Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Don't you want to get rid of sagging cheeks, nasolabial folds, and an enlarged nose? To prevent these, bones are actually very important. Today, I'm going to talk thoroughly about what causes an enlarged nose, sagging cheeks, and prominent nasolabial folds—namely, the bones—and how we should approach caring for them. Please watch until the end. So, let's get right into it. Do you all remember the two videos I made back in 2020, "Things You Shouldn't Do for Sagging Prevention" and "Isn't Your Nose Getting Bigger?" Back then, I talked about how to prevent sagging—things like "don't rub your skin" and "don't get sunburned." I think that's become common knowledge by now, but what's finally starting to sink in for everyone recently is the bone phenomenon I also talked about at that time. Recently, many people have been talking about this "nose getting bigger" phenomenon everywhere—setting aside the fact that I was the one who originated this topic—but both the enlargement of the nose and the sagging of the face are related to the aging of the skull. As we age, signs of aging like sunken cheeks and sagging appear, and while UV exposure is definitely the biggest cause, along with excessive massage, the next major factor is actually the decrease in bone mass. Especially for women, bone density tends to decrease after menopause, so it makes sense that sagging starts to occur around the late 40s, right when menopause hits—that's likely a contributing factor. You've probably heard that height shrinks as people get older. That's because the bones in the spine become brittle and compress, leading to things like "I used to be 160cm tall, but now I'm 158cm." You might think of this happening with osteoporosis as people age, and while it's said that this is most pronounced after menopause, it's actually been found that facial bones become thinner even earlier than that. Decreases in lumbar spine bone density are commonly seen in people over 60, but the decline in facial bone density actually starts around the age of 40. According to research from Yale University, since skin and bone are made from the same protein, data shows that in people experiencing wrinkles and sagging, if there are changes in the skin, there are also changes in the bone, and if there are changes in bone density, changes in the skin also appear. This is quite scary, isn't it? For example, even if you maintain your skin properly through skincare, avoiding sunburn, and avoiding friction, if the bones underneath become thinner or shrink, the skin covering them will still sag. So while it's important to keep your skin healthy, the bones that form the foundation are extremely important too. As I mentioned earlier, after menopause, women experience a decrease in the female hormone estrogen. Bones go through a constant cycle of being broken down and rebuilt, but estrogen suppresses the process of bone breakdown. When estrogen decreases, the process shifts toward more bone breakdown. Facial bone loss begins around age 40, but for Japanese women in particular, menopause is said to occur around age 50. The five years before and after menopause are called the "climacteric period," and if you don't address the gradual decline in estrogen during this time, you might find your nose getting bigger or sagging becoming more noticeable, even if you're working hard on your skincare. This is why bone care becomes so important. Bone care involves three major factors: diet, exercise, and lifestyle habits. Let's start with diet. When it comes to strengthening bones, of course calcium comes to mind first. You were probably told as a child, "Drink milk to strengthen your bones, so get your calcium." Of course, calcium is an essential mineral for increasing bone density. However, taking calcium alone actually doesn't do much good. Another important nutrient alongside calcium is vitamin D. Taking vitamin D together with calcium improves calcium absorption. So it's very important to take calcium and vitamin D together. If milk contains about 120mg of calcium per serving, a block of firm tofu contains about 160mg. Dried baby sardines (shirasu) also contain calcium. When it comes to getting calcium, I think fish, small fish, and tofu are probably good choices. As for vitamin D, it's actually quite difficult to get enough through diet alone. Eating wood ear mushrooms or eel every day isn't very practical. Also, vitamin D is a vitamin that's produced when your skin is exposed to sunlight. But here's the thing—one of the major causes of sagging is photoaging. So I don't think it's necessary to get sun exposure on your face just to produce vitamin D. The amount of vitamin D you need daily varies depending on where you live and the season, but it can be produced even just through exposure on your palms. So, it's important to properly apply sunscreen to your face, but expose areas like your legs or hands to sunlight for about 15 to 20 minutes a day. If you don't want to do even that, I think it's better to take a supplement as well. Especially in winter, when daylight hours are shorter and you spend less time outdoors, taking a supplement might be a good idea. Another necessary vitamin is vitamin K. In addition to vitamin D improving calcium absorption, vitamin K works to help calcium deposit into bones and strengthen them. The most well-known source of vitamin K is natto. Eating natto actually helps strengthen your bones. Vitamin K is also found in spinach, komatsuna, garland chrysanthemum (shungiku), and daikon leaves, so eating traditional Japanese dishes that use these ingredients is also very important for preventing bone aging. Also, it's important to apply pressure to your bones. Walking is said to be important for this. When your heel strikes the ground, it stimulates the bone and promotes bone formation. Walking is great for forming leg bones, so I think pressing on your face might be a way of showing it love. By the way, pressing is known to stimulate fibroblasts as well, so I think it's necessary for collagen production. So rather than rubbing vigorously, I recommend being mindful to press gently instead. Now let's talk about things you should avoid. Caffeine and alcohol are things that worsen calcium absorption. In small amounts, caffeine can actually have an activating effect, but consuming too much can interfere with calcium absorption. The same goes for alcohol. Small amounts are fine, but if you want to prevent your bones from becoming brittle and suppress the resulting signs of facial aging, you should try to avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol as much as possible. So, how was that? Strengthening your bones doesn't just make you healthier—it also helps prevent sagging, nasolabial folds, and nose enlargement. Since bone loss begins around age 40, it's important to start taking care of your bones before that age. Once you hit menopause, bone loss accelerates, so it's crucial to build up your "bone savings" from a young age. And if you're already in your 40s, you need to start taking proper care now. Don't just think about your skin—think carefully about the bones underneath as well, and I hope this helps you prevent sagging.
