Hello everyone, this is Tomori Ara. Today I want to give a piece of advice to people who love skincare or have skin concerns. People who love skincare or have skin concerns tend to try too hard with their skincare routines. But in reality, skincare that you think is good for your skin can actually become a burden on your skin—this is very common. So today, I want to talk about "subtraction skincare," which is especially important for people who love skincare and are working hard at various routines. If you're thinking "Wait, I'm working so hard on my skincare but my skin condition seems off" or "Maybe I'm overdoing it," please watch until the end. Let's start with a review of why overdoing it is bad for you. Our skin is largely divided into the epidermis and the dermis, and the outermost layer, the stratum corneum, is about as thin as a single sheet of plastic wrap—you've probably heard this before, and it really is that thin. When you keep adding things to this thin layer—like excessive massaging, washing, friction, too much oil, or layering various products—it causes invisible inflammation on the skin's surface. When this inflammation accumulates over time, it becomes the cause of spots, wrinkles, and sagging. So the harder you try, the more you might actually be destroying your own skin barrier. Even though you're trying to suppress skin inflammation by doing all sorts of things, you might actually be accelerating it. However, this doesn't mean you should reduce your skincare to zero. It's important to properly identify the points where you should subtract, while adding where necessary, and thoroughly practicing subtraction. The first subtraction point is cleansing and makeup removal. This doesn't mean you shouldn't wash your face or don't need to remove your makeup. Sometimes I get comments like "I'm not wearing makeup, so do I need cleansing oil?" Basically, if you haven't applied anything, I don't think cleansing oil is necessary—just washing to remove dirt is enough. In the past, I used to say that if you're only wearing sunscreen, just washing your face is fine. But some recent sunscreens form a very strong, resistant film, so if the sunscreen you're using is formulated to be hard to remove, I think you should use cleansing oil. But if there's no indication that it's hard to remove, just washing your face should be fine. However, when doing this, please avoid circular rubbing motions. Rubbing too much in circles trying to thoroughly remove sunscreen or makeup becomes a cause of friction. Also, the more you massage in cleansing oil, the more easily the cleansing agents can penetrate the skin. So the key point with makeup is to remove it quickly. Never do anything like massaging with cleansing oil. As for friction, areas like the tip of the nose, chin, and T-zone have relatively more sebum, so it's fine to rub those areas somewhat. But areas like around the eyes or the cheekbones that concern you should be treated more gently—just lightly applying product rather than rubbing for a long time. The guideline is to keep it under 1 minute. I personally think cleansing oils and similar products that minimize friction are good choices. Next is subtraction in moisturizing. I think many of you believe that applying a lot of product prevents dryness. But that's a big misconception. Isn't it obvious that there's a limit to how much moisture you can put into something as thin as a single sheet of plastic wrap? So even if you use a sheet mask and apply toner and do all sorts of things, the product that has the most effect on your skin is the first one you apply. Conversely, the more products you layer on top of each other, the harder it becomes for subsequent ingredients to penetrate. That's why the first product you apply penetrates the skin most easily. Anything layered after that is essentially wasted, and can even cause your skin to become oversaturated. So please understand that there's a fixed capacity for moisture. Second point: patting. Many people think that patting—like tapping repeatedvery quickly—helps products penetrate the skin, so they end up patting unnecessarily hard. Of course, gently applying with your hands is fine, but excessive patting or massaging motions, honestly, I don't think have much meaning. As for wanting to use cotton pads, I think that's totally fine. But even with cotton, there's a technique of patting quickly, like tap-tap-tap, thinking this helps the product penetrate better—but this also doesn't have any real effect. The main benefit of using cotton is that, unlike applying with your hands which can create uneven application, cotton allows for even, thorough application without unevenness. But the rapid patting motion itself doesn't help with penetration into the skin, and can actually cause unnecessary inflammation. So please understand that patting doesn't really have much meaning, and you can subtract this from your routine too. Another point—this is quite common among Japanese people—is over-moisturizing with too much emulsion and cream. Applying toner, then serum, then