Hello everyone! This is Arata Tomori.
Today I want to cover skincare habits that people commonly do, or overdo, which are often seen on social media. Both of these can be bad for your skin, so if you think you might be doing something wrong, please watch until the end.
Alright, let's stop! The first common/overdone beauty habit is "not washing your face." This applies to morning cleansing as well as skipping double cleansing at night. If a cleanser says you don't need to double cleanse, then you don't have to, but I used to not wash my face much either. However, after looking at various data, I now double cleanse. This was actually a mistake I was making myself. Let me explain why you need to wash your face. Washing your face removes sebum and dirt. The reason "don't wash your face in the morning" became popular a while back was because over-washing with facial cleanser removes not just dirt and sebum, but also the important sebum that maintains your barrier function. So for people with dry or sensitive skin, it was said that not washing in the morning was better—dirt can be removed with just water, so you should leave the sebum. That's how "don't wash your face in the morning" became a trend.
I don't think this is entirely wrong. Of course, for people with dry skin, washing their face too many times can strip away sebum. But people with dry skin often apply cream or even oil at night before sleeping, so sometimes skincare products remain on their face in the morning. When there's oil on your skin, washing with just water won't remove that oil. That in itself isn't necessarily bad, but as time passes, it oxidizes, and having oxidized oil sitting on your skin for a long time isn't great. Nighttime cleansing removes it, but if you continue not washing your face in the morning for months, the oxidized sebum stays on longer, which can lead to skin irritation. So it doesn't have to be every day, but washing thoroughly every 2-3 days in the morning is important.
Up to this point, I've said this many times on YouTube before, but the issue is double cleansing. As I mentioned at the beginning, even though products often say double cleansing is necessary, I often skipped it myself. I thought, since I'm using a cleanser, makeup and sebum should already be removed, so there's no need to cleanse again. But recently, sunscreen and makeup have become harder to remove. Film-forming technology keeps advancing, creating sunscreens that don't break down during the day and foundations that are more resistant to smudging. Some of these films can be removed with cleanser alone, while others are designed to be removed with facial wash. Since we can't easily tell which is which, at the very least, when wearing thorough makeup, double cleansing helps ensure that makeup and stubborn base products are properly removed. If a product says "no need for double cleansing," it's probably designed to be removed properly. But if it says "double cleansing recommended" or emphasizes strong film-forming technology, or if you're wearing heavy makeup, you should double cleanse to avoid residue that could lead to skin irritation. If you're using products that don't come off easily, make sure to properly remove them. After that, moisturizing thoroughly is important, but washing is equally important. There are cleansers designed for dry skin too, so try adjusting and using those as needed.
Next, let's stop! The second common/overdone beauty habit is "layering multiple serums." I often get asked on Instagram and YouTube whether it's okay to layer several serums because there are ones people want to use. But I want you to know—it's meaningless. Naturally, your skin can only absorb a certain amount. The more you layer, the less effective it becomes. It's not just bad for your skin—frankly, it's pointless. If you can't expect results anyway, layering more products is just a waste of money. So I'd say one or two products max, and even then, apply them selectively—for example, using something for your T-zone, or for areas with spots you're concerned about, or using different products morning and night. Because you're worried about sagging, pores, and whitening all at once, you end up layering everything, but that's not just pointless—it wastes money and can cause irritation. Simplifying your routine is key to beautiful skin. So please be careful about overdoing it in this way.
Next, let's stop! The third common/overdone beauty habit is "leaving sheet masks on for too long." I've made videos about sheet masks so many times that you might be thinking, "I've heard this a million times, I get it already!" But recently, someone told me about a different kind of mask—not the non-woven type, but a thick, jelly-like gel mask that's popular in Korea, worn overnight while sleeping, and peeled off in the morning to reveal clear skin. They said it's fine to leave this type on for a long time since it's trending on social media, and several people asked me if that's really okay.
