Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. It's been getting colder and colder, hasn't it? On cold days, the warmth of a bath really soaks into you. On this channel, I've talked extensively about the importance of taking baths, but you there—you might be taking your bath the wrong way! Today I'll thoroughly explain the wrong ways to take a bath, so please take this opportunity to reconsider your own bathing habits and switch to a bathing style that's beneficial for your health. Please watch until the end.
Now, right away—I think many people vaguely believe that baths are good for the body, but actually there's research suggesting that this bathing habit might be the secret to Japanese people's longevity. What kind of research is it? There's a study that tracked 3,200 elderly people over 6 years. When comparing people who bathe every day versus those who don't, the data showed that depression symptoms were suppressed by 24% in the daily bathers. Also, in a survey of 3,000 people aged 20 and over, those who bathed every day had higher happiness levels compared to those who didn't. Additionally, more frequent bathing is associated with a lower risk of needing long-term care. In any case, it's clear that bathing—not just showering, but actually soaking in a bath—is good for both the body and mind.
But as I mentioned at the beginning, if you bathe the wrong way, it can become a burden on your body.
First point: many people think half-body bathing (soaking only up to the waist) is good. Why did it come to be considered good? It's actually a bathing method meant for people who need to avoid putting strain on their blood pressure or heart. So if you have heart disease or very high blood pressure, please continue with half-body bathing as before, but ideally, everyone else should soak up to the shoulders.
A bath is meant to warm the body. With half-body bathing, the upper body doesn't get warm, and it takes a very long time for blood circulation to improve. There's also the effect of lymphatic flow and the relaxation effect from water pressure, but with half-body bathing, these effects are halved. The correct method is to soak up to the shoulders at around 40°C and get out after about 10 minutes. Of course, if you must do half-body bathing due to heart conditions or lack of physical stamina as I mentioned, that's different, but for everyone else, soaking up to the shoulders for about 10 minutes is the way to go.
Is a long bath then bad? It's not necessarily bad, but it can lead to skin dryness. As I've said many times, moisture is present in the bathroom, and if you stay in it for too long, your skin becomes waterlogged, so please make sure to soak up to your shoulders as I've mentioned repeatedly.
Also, do you do a pre-rinse (kakeyu) before bathing? Baths tend to cause sudden fluctuations in blood pressure. To prevent these fluctuations, a pre-rinse is necessary. Before soaking in the tub, pour hot water over your feet about 10 times, and finish by pouring it over your shoulders before entering the bath—this method causes less blood pressure fluctuation, allowing you to bathe with peace of mind.
Timing is also very important. The worst thing you can do is bathe right after eating. Right after a meal, blood flow tends to concentrate in the digestive area, but if you take a bath, blood circulation improves elsewhere, which can cause indigestion. Finish your meal about 1-2 hours before bathing. Also, to suppress appetite, it's said to be good to bathe before eating. If you bathe first and then decide to eat, your appetite will be suppressed, and you can relax after eating, so if you're unsure, I recommend bathing first.
You might also think bathing right after exercise would be good, but right after exercise, blood pressure tends to rise, so it's better to let your heart rate come down a bit before bathing. If you bathe while your blood pressure is already sharply elevated, it can raise blood pressure too much, putting strain on your heart, so it's better to cool down first before bathing. Also, during exercise, blood flow goes strongly to the muscles to aid in muscle fatigue recovery, but if you take a bath, blood flow goes to areas other than the muscles too. This means muscle repair takes longer. Similar to meals, it's actually better to wait about 30 minutes after exercise before bathing.
Regarding how to wash your body—don't scrub vigorously. When you soak in the bath, water penetrates the stratum corneum, and simply rinsing with the shower afterward removes dirt and dead skin cells. If you're concerned about odor, it's fine to use body soap, but even just rinsing with a pre-rinse before use can remove a fair amount, and soaking in hot water afterward removes excess substances, so there's really no need to force yourself to use body soap. Just bathing alone causes intercellular lipids to be released, so please avoid scrubbing vigorously.
This is also often mentioned, but make sure to drink water properly before bathing. Drinking water after bathing isn't necessarily bad either, but since about 800ml of water is said to be lost during a single bath session, please try to drink about a cup of water before entering.
To summarize: rather than half-body bathing, when taking a bath, soak up to your shoulders at around 40°C and finish up in about 10 minutes. This is good for your skin, good for your physical health, and good for relaxing your mind and body. Wait about 30 minutes after meals and after exercise before bathing. Do a pre-rinse about 10 times before soaking, and if possible, bathe every day—this can help suppress winter depression-like symptoms and increase happiness levels, so I recommend not skipping your bath.
Bathing before bed raises your body temperature, and the subsequent drop in temperature makes it easier to fall asleep, so I think it's best to take your bath about an hour before going to sleep.
Well, so how was that? During autumn and winter, I hope you can refresh your spirits with the correct bathing method and enjoy a bathing style that boosts your happiness. Thank you for watching until the end today. This channel discusses beauty and health topics, so please subscribe if you enjoyed this. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
