Autumn seems to have passed, and it already feels like winter—so cold now. Didn't autumn kind of disappear this year? I thought there wasn't going to be a fall, and then boom, it just went straight to winter. It's suddenly so cold.
We got comments asking to see some warm goods. Well, you'd think doctor-san would be all about summer heat, but actually she's cold-sensitive even in summer. She was doing cold-countermeasure goods for air conditioning even in summer.
So this time, at a viewer's request, I want to introduce warm goods for winter. I was born on Miyako Island and now live in a row house in Tokyo, but I'm always feeling cold, cold, cold.
If you watch this, you'll surely stay warm this winter. Warm—nice, sounds great. Let's get right into it.
Warm pants or extra-thick tights are a given, and this one is also something everyone's familiar with—yes, the 'kotatsu-like socks.' These have appeared on my channel many times too. I actually bought a new pair for this. My personal pair had pilling on it, so I felt embarrassed to show it, and thought I'd buy a black pair to show on camera. But honestly, these are in my bag 365 days a year, no matter what. Whether I'm traveling for work or filming a video, it's no exaggeration to say these are always with me.
"Are these the type you wear only at certain times, not normally?"
Yes, exactly. When I go to the clinic I change into nurse shoes, so I wear these underneath. Same for filming—these are my go-to. I also like compression socks. I have some from Orbis or maybe its subsidiary brand—cute colored compression socks. I wear those for air conditioning countermeasures, but compression alone doesn't necessarily mean warmth.
With these particular ones, though, they're warm even worn over tights, and warm even worn directly over cold bare feet. No matter the situation, wearing these makes you warm. Calling them 'like a kotatsu' really isn't an exaggeration.
"Wonderful. By the way, what about your feet when sleeping?"
Actually, you shouldn't wear these to sleep. If heat isn't released to some degree, you can't sleep deeply. People fall into deep sleep when body temperature rises and then falls, so if your feet are fully covered by socks, the heat can't escape. So it's better to avoid covering your hands and feet completely—if your feet are cold, leg warmers are a better choice. I believe there's also a 'sleep-friendly' version of these kotatsu-like socks with open toes, so that type would be better for sleeping. I make sure to warm my feet thoroughly before getting into bed, so I'm fine. Warming the neck is trickier, though—after my bath, I finish skincare and neck care, and then put something like this on before sleeping.
You might think, 'we already know that,' but there are times when you're chilled to the core. For those times when even these don't warm your feet, here's another item.
These are warm slippers. They're fleece-lined and warm, and they have a cord—you plug in a mobile battery and turn it on, and the inside heats up. Amazing, right?
"Powered by electricity."
You can use it for about 3 hours. The reason I pursued this item is because there's an original version. Please don't judge me.
"We won't judge."
During my national exam prep, I studied like crazy. I studied at the library, and the seats by the window were freezing. My feet were cold back then, and someone I was dating at the time gave me this, saying 'You must be cold, right?'
"You can really feel the era in that cord."
Even after moving so many times, I never threw this one away—it's been with me through every winter.
"You're the type who says objects aren't to blame."
Exactly, objects aren't to blame, and it's no exaggeration to say I passed my national exam partly thanks to this slipper. Plus, you go to all sorts of places, and your feet get cold. As I mentioned, if you put on socks while your feet are already warm, you'll stay toasty. But I have cold sensitivity from deep within, so once my feet turn ice-cold, it takes forever to warm up even with these on. I've relied on this for almost 30 years, but the downside is you're tethered by the cord.
"Right, the cord."
You're tied down by the cord. So I searched for something better and finally arrived at this. You can buy it on Amazon and such, so please check it out.
"This is amazing."
You can't wear these slippers outdoors, though. For location shoots or going to the park with my kids, this scarf is my companion. It works on the same principle—there's a cord, you charge it, turn it on, and it warms up. So cozy. For location shoots or park outings with kids. It charges via USB-A, and lasts about 3 hours max. Just warming your neck makes a huge difference, so this is great to have too.