It's true these are thick, agar-like sheets, but from a dermatological standpoint, this is still not okay. Obviously, sheet masks contain moisture, and since they seal your skin, your skin ends up getting waterlogged. Leaving something wet on your skin for a long time is the same issue whether it's non-woven fabric or hydrogel—there's no difference. The problem is that leaving it on too long causes your skin to become waterlogged, which weakens your barrier function. So while it's on, moisture might be going in, but as time passes, your barrier function itself gets damaged during that time, meaning whatever went in likely comes back out. Because your skin looks smooth and glowing right after removing it, people imagine it must be great for the skin, but from a dermatological perspective, I can't say it's actually beneficial. I've discussed this with various doctors, and leaving it on for a long time is just not good, however you look at it. So as I've said many times on this channel, no matter what form a sheet mask takes, leaving it on for a long time is a no-go. Aim for 5 minutes, or at most under 10 minutes. Products good for short application times likely contain a high concentration of active ingredients. If you recall chemistry class, substances move from areas of high concentration to low concentration—this is basic concentration gradient. Sheet masks with high concentrations of ingredients will move from the mask (high concentration) to your skin (low concentration), so ingredients should absorb even in a short time. Since shorter absorption times are better for your skin, brands that recommend 3-5 minutes are probably safer. So leaving something wet on your skin for a long time is something you should avoid.
Next, let's stop! The fourth common/overdone beauty habit is "using a gentle cleanser." You might wonder what's wrong with using something gentle on your skin, but similar to the facial washing point earlier, gentle cleansers typically don't have strong makeup-removing power. So if you're wearing proper makeup and sunscreen that's designed to be long-lasting, a gentle cleanser might not fully remove it. The basic principle is that removal matters. For example, among cleansing oils, those made with plant-based oils tend to be gentle in cleansing power, whereas those using ester-based oils tend to have stronger cleansing power. It's not wrong for people with sensitive skin to use oil-based products, but you should avoid situations where makeup doesn't get properly removed. Not just makeup—recently, many sunscreens are also covered with hard-to-remove films. Especially people with sensitive or dry skin often apply sunscreen thoroughly, so even if your makeup isn't heavy, if you're using a sunscreen that's difficult to remove, and you're only using plant-based cleansers, you might not even be properly removing the sunscreen. So it's not about strictly using ester-based products—it's better to choose products that combine plant oils and ester-based oils well, rather than leaning entirely on one type. I used to say to choose your cleanser based on how heavy your makeup is, but since sunscreens have also evolved—some are easy to remove, some are hard to remove, some have strong film-forming technology—if you're using a sunscreen with strong film technology, you may need something beyond just a gentle cleanser. Please keep that in mind.
Finally, the last common/overdone beauty habit is "using a sheet mask after getting sunburned." You might think, "I was outside today and got sunburned, so I'll use a sheet mask to prevent dark spots"—and at first glance, that seems right. I do this myself sometimes, but there's one thing you need to be careful about. Sunburn is basically a mild burn. Especially when there's redness or a stinging sensation, that's essentially a mild burn state called "netsusho" (heat injury). If you apply a sheet mask in that state, the ingredients in the mask can actually cause further inflammation. Think about it this way—if you got burned by hot water and your skin turned red, would you put a sheet mask on that spot? You can probably imagine that it would sting. The same thing happens on your face. If you got sun-warmed but you're not feeling hot or stinging, then it's fine to use a sheet mask with beneficial ingredients. But if your skin is red, feels hot, or stings, that's definitely a burn. In that case, instead of a sheet mask, you should cool your skin down, then apply a cream for sensitive skin or something non-irritating afterward. Leaving a sheet mask on for even 5 or 10 minutes carries a high risk of irritation in that state. If you don't judge this correctly, you could end up doing something harmful, potentially causing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (different from typical UV-induced spots) after the burn. So please judge whether it's a mild burn or not before deciding to use a sheet mask.
So, what did you think? Some of this might be surprising, or different from what I've said before, but as cosmetics keep evolving, I think it's important to update your knowledge. I used to say things like "honestly, I don't do double cleansing," but now I do double cleanse. So if you feel like your skin condition has been off lately, maybe it's because you haven't updated your skincare routine. Please take this opportunity to review it.
