Hello everyone, this is Dr. Tori. I think this is the time of year when people eat the most chocolate. Eating chocolate makes you feel so happy, doesn't it? According to a certain source, apparently mentioned in Getters' book, lucky people eat chocolate. There's no medical basis for this, but chocolate can bring good luck and improve your mood. But for those of you thinking, "Even if it brings good luck and lifts my mood, it's probably bad for my skin, so I've given up on chocolate" — actually, chocolate contains whitening components. So today I want to talk about how eating chocolate might not only bring good luck and improve your mood, but also give you beautiful, brighter skin. Please watch until the end. For the topic of chocolate and luck, please check out Getters' books or YouTube videos. Today, I'll focus on skin whitening and beauty benefits. Actually, chocolate is an excellent food. Its raw material, cacao beans, contains an antioxidant called cacao polyphenol in abundance. Research shows that a group who consumed foods rich in cacao polyphenol for 12 weeks had reduced redness caused by inflammation from UV exposure. There's also data showing that cacao polyphenol improves blood circulation in the skin. Reduced redness essentially means reduced inflammation, so cacao polyphenol may protect skin from UV damage and improve skin turnover by boosting circulation. Another point is that cacao polyphenol also contains dietary fiber. I always talk about the importance of eating fermentable dietary fiber (called luminacoid) that feeds gut bacteria, and cacao polyphenol is actually a type of luminacoid. Balancing gut bacteria improves constipation, which in turn increases skin moisture levels — so it may also help prevent dry skin. Also, as the name "polyphenol" suggests, it has very strong antioxidant properties. Skin can become dull due to oxidation from UV rays or excess sebum, and this oxidation-related inflammation can penetrate deeper into the skin and cause spots. Even if you're doing UV care and other measures, oxidation inevitably occurs to some extent, so taking in antioxidants like polyphenols is very beneficial for beautiful skin. Some of you might be avoiding chocolate because you've heard it causes acne. This is actually a controversial topic. According to some U.S. data, eating chocolate doesn't necessarily cause acne, while other data suggests it does. Researchers believe this discrepancy may depend on the amount of cacao polyphenol and sugar content in the chocolate. If a chocolate has low cacao polyphenol content and high sugar content, breaking down that sugar requires vitamin B group nutrients. Vitamin B is also responsible for controlling excess sebum production. So if vitamin B is depleted from processing sugar, sebum production can become excessive. In other words, it's not necessarily chocolate itself that's the problem, but rather excessive sugar intake that depletes vitamin B and leads to increased sebum production, potentially causing acne. Since cacao polyphenol itself is good for the skin, it's suggested that choosing chocolate with less sugar could be beneficial. So what kind of chocolate should you choose for beautiful skin? Look for chocolate labeled as "high cacao" — ideally 70% cacao or higher, with as little sugar as possible. Another important point is what's mixed into the chocolate. I recommend nuts, especially almonds. Almonds contain unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. Unsaturated fatty acids help give skin a glowing texture, and vitamin E also has strong antioxidant properties. Eating one or two pieces a day of high-cacao chocolate (70% or above) with less sugar and containing nuts or almonds may help you enjoy the skin-beautifying and whitening effects of cacao polyphenol. And perhaps, it might even bring you good luck too. Chocolate often carries a negative image and feelings of guilt, and I understand that 70% cacao chocolate can be hard to eat for some people. However, there are now many delicious high-cacao chocolates available, so I encourage you to find one you like and aim for both beautiful skin and good luck. For those of you who really want to confess your feelings to someone but let your pride get in the way — thinking "I'm too proud, I'm such a chicken" — why not try giving high-cacao chocolate as a gift, saying something like "I heard this is healthy, want to try it?" It might just be the start of something new, so I hope this becomes an opportunity for you this year. Of course, that doesn't mean sweet chocolate is bad. If you're going to eat one piece of sweet chocolate, you could choose high-cacao instead. Since high-cacao chocolate can be an acquired taste at first, try gradually increasing the percentage — starting from 30%, then 50%, then 70%. You can also try combining high-cacao chocolate with dried fruits like raisins. Dried fruits have some natural sweetness but also provide dietary fiber and minerals, so with a bit of creativity, you can enjoy high-cacao chocolate more easily. If you enjoyed today's video, please give it a thumbs up. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
