I'm going to answer all your questions about VIO hair removal. In a previous video, I talked about what kind of aesthetic treatments I've had, sort of revealing my secrets, and in it I mentioned that the very first cosmetic treatment I ever had was full-body hair removal. I also mentioned that I had removed hair from my face, of course, as well as my VIO area. After that video, I got quite a few questions and inquiries like, "Doctor, isn't VIO hair removal bad for your body?" or "Doesn't it cause any abnormalities? Is its safety established?" So today, among all types of hair removal, I want to focus specifically on VIO hair removal and discuss these questions in detail, so please watch until the end.
As I explained thoroughly in a previous episode about hair removal, medical hair removal and salon (esthetic) treatments are different. Esthetic treatments reduce hair, basically making it less noticeable, while medical hair removal permanently eliminates hair. When it comes to VIO, as with any hair removal, medical hair removal is more effective at completely eliminating hair.
As you all know, the skin in the VIO area is quite delicate, which is why it's often called the "delicate zone." The hair there is naturally thick, so if you try to remove it yourself by plucking, the hair follicles—being large due to the thick hair—can let bacteria in, leading to folliculitis, which is like an enlarged pimple. Also, this area naturally has some pigmentation, meaning the skin tone is a bit darker than other areas.
Laser hair removal works by targeting dark pigment—since Japanese hair is black, the laser targets the black hair and destroys the hair follicle cells beneath it, preventing regrowth. Because the skin around this area is darker than other skin, you need to be extra careful with the laser power, as it's more prone to burns. And even if a burn does occur, this area tends to heal poorly due to friction from underwear. So please avoid plucking hair when doing self-care in the VIO area, and if you want VIO hair removal done, make sure it's performed at a proper medical facility with medical staff who can handle any burns that might occur.
Another common question is whether VIO hair removal causes any bodily problems. Since VIO is such an important area with thick, coarse hair, people often think removing it might not be good for the body. But actually, it's the opposite. Long ago, humans—like other animals—didn't wear clothes, so it's said that hair served a protective function for important areas like the delicate zone and the head. However, nowadays we wear underwear, so while the head goes uncovered and thus benefits from hair, the delicate zone is protected by the underwear that people wear every day. So whether or not there's hair there, it's still properly protected.
Also, something Japanese people might not realize because they only see other Japanese people—Japanese hair tends to be dark and quite thick. This means that underarm and pubic hair can be quite shocking to people from other countries, who often react with surprise at how dark and bushy it looks. So from an aesthetic standpoint, it might be better to keep it tidy. Medically speaking too, if you wear underwear with abundant hair, that area can become humid and sweaty. So thinning out the hair somewhat can help prevent itching and moisture buildup.
Another point: for women, during menstruation, blood can adhere to the hair, which can cause itching or skin irritation. This is slightly off topic, but many people switch to cloth pads for reasons like reducing simple discomfort or preventing the body from getting cold, though these reasons aren't entirely accurate. Cloth pads don't contain the polymer absorbent found in disposable pads, so the surface stays wet with menstrual blood. When skin—especially skin with hair—stays in contact with this moisture, it can become soggy, weakening the skin's barrier function and causing irritation. If hair traps blood against the skin, this is said to contribute to itching. So whether or not you've had VIO hair removal, if menstrual blood constantly stays on the skin, it can be an issue. If you're using cloth pads due to irritation from polymer materials, that's understandable, but the idea that they help you stay warm doesn't really hold up. Since hair can trap blood against the skin longer and cause more irritation, having less hair actually helps maintain your skin's barrier function.
For people who don't want to use pads, there are also period-proof underwear now—not menstrual shorts exactly, but underwear with polymer absorbent built in, from a brand I believe is called "Bear," that can absorb menstrual flow without needing a separate pad.
Getting back on track, considering menstruation, hair can trap blood and cause irritation, so having less hair in the VIO area is not a problem at all—quite the opposite.
Some people also worry that removing VIO hair might let bacteria into the body, but that's actually a misconception. Hair isn't what protects us from bacteria—it's the structure of the female genitalia itself that blocks bacteria effectively. The vaginal canal itself has a defense mechanism against bacterial invasion. So hair isn't blocking bacteria; the genital structure itself provides that protection. In fact, having a lot of hair can actually increase the risk of bacteria clinging to it. So by properly removing hair, you can keep the area cleaner and potentially reduce the risk of bacterial invasion—another reason VIO hair removal can be beneficial.
Also, this is something far in the future, but people often say you should get VIO hair removal to make caregiving easier later in life—this comes up a lot in TV shows and magazines. It's true that having no hair can make caregiving easier, but that's something far down the road. Right now, VIO hair removal doesn't put any strain on your body or cause any harm—in fact, it can help prevent irritation and itching. So if you've been wanting to try it but are worried about negative effects in the future, please feel free to get VIO hair removal done at a proper medical clinic.
Also, as time passes while you're still thinking about whether to do it, your hair—just like the hair on your head—can eventually turn gray, including in the pubic area. Since laser hair removal targets dark pigment, it can't treat gray or white hair. So just like facial hair or body hair, once it turns white, you won't be able to get it removed even if you want to. That's why it's a good idea to consider hair removal for areas you're concerned about sooner rather than later.
VIO hair removal might not be very common in Japan, but overseas, it's often considered a given—like, "you're not taking care of that?" kind of a norm. So I believe that in Japan too, this isn't necessarily an area that should just be left as is. If you're curious, please consider consulting a clinic about VIO hair removal.
