Hello everyone, I'm Dr. Tomori Nitta, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today, I'd like to talk about foods I recommend for anyone who has been feeling a little down lately. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult to go out or gather with others, creating widespread uncertainty in many aspects of life. As a result, many people are struggling to lift their mood. On top of that, winter is naturally a season when people tend to feel more depressed compared to summer, making it easier for depressive symptoms to emerge. When you add the anxiety of a so-called "third wave" of COVID-19, it's no wonder people feel increasingly unsettled. In this video, I'd like to introduce some foods that may help alleviate these depressive symptoms, so please watch until the end. Mood disorders are often attributed, in part, to a decline in certain neurotransmitters and hormones in the brain. The most well-known of these is serotonin, sometimes called the "happy hormone" or "feel-good hormone." Having sufficient serotonin in the brain helps prevent mood from dropping. The reason I mentioned that mood tends to decline in winter is that serotonin secretion is significantly influenced by the amount of sunlight we receive. More light means more serotonin; less light means less serotonin. There is an interesting study related to this. In the early 2000s, researchers at the University of Melbourne measured blood serotonin levels in 101 healthy volunteers by drawing blood from the jugular vein — quite an intensive method — to study how the brain regulates serotonin across seasons. The results showed that even in people with no history of depression, serotonin levels dropped in winter and rose again in summer. The study also found that on cloudy mornings, serotonin secretion remained lower throughout the entire day. Winter has shorter days and cloudy mornings mean less morning light, both of which reduce serotonin production and increase the risk of depressive symptoms. It is widely recommended to open your curtains first thing in the morning and expose yourself to natural light to stimulate serotonin release and improve your mood. This is something I strongly encourage everyone to do. Now, let's get to the main topic of today's video: the surprising food that can boost serotonin levels. You may have heard that eating bananas can support serotonin production, but today I want to introduce research focused on a specific nutrient. This study was conducted at the Free Radical Research Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand. Researchers investigated which nutrients are necessary for producing mood-enhancing hormones such as serotonin, adrenaline, and oxytocin. They found that vitamin C — well known for its benefits to the skin — plays a major role. While vitamin C is known in skincare for inhibiting melanin production and boosting collagen and elastin synthesis, it was already understood that having sufficient vitamin C in the body promotes the production of serotonin and oxytocin, both of which enhance feelings of happiness. This study went further to ask: does the way you consume vitamin C affect how much it improves your mood? The researchers compared three groups: one group took vitamin C supplements, a second group ate kiwifruit containing an equivalent amount of vitamin C, and a third group received neither. They then measured changes in each group's sense of wellbeing. Both the supplement group and the kiwifruit group saw their blood vitamin C levels rise to adequate levels within about two weeks, while the placebo group showed no increase — as expected. The striking finding was that despite consuming the same amount of vitamin C, the kiwifruit group reported significantly greater improvements in happiness and wellbeing compared to the supplement group. This is a fascinating result. Vitamin C can be obtained from both supplements and food, but kiwifruit contains far more than just vitamin C — it also provides a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. Dietary fiber in particular supports gut health, and the gut is increasingly recognized as being involved in the production of serotonin and other happiness-related hormones. This suggests that rather than focusing on a single nutrient, obtaining a comprehensive array of nutrients through whole foods is what truly enhances wellbeing. For anyone prone to low mood, I recommend starting your morning by exposing yourself to natural light, then eating two kiwifruit. This combination can raise your blood vitamin C levels and support the production of serotonin and oxytocin — your body's natural happiness hormones. The most important lesson from this research is: don't fixate on individual nutrients. When we hear that vitamin C, vitamin D, or vitamin B is good for a particular condition, it's tempting to reach straight for a supplement. Supplements certainly have their place — if you can't eat kiwifruit every day or can't get enough from food alone, using supplements as a complement to your diet is perfectly reasonable. However, for the most efficient absorption and utilization of nutrients, whole foods are the better choice. During a season when going outside is difficult and the skies tend to be overcast, if you're feeling down, please try incorporating kiwifruit into your diet. And for any nutrient — not just vitamin C — I encourage you to make food your first choice and turn to supplements only when your dietary intake falls short. I hope you found this helpful.