"So what about when you sleep?"
Ah, right, when sleeping. For some reason this area gets cold when sleeping, right? For that, I use a neck warmer.
"Oh, interesting."
You just put it on like this. My neck is a bit longer than average, so it fits nicely and snugly, which also gives some support. This brand originally made maternity wear. Pregnant women can get cold easily, so it was originally meant for prevention in that context, but I use it too. I recommend this to a lot of people. I use it almost every day since I sleep with my kids. Kids run hot, so they kick off the blankets even in summer—which means I get cold even in summer. So I mostly use this one. But in early spring, if I'm not running the AC and it gets a bit too warm, and I still want to warm my neck, I switch to this other one—I actually got this at a Wenex event. It's recovery wear, so it promotes blood circulation plus warmth, and since it's thin, I use it for travel or in spring/summer. I basically can't sleep without one of these on, and I do sleep deeply thanks to it, so I think it's really great.
"You're quite sensitive to cold up to your neck. Doesn't your neck get cold?"
"Not really, for me."
Doesn't the blanket only come up to about here? Then this part sticks out and gets cold—I think this is a common thing among cold-sensitive people.
Next is inner care—improving things from the inside. When I get cold, as a bit of a trick, I drink kakkonto (a herbal remedy). The key is to mix it with warm water and drink it—it only works if it's with warm water. Behind the stomach there's a major artery, the aorta. When the stomach warms up, the blood flowing through the aorta warms up too, so drinking anything warm—not just hot water but warm coffee too—makes your body feel warm for that reason. Kakkonto also contains ephedrine, which activates the sympathetic nervous system and improves blood flow, so drinking it with hot water raises your body heat even more. Whenever I feel a chill or sense I'm getting cold, I always drink kakkonto. Opinions may vary on this, but rather than just feeling cold, if you feel like you might be catching a cold, I'd recommend drinking kakkonto with hot water. And this one is also really effective—smell it. Smells potent, right? It's a herbal medicine.
"Whoa, smells like bath salts."
Right? There are bath additives like this too. If you simmer and drink this, you stay warm all day. This is a kanpo remedy for poor circulation—since poor blood flow makes your hands and feet cold, when the chill is really bad, I simmer this and drink it for about three days.
Also—sorry, this is my personal item—but I have this golden milk, which has spices in it. It's kind of like chai. It contains turmeric, which improves liver function and overall condition, plus cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper, and ginger. I bought this online, and mixing it into oat milk or regular milk and drinking it warms your body, so I often drink it before bed. Though, as you can tell, turmeric can stain your teeth yellow, so be careful about that before bedtime. It's like an herbal remedy that improves your overall condition, so it's easy to incorporate, and I drink it often. It's not sweet, so you can add it to all sorts of foods—that's another reason I recommend it. Not just dissolved in milk, but you can add a bit to cup soups when you drink them, or use it generously as a spice. I also add it to curry sometimes, especially when I want to warm up.
Oh no, I forgot to bring one item—there's a heat patch you can stick across your whole back.
"Something like that exists?"
It's called a blood-flow-improving shoulder heat patch. You stick it on your shoulders, and they stay warm the whole time. It's meant to prevent shoulder stiffness, but in my case, I believe shoulder stiffness is caused by poor circulation from the cold, so sticking this on keeps me warm even when I go outside. There's also another one in the same line called 'neck relief heat patch,' for stiff smartphone necks—similar idea. The shoulder one is a bit wider horizontally, while this one extends up to the neck a bit. You might want to switch between them depending on your outfit. I hope everyone can get through this winter's cold with these.
So, how was that? Today I introduced the warm goods that I, Arata Tomori, born in the tropics, genuinely and heavily rely on. If you all have any warm goods recommendations, please write them in the comments—I'd love to hear them. Now everyone, please take care not to catch a cold, and I'll see you in the next video. Bye-bye!
