Hello everyone, this is Tomori Ara. Today I want to talk about new whitening serums that came out in 2026. The key ingredient featured is kojic acid, and three highly anticipated products have been released. Today I'll explain what type of person should use kojic acid, and introduce the kojic acid serum that best matches you. All three of these are from the Kosé group. They're each subtly different, so I want to introduce which kojic acid product suits you best. First, what kind of ingredient is kojic acid? It's a whitening active ingredient that was discovered from the white part of koji (rice malt) used in sake brewing. When making sake, koji mold is cultivated, and kojic acid is extracted from this koji mold. It's been about 20 years since kojic acid was discovered, and about 40 years since it was approved as a whitening active ingredient. It's an ingredient with a solid track record of safety and effectiveness. As for how it suppresses spots: inside cells called melanocytes, an enzyme called tyrosinase produces melanin. Kojic acid takes away the enzyme's copper ion, preventing melanin production. It's an excellent ingredient that stops spots at their source. Now let me explain each product. Of the three, the one I find most affordable and cutting-edge is ONE BY KOSÉ Melano Shot P. This is the 4th generation of Melano Shot, which keeps getting renewed. The 4th generation focuses on how, once you get one spot, it tends to spread—that's what this one focuses on. Through Kosé's latest 3D analysis, they found that melanocytes are becoming activated even in areas that aren't yet spots. This involves something called dendrites—when activated, they stretch out significantly. When not activated, they look different. Finding that the dendrites of melanocytes in areas that aren't yet spots are stretched out—meaning they're becoming active—was discovered through this 3D analysis. Why do these dendrites spread? Melanocytes extend their dendrites to pass melanin to epidermal cells. In this exchange, the epidermal cells also send a signal requesting melanin—a protein called PAR2. When dendrites extend and PAR2 protein increases, epidermal cells absorb more of the melanin produced. Kosé discovered this time that this activity increases not just at spot locations, but in surrounding areas that haven't yet become spots. If you can cut this off, you can prevent spots from forming. What they found to do this is called Shinpi Extract (mystery extract), which suppresses the signal for receiving melanin. It suppresses both dendrite extension and the melanin request signal. But that's not all—there's an even more welcome benefit: an approach targeting melanin-related pore issues common among younger people. When sebum oxidizes, it creates something called lipid peroxide, which causes pore blackening. To prevent lipid peroxide, they've added Saxifraga (Yukinoshita) extract. This product addresses multi-faceted uneven skin tone—wanting to suppress melanin while also addressing pore blackening. That's what ONE BY KOSÉ offers. Since it's at an accessible price point, I think it's great for those who want to try Kosé products. Next is Cosme Decorte's White Logist. It's labeled as having 1.8 times the kojic acid, giving the impression that more kojic acid is simply better. This is the 8th generation, but they didn't just increase kojic acid by 1.8 times—kojic acid itself is a strongly acidic ingredient. Apparently, at high concentrations it tends to separate. Because of poor stability, it doesn't penetrate well and isn't very effective. So what did they do? As is characteristic of Cosme Decorte, they used liposomes—penetrating capsules—to ensure stability while achieving high concentration. But this time, it's not just that. What's also impressive is that they revealed that signals also come from the dermis, and they suppressed that too. There's joint research included with the University of Cincinnati, which researches spots. In the dermis where spots form, there's something called a skin tone maintenance factor. This factor suppresses excessive melanin production, but it's found to be reduced—which is why spots keep increasing. So, wouldn't it make sense to increase the factor that regulates skin tone? What they found for this is rooibos extract. Having achieved an approach to the dermis too, this product works on both the epidermis and dermis, tackling spots from all directions. Plus, the 1.8x kojic acid boost is impressive too. Who needs this? People who get spots forming in the same place even after laser treatment might find this beneficial. Laser treatment destroys melanin in the epidermis to eliminate spots, but changes in the dermis aren't affected by lasers. Also, for those who want to emphasize the latest department store cosmetics insights, and those who want to use 1.8x kojic acid—this would be good for kojic acid experts. Finally, there's Albion's Exage Sirius Star Bright Serum. Even just the name sounds brilliant, doesn't it? True to its name, this is a serum that harnesses light as an ally. Did you know there's an ingredient called cryptochrome that absorbs blue light and emits an emerald blue glow? This was originally something cells had to protect themselves from sunlight, but there's a surprising mechanism where absorbing blue light enhances whitening effects. However, it's known that melanocytes at the source of spots have low cryptochrome activity. If you add an ingredient that increases cryptochrome activity, the more blue light hits your skin, the more beautiful it becomes, right? Through research, they found an ingredient called caproyl glycine. Additionally, by adding ophiopogon extract and kojic acid, it suppresses tyrosinase activity as mentioned earlier, suppresses dendrite extension, and prevents melanin clumping. Also, you've all heard of NMN, right? NMN is apparently a substance that glows within the body. This product also works to increase NMN. Who is this best suited for? People who regularly look at PCs and smartphones and are exposed to a lot of blue light will become whiter. Also, those who want glowing skin, and those who want to use the latest department store cosmetics approaches—this would be perfect for them. So, how was that? Even though the whitening active ingredient is the same kojic acid, these are products that differ based on what kind of skin you want to achieve.
