conditioning is a major factor that lowers indoor humidity. Many people notice their skin feels dry in the morning after sleeping with the air conditioner on all night.
Skipping creams or lotions in summer because it "feels heavy" can lead to a weakened barrier, inflammation, and accelerated skin damage. Unless you are prone to acne, those with normal or dry skin should continue to moisturize thoroughly in summer — especially during nighttime skin care while the air conditioner is running.
**Summer Skin Mistake #2: Overdoing Pore Care**
One of the main reasons pores enlarge is the buildup of sebum inside them. When the skin tries to break down this sebum, it produces free fatty acids. These acids gently dissolve the opening of the pore to help the sebum escape. However, when this process is excessive, the surrounding skin also breaks down, causing pores to widen into a "crater-like" shape — known as sagging or enlarged pores. The inflammation caused by free fatty acids is the primary cause of this type of enlarged pore.
Aggressive pore care such as pore strips and peeling can be effective for clogged pores, but for crater-type enlarged pores, it must always be paired with anti-inflammatory skin care. In summer, when inflammation from UV rays and masks is already present, overdoing pore care can lead to chronic inflammation, resulting in dullness and rough skin texture. Stick to mild peeling or light scrubbing in the T-zone only, and always include ingredients that help calm inflammation.
**Summer Skin Mistake #3: Relying Solely on Oral Sun Protection Supplements**
Drinkable sunscreen supplements do not actually block UV rays. They contain ingredients that help repair and reduce damage caused by sun exposure. To use an analogy: topical sunscreen is like fireproofing a building to prevent a fire from starting, while oral sun supplements are like putting out a fire after it has already started and rebuilding. Even after the "fire" is put out, some inflammation remains — it cannot be brought to zero.
The correct approach is to first block UV rays thoroughly with a topical sunscreen, and then use an oral supplement to help address any remaining UV damage that could not be fully blocked. Never assume that taking an oral supplement means you don't need to apply sunscreen. That is a mistake you should absolutely avoid.
Those are the three things you should never do to your skin in summer. The three main causes of summer skin damage are dryness, friction, and UV exposure. With mask-wearing continuing, this summer is even harsher on skin than usual, so please take extra care to address all three.