emulsion, then cream is considered a standard skincare routine, and because Japanese people tend to be diligent, they think they need to use everything. Of course, if you use everything and your skin condition is good, that's fine. But personally, I think you only need either emulsion or cream, not both. The major textural difference between emulsion and cream is that cream contains more oil, while emulsion has roughly a 50-50 balance of water and oil—though this varies by manufacturer. For example, if you feel your skin is very dry, use cream; if not, use emulsion. Ultimately, if your skin condition is good with just serum, you don't need to apply emulsion or cream at all. Conversely, if you're using a high-performance emulsion or cream, it's totally fine to finish with just toner and emulsion, or just toner and cream. Rather than thinking you need to use everything, figure out which products you can omit while maintaining good skin condition. As long as your skin gets moisture, nutrients, and a layer of oil to seal it in, that's what matters. For people with excess sebum, your own sebum acts as a natural cream, so if you're producing enough oil naturally without layering cream or emulsion, using just serum is fine. Personally, when I feel like I have excess sebum, I sometimes finish with just emulsion. You absolutely don't need to follow every single step in the routine. So please find the balance that works for you. The next thing to subtract is special care. Many of you might think you need to do special care, like intensive treatments—massages, sheet masks, peeling, and so on. Of course, if you have dullness, peeling might be good, and if you feel like you lack moisture, a sheet mask might be good too. But the question is: has your special care become a daily routine? "Special" is meant to be special, so it should be done based on what your skin actually needs at that moment. Many people feel they need to do care every single day, and this often ends up becoming a burden. Of course, if your skin condition is good with that, that's fine. But if your skin condition is poor despite continuously doing special care, please keep in mind that the special care you're doing might actually be burdening your skin. So when you feel your skin condition is off, it's very important to temporarily return to simple care. When your skin feels unstable, you might think you need to use a sheet mask, or apply a rich cream. But please remember the importance of resetting once in a while. Up until now, I've only talked about subtraction, but there are things you absolutely should never subtract. That is, of course, sunscreen. UV protection truly is the ultimate anti-aging care. If you skip this, everything else becomes meaningless, so please make sure to apply it properly. Of course, apply it every day the sun is out, 365 days a year, and reapply extra in areas prone to dryness or spots. Another thing you shouldn't skip is inner care. Among inner care practices, one thing I absolutely want you to do is "bone care." I mentioned five or six years ago on YouTube that facial bones becoming smaller causes sagging—basically, both the enlargement of the nose and facial sagging are related to facial bone atrophy, meaning the thinning of bones. I believe this idea has become somewhat widespread by now. This is closely related to female hormones. For the menopausal generation, if we consider menopause as the average, it typically occurs within five years before or after. Rather than a sudden drop, hormone levels gradually decline over time. So particularly if you did unhealthy dieting when you were young, or didn't eat properly, you become more prone to bone atrophy as you get into your later years. So it's important not to do excessive dieting. For bone development, not just calcium but vitamin D is also important. Vitamin D is produced when exposed to UV rays, so it's said that excessive sun protection inhibits vitamin D production. However, since UV exposure causes photoaging, and it's difficult to get enough vitamin D from food alone, I think you should take it as a supplement. Also, taking supplements like protein or isoflavones, which resemble female hormones, is important. Additionally, bones need pressure/load-bearing exercise, so things like a 30-minute walk per day or squats are also very important for bone health. To summarize: for things you're overdoing with skincare, ease up a bit. Special care shouldn't be done daily, and even if you layer products, our skin is only about 0.2mm thick, so products can't penetrate that deep—remember that the first product you apply penetrates the most easily. However, things you should never skip are UV protection and countermeasures against bone atrophy. If you properly maintain these, I believe your skin can be kept beautiful to a good degree. So, what did you think? I really hope this video reaches those of you who tend to overdo things, so that you can identify "Oh, maybe I was overdoing this" and subtract accordingly. Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
